SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Trying to plan for life’s most joyful experiences has become another source of stress during the pandemic. With large weddings still on hold, couples remain in limbo.“These are people who’ve planned their weddings, spent a year, maybe two years, planning their wedding. And it’s just starting to crumble beneath them a little bit. Everything is being just ripped away, all these things they had planned," said Sara Whittaker, owner of Desert Born Studios in San Diego. And when weddings came to a halt, so did Whittaker's livelihood. “I looked at a lot of my other friends who are vendors in this industry and watched their years kind of plummet. And everyone struggling financially and still wanting to work,” said Whittaker. Knowing vendors were in need of work, and couples eager to get married, Whittaker set out to create a COVID-friendly wedding experience.“As a small business owner you really have to adapt or die," she said. "If you can’t figure out a way to roll with the punches that the world gives you, you’re not going to make it.”Teaming up with industry vendors, she crafted an all-inclusive wedding elopement experience. The ,500 package includes florals, hair and makeup, photos, video, and a wedding officiant. Couples can invite up to 15 people to the elopement ceremony in Joshua Tree National Park.Bree Steffen, owner of Pause Creative Collective, built and designed a desert-themed ceremony backdrop. "It was just really cool to be a part of something this intimate and special while still being safe. It was awesome to capture these couples being so strong and committed to each other and finding a safe way to celebrate their love, even during a pandemic!" said Steffen, who is also the event videographer. After months of wedding planning stress and anxiety, Izzy Van Vleet opted for the desert elopement soon after hearing about it. “We had a big warehouse venue picked out, with 200 guests. It was going to be a big celebration. I had a lot of the planning done and it didn't look like those plans were going to work out." said Van Vleet.She liked the idea of an intimate wedding with her closest friends and family. “Now, we get to spend time with the people that are most important, that we would’ve wanted to spend time with anyway and just really celebrate our love and getting married," said Van Vleet. “It’s not so much about who’s got the biggest floral budget or the most expensive dress. It’s about marrying the person you love, and having those people that you love the very most being able to witness it as well," said Whittaker. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Hospitalizations related to COVID-19 continue to increase across San Diego County.The county’s latest numbers show 458 patients hospitalized, while 178 are in the Intensive Care Unit.“It is not quite what we’re seeing in Florida and Houston, but we are seeing an increase for sure,” said Dr. Julie Phillips, the medical director of Sharp Grossmont’s Emergency Department.“Almost every ER in the county has their tents set up, and they never took them down despite us not needing to utilize it for a number of weeks, if not even about six weeks, then starting last week it is back in use,” said Phillips.Currently, Sharp Grossmont has 27 hospitalized COVID-19 patients, while Sharp Chula Vista has 44, and Sharp Memorial has 29.Phillips said most local hospitals are well equipped to handle the surge.“All of us have staffed up beds by 150 percent awaiting for this,” she explained. “We know a lot more; we feel better about knowing how it’s transmitted, we feel better about our PPE, especially our N95 masks. Flattening the curve gave us time to get what we needed ready to go, so now we’re ready.”On Friday, Scripps Health reached a single-day all-time high number of hospitalized COVID-19 patients.At its five locations, a total of 126 people were hospitalized. Earlier that week, the number was still in the 90s.Both Scripps Mercy in San Diego and Chula Vista had 38 patients hospitalized at each facility.The numbers were the highest for a single day since the pandemic began.Infectious disease specialist for UCSD Health, Dr. David Pride, tells 10News UCSD’s hospital system is also seeing an increase.“Going back to early June, we admit between 1 and 6 new patients per day. The rolling average is a bit higher the last couple of weeks,” said Pride via email. “We are operating near our capacity, but largely because we accept outside hospital transfers readily who need a higher level of care than their hospitals can provide. Sacramento County jail records show Juan Tang was detained early Friday. The Justice Department on Thursday announced charges against Tang and three other scientists in the U.S., saying they lied about their status as members of China's People's Liberation Army. (KGTV) - A wall at the intersection of Ocean View and 30th in the Logan Heights neighborhood of San Diego has been turned from a place with frequent unwanted graffiti, to a work of art that embraces the community.David Mena said he and about seven artists have been painting the wall for about a month and it’s finally completed. It’s a celebration of the different types of people who live in the area, plus a look at the different cultures and ethnicities. From a depiction of the “tortilla lady” to the mascots from local schools, the art captures the spirit of a wide variety of types of people and brings a message of unity.“This is our peaceful protest and letting the community and everyone in San Diego county know that in these destructive times, we can build and we can move forward as a unit,” said Meno.He said he recruited youth in the area to help with the art as a way to inspire them and show them a positive influence.Mena said close to ,000 was donated by the community to help pay for supplies and food during the project.
