(KGTV) -- The California Assembly has voted to ban the manufacture and sale of new fur products.Animal welfare groups have rallied around the bill, arguing the fur industry is inhumane and pointing to alternatives like faux fur.But opponents of the bill have countered that the proposed law would devastate fur retailers and manufacturers.Some California cities, including Los Angeles, San Francisco and Berkeley, have already passed ordinances banning the sale of fur.The New York City council has also considered banning fur sales in America's biggest city.The bill would not include used fur products or furs used for traditional purposes. SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — A Utah family that ordered free coronavirus masks through a state program say they were sent politically-charged face coverings featuring a handgun and a controversial slogan.Christine Passey-Spencer of Rose Park says she ordered the masks through a sate program, "A Mask for Every Utahn." Since April, the campaign has used federal COVID-19 money to purchase more than 2 million masks from local and international manufacturers to limit the spread of the virus."I was just shocked," Passey-Spencer said.The two masks feature an American flag with a handgun printed across the front. The face coverings also feature the slogan "Don't Tread on Me," written below a coiled rattlesnake."I think the thing that bothered me most is that I knew my tax dollars paid for this, and this is very politically-charged speech," Passey-Spencer said.The Gadsden Flag — the inspiration for the snake and "Don't Tread on Me" slogan — was first used in the Revolutionary War. But in recent years, the image has been co-opted by the Tea Party, anti-gun control activists and white supremacists. In 2016, it was deemed to have "racially-tinged" messaging in some contexts by the federal government. More recently, the image has been used by people believing COVID-19 health restrictions take away their constitutional rights."We hope this is an isolated incident; that we just missed these couple of masks," said Ben Hart, who oversees Utah's mask program for the Governor's Office of Economic Development.Hart admits about 100 of the "Don't Tread on Me" masks were included in a shipment last month. Hart says the staff deemed them "inappropriate" and attempted to set all of them aside."We will not be using taxpayer dollars to pay for these masks. The ruling Monday has dealt a setback to one of the Trump administration’s efforts to rein in asylum. The government argued that designated CBP employees are trained comparably to asylum officers at U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, another agency within the Homeland Security Department. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A former investigator with the Department of Homeland Security was sentenced today to more than a decade in federal prison for taking drug money seized during his work as a federal agent, then laundering the funds that he used for personal expenses.Tyrone Cedric Duren, 50, who pleaded guilty to nearly 20 federal counts last year, was sentenced to 130 months in custody, plus three years of supervised release.U.S. District Judge John Houston also ordered the forfeiture of Duren's Bonsall home, a 5,000 money judgment and restitution to the Internal Revenue Service, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.Duren was assigned to a bulk cash smuggling task force and, as part of his work, would investigate suspected drug traffickers transporting cash.After seizing money during those investigations, he would deliberately fail to report the cash and used the money for his and his families' own personal expenditures, including real estate and international travel, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.Over the course of several years, Duren also placed GPS trackers on vehicles used to move drug proceeds, prosecutors said.Prosecutors cited an example from 2014, in which Duren tracked a vehicle heading toward Mexico, which was stopped at a Border Patrol checkpoint.After Duren seized cash found hidden in laundry detergent boxes in the vehicle, he took more than 0,000 for himself, which was later deposited into business and personal accounts to conceal those thefts,'' the U.S. Attorney's Office said.In addition, prosecutors say he didn't file taxes in 2013 to hide stolen funds and lied ``numerous times'' to investigating agents. 1675

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A hit-and-run driver struck a motorcyclist early Wednesday morning in the Fairmont Village neighborhood, leaving the rider with a broken leg, police said.The crash was reported around 12:10 a.m. at the intersection of Lantana Drive and Euclid Avenue, San Diego police Officer John Buttle said.A 33-year-old man was riding a Yamaha motorcycle northbound on Euclid Avenue when a vehicle pulled out from Lantana Drive and struck the right side of the motorcycle, Buttle said.The rider was taken to a hospital for treatment of a fractured tibia and fibula, the officer said.The suspect vehicle, described as a white Honda sedan, was last seen heading southbound on Euclid Avenue, Buttle said.A description of the hit-and-run driver was not immediately available. 784
