SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Airbnb says it has cracked down on 17 listings in San Diego County that have received complaints or have violated policies surrounding parties. The rental booking company says the listings have either been suspended or removed from its platform following Airbnb's ban on parities and events at listings until further notice. The listings disciplined were located in the San Diego, Escondido, La Mesa, Clairemont Mesa, Linda Vista, Mission Bay Park, North Park, Pacific Beach, Peninsula, Southeastern San Diego, and Uptown.RELATED: San Diego shuts down Bankers Hill Airbnb ‘party house’ over COVID-19 concerns, other violations"In this current environment, it’s more important than ever before to prevent large parties and gatherings, and we support the efforts of local officials to put a stop to this irresponsible behavior," said John Choi, Airbnb’s Director of Public Policy in San Diego. "We hope that sharing out these steps today can raise further awareness of our 24/7 neighbor hotline so that we can strengthen the enforcement of our ban on party houses throughout San Diego County."The crackdown comes as Airbnb moves to address house parties at its listings during the pandemic. Earlier this month, a guest held an unauthorized party at a home in Sacramento County, ending with three people being shot and injured at the party. The house-sharing company has also made it more challenging for some guests under the age of 25 from booking rentals in their region unless they have a number of positive reviews. Last year, Airbnb also announced an expansion of manually screening high-risk reservations flagged by their automated systems.RELATED: San Diego residents, hosts back Airbnb ban on partiesParties have been a longstanding issue for San Diego hosts and neighbors in the past. Many told ABC 10News recently that they back the recent ban on parties. In San Diego, the city has failed to implement any new regulations on vacation rentals. The City Council passed an ordinance instituting rules in 2018 but rescinded it after a referendum funded by Airbnb. 2093

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- An Australian national and his Long Beach business partner are accused of siphoning more than million from the State of California in a years-long charter school scheme. According to the San Diego District Attorney, the pair sought out small school districts with limited experience in oversight and proposed they start online charter schools to earn more public funds. Sean McManus, 46, and Jason Schrock, 44, the CEO and president of A3 Education, along with nine other people named in the case have been indicted in San Diego County. Criminal counts include conspiracy, misappropriation of public funds, paying for student information and conflict of interest.A year-long investigation uncovered a massive scheme in which McManus and Schrock told subordinates and co-defendants to open a total of 19 charter schools in both San Diego County and statewide, according to the DA. The charter schools are listed below: Valiant Academy San DiegoValiant Academy Los AngelesValiant Academy Santa BarbaraCA STEAM San BernardinoCA STEAM SonomaCA STEAM Sonoma IICA STEAM Santa BarbaraUplift California MontereyUplift California NorthUplift California SouthUplift California Santa BarbaraCalifornia Academy of Sports ScienceCalifornia Academy of Sports Science FresnoCalifornia Vanguard FresnoUniversity PrepUniversity Prep FresnoUniversity Prep San BernardinoCalifornia Prep Sutter K-7California Prep Sutter 8-12 “These defendants engaged in a devious, systematic public corruption scheme on the backs of students, their parents and the public that over time diverted millions of taxpayer dollars into their own pockets,” District Attorney Summer Stephan said. “Our team of investigators and prosecutors uncovered widespread misappropriation of public funds that extends across the state.”Co-defendants in the case who worked under McManus and Schrock at the charter schools reportedly failed to disclose their relationship with the men when starting the schools, claiming to be the schools’ leaders. McManus is charged with 64 counts and is facing more than 40 years in prison if convicted. Schrock is charged with 62 counts and also faces more than 40 years in prison, Stephan said. On top of creating the charter schools, both McManus and Schrock are accused of running another scam that paid athletic organizations for student information. The pair reportedly paid pre-existing youth programs as little as per student for enrollment documentation and would then enroll the students into a charter school during the summer, collecting roughly ,000 per student from the state. McManus and Schrock are then accused of transferring more than million in public charter school funds into companies the pair own or control. Instead of spending the money on education, once the money was in private bank accounts, both men are accused of using the funds for themselves and their families. According to authorities, McManus and Schrock used the money to invest in startup companies, real estate, and wired money directly to themselves or family members. Most of the money obtained from the state ended up in the pockets of McManus and Schrock, the District Attorney's office said. San Diego's District Attorney held a news conference Wednesday morning. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Amid fears of post-election unrest, parishioners at San Diego's oldest church are meeting the possibility of violence with prayer. It's the morning of the election and Peggy Stolberg is hoping to cast a vote for peace — through prayer."It always seems like prayers are the answers to many things," said Stolberg.Stolberg spent part of her morning in the sanctuary of the Mission San Diego de Alcala, her church for the last 35 years."I pray for the unity of our country. I'm also here to pray for non-violent situations after the results come out," said Stolberg.Peggy is one of many — a few at a time — expected to show up by the end of the day, says Father Bill Springer."A little bit of anxiety," said Father Springer.Father Springer believes this was the first-ever all-day prayer vigil for election peace in the history of the 251-year-old mission."We just felt there was a threat of violence around the election, because of the divisiveness of our society and previous violence in the streets," said Father Springer.Father Springer says to combat that, he's calling upon the power of prayer."Aside from the efficacy of the prayer itself, it also alerts people and puts on their mind that this is something people should be concerned about ... and spread to their neighbors and others that they should have a spirit of peacefulness and spirit of respect for others," said Father Springer. 1419

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego prison worker has tested positive for coronavirus, as California prepares to release 3,500 non-violent offenders.CoreCivic, the private company that runs the Otay Mesa Detention Center, confirmed to 10News that an employee who works at the facility has tested positive for COVID-19.The company discovered the positive test on March 30. The confirmation comes the same day California officials announced the state would grant an early release to 3,500 non-violent offenders who are due to be released in the next 60 days. The move is in efforts to slow the spread of the virus through state prisons. The plan will also see facilities maximize open spaces to increase capacity and inmate movement options, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.RELATED: San Diego International airport worker, TSA officer test positive for coronavirus“We do not take these new measures lightly. Our first commitment at CDCR is ensuring safety – of our staff, of the incarcerated population, of others inside our institutions, and of the community at large,” said CDCR Secretary Ralph Diaz. “However, in the face of a global pandemic, we must consider the risk of COVID-19 infection as a grave threat to safety, too.”A CDCR release said prisons would begin new measures, including mandatory verbal and temperature screenings for staff, suspension of intake from certain county jails, suspension of visitations and access by volunteers, hygiene and educational measures, and physical distancing. As of Monday, the CDCR says 22 employees and four inmates have tested positive for COVID-19. 1976
