SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — FBI investigators are looking for an armed suspect who stormed into a Mira Mesa bank Wednesday and ransacked the bank's vault. The man stormed into the Cal Coast Credit Union located at 9825 Mira Mesa Blvd. just before 10 a.m. Wednesday. The man, who was wearing a mask and hood, jumped on a counter and made verbal demands to the bank's tellers. The man displayed a handgun, ordered several employees to the ground, and demanded access to the bank's vault, investigators say. While inside the vault, the man empties a recycling bin and used it to collect cash from the vault. He then fled in a white Chevy Z71 pickup truck that investigators say he backed up to the bank's entrance before entering. The man is described as possibly African American, 5' 5" tall, weighing 150 pounds with muscular build, and was last seen wearing a black ski mask, navy blue hooded sweatshirt, dark pants, black gloves, and a black mask.Anyone with information is asked to call San Diego FBI at 858-320-1800 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. 1048

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Due to struggling ridership, the City of San Diego has been busy creating a plan to revamp its bikesharing program. On Wednesday staff will provide an update on improvements made and future plans, in response to a grand jury report in 2016.The program, DecoBike, is privately owned but works in partnership with the city.Critics of the program say it has not met the city's needs due to where stations were built.Last year a county grand jury report titled "San Diego's Bikesharing Program Needs Help," outlined ways the city and DecoBike could improve to better serve the community. One recommendation was to put more stations in beach communities, even though local business owners and residents protested them being there.Since then, the city has done the opposite, removing 14 stations from beach communities.City spokesperson Katie Keach says the city and DecoBike are concentrating on increasing the number of stations in the urban core.By doing this, they believe it will provide for a comprehensive system to increase alternative transportation options. They say it will also help the city meet its Climate Action Plan goals.Keach says they hope to have additional stations in North Park, Uptown, Golden Hill and downtown this winter. The city is conducting presentations to community planning groups this fall, seeking public input.Bicycle and climate activists want the program to succeed, saying it's critical to the city's Climate Action Plan.  1486

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Five dogs died during a fire at a former kennel in Lakeside early Sunday morning. The fire broke out on the 8700 block of Winter Gardens Boulevard around 3 a.m., according to the Lakeside Fire Protection District. The house used to be a functioning kennel, but the woman who lives in the home was either pet sitting or storing the animal for residents at the time of the fire, the district says. RELATED: Mother, father killed in Logan Heights house fireA total of eight dogs were inside the home when the blaze sparked. Five of the dogs and a parrot died in the blaze. Crews say the fire started downstairs in the two-story home. The department says the age of the home made it difficult to fight the blaze. “Old structures are lath and plaster, they’re difficult to fight fires because the fires are get deep in the walls. So it takes a long time to put those out. There is a lot of stuff inside of the home as well. So moving hoselines inside of the house is very difficult as well,” according to Bernard Molloy with Lakeside Fire. RELATED: Family escapes as fire destroys Lakeside homeThe surviving animals were found upstairs and are expected to be okay. At this time, it’s unclear what caused the fire. 1237

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Hundreds of thousands of San Diego County workers are facing the prospect of fewer hours, lower paychecks, and even job loss. The workers are in the retail, leisure, and hospitality fields, which in all employs more than 350,000 workers in the region. The squeeze comes as restrictions increase related to the coronavirus, including a 30-day travel ban from Europe, a county ban on events of 250 or more people, and cancellations of major conventions. RELATED: San Diego County announces five new coronavirus cases, bans large gatherings"There's not going to be customers, sales are going to go very low, and I'm concerned just how long is this going to last?" said Sara Long, a server at downtown's Cold Beers and Cheeseburgers. Long said hours have been as fewer customers come in. She noted that a convention happening at the convention center that was supposed to attract 8,000 people only saw a fraction of those attendees. John McKlosky was one of those attendees, lamenting the shell of the Fiber Optic conference he attends annually. RELATED: What's been canceled, postponed in San Diego, nationally due to coronavirus"I walked in and was practically the only person standing on the carpet," McKlosky said. "I've talked to restaurant owners, hotel owners, even the Uber drivers that are running me around. They're devastated."Already, five conventions through May have postponed or canceled, meaning 43,000 potential customers won't be coming downtown. The quick drop off of overnight guests is impacting more than just hotels in downtown, but also lodging in surrounding areas that get a spill over. RELATED: Disneyland, California Adventure to close through March due to coronavirusElvin Lai, who owns the Ocean Park Inn in Pacific Beach, said he is normally at 100 percent capacity at this time of year but is now around 20 percent. He also hasn't filled 10 positions he normally would. Lai reacted with shock at President Trump's announcement of the 30-day ban of travel from Europe. "My head exploded," said Lai, also the president of the San Diego County Lodging Association. "I can't speak for them but the San Diego airport is seeing major drops in travel coming to town. That doesn't help."RELATED: San Diego casinos not gambling with coronavirus safetyAndy Hall, an executive at the San Diego Workforce Partnership, said the agency is cross-training workers as they expect more layoff notices to come in. 2449
