CINCINNATI -- Kroger Co. has joined Dick's Sporting Goods and Walmart in tightening its policy on gun sales after a school shooting killed 17 in Parkland, Florida. The Wall Street Journal reports the Cincinnati-based grocery chain will stop selling guns to anybody under 21 at 43 Fred Meyer locations, mostly located in western states."Recent events demonstrate the need for additional action on the part of responsible gun retailers," the company wrote in a statement to CNBC. "We believe these are common sense steps we can take immediately that are in line with our values and our vision." On Wednesday morning, Dick's Sporting Goods, the nation's largest sporting goods retailer, announced it would?stop selling assault-style weapons and raise its minimum age for gun purchases to 21. Walmart quickly followed, also raising its minimum age to 21.Read the full statement from Kroger below.Kroger's vision is to serve America through food inspiration and uplift. In response to the tragic events in Parkland and elsewhere, we've taken a hard look at our policies and procedures for firearm sales. We follow all state and local laws regulating the sales of sporting-related firearms at our select general-merchandise Fred Meyer stores.Recent events demonstrate the need for additional action on the part of responsible gun retailers. We are raising the minimum age to 21 to purchase firearms and ammunition in all of our Fred Meyer locations that sell firearms. We stopped selling assault-style rifles in our Oregon, Washington and Idaho Fred Meyer stores several years ago and we will no longer accept any special-orders of these weapons in Alaska. Through Restock Kroger, we have a robust space optimization effort underway in many of our stores, including Fred Meyer locations. As we refresh stores we are often transitioning gun departments due to softer demand and changing customer preferences. We believe these are common sense steps we can take immediately that are in line with our values and our vision. 2030

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) — Upstairs in the visiting room he teared up saying this was a big misunderstanding.Thomas Escajeda, 61, is accused of threatening St. Rose of Lima church and a school at 293 H St. Tuesday, according to Chula Vista Police. Police says he threatened to harm parishioners attending a mass for All Saints Day on Thursday at 8 a.m.Escajeda, however, told 10News from jail Thursday that the accusations are a mistake. Escajeda, who has attended the church for a year, said he called the church with the idea to sell hot chocolate, coffee and maybe some donuts to warm the congregation up during the cold morning hours before service. He says it was the phrase, "I'd make a killing," that sent the person on the other end into a panic.RELATED: Chula Vista church receives threat against All Saints Day massThe mass and Thursday classes were canceled despite the arrest. If Escajeda did say those words the timing couldn't have been worse with the synagogue shooting in Pittsburgh last Saturday.Thursday, he had one message — directed to his wife and stepdaughter."I miss them every day, even though I've been here for a day and a half, basically think before you speak," Escajeda said.10News has reached out to the church to verify Escajeda's story. CINCINNATI -- The University of Cincinnati will pay former UC police officer Ray Tensing 4,000 in back pay and legal fees, the university president wrote Thursday.Tensing was the police officer who shot and killed Sam DuBose during a traffic stop in 2015. UC fired Tensing on July 29, 2015. However, the police union contract states that employees charged with a felony may be placed on paid leave until the court case is resolved. Tensing brought a contractual grievance to the university regarding his termination, according to UC President Neville Pinto.UC agreed to pay Tensing 4,230 in back pay and benefits for Tensing and 0,000 for his legal fees to resolve the grievance. In return, Tensing agreed to resign his position as a university law enforcement officer and to never return to employment at UC. "I realize this agreement will be difficult for our community," Neville wrote in a letter announcing the agreement. "I am nevertheless hopeful that we can focus on supporting each other as members of the same Bearcat family — even, perhaps especially, if we don’t agree."The case prompted Black Lives Matter Cincinnati and other groups to organize marches and rallies as the community waited to hear if Tensing would face charges and, later, what jurors would decide. "The tragic loss of Samuel Dubose in July 2015 was a trying time in the life of our University," Pinto wrote Thursday. "Our community came together to mourn, listen, support, heal and hope. That work continues as we strive to live our values into action."Authorities charged Tensing with murder and voluntary manslaughter in DuBose's death. However, two juries were unable to reach a unanimous verdict, prompting a judge to declare two mistrials in the case before the charges were dropped.?After DuBose's death, Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters had dismissed Tensing's reason for stopping DuBose off campus -- a missing front license plate -- calling it a "chicken-crap stop." He also said Tensing "should never have been a police officer."But after the trials, Deters lamented that the jurors would have not voted to convict a police officer, blaming division in the U.S. over race and police issues. He called the case "heartbreaking."The shooting prompted a top-to-bottom review of the University of Cincinnati Police Department. That review brought new training for officers in techniques like de-escalation, changes in their best practices like arming officers with Tasers as a non-lethal option and a turnover in leadership, including the hiring of the department's first female chief

CINCINNATI -- A school bus crash Monday afternoon on Winton Road in Cincinnati left a 12-year-old girl in "critical" condition, flung a 2-year-old boy onto the road and resulted in the hospitalization of at least 18 other children, according to Lt. Steve Saunders. At least 11 children, including the seriously injured boy and girl, were taken away in ambulances Monday afternoon after the Pleasant Hill Academy bus and four other vehicles collided around 2:30 p.m. Nine others were taken to Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center after their parents took them there to be checked out."I was devastated," parent Latisha McKelton said of the moment she heard about the crash. "I didn’t know what was wrong with my child. I just had to jump in the first moving vehicle and get here as fast as I could to my child. I didn't know if he was injured. I didn't know if he was going to be alive. I just didn't know. I was praying the whole way."According to a news release from Cincinnati police, a total of around 40 people were involved in the crash.Police said the bus was traveling southbound on Winton when a northbound vehicle driven by 23-year-old Robert Jett made an ill-fated attempt to pass the vehicle in front of him.Jett lost control of his car and struck another, this one driven by Jordan Ervin and transporting a pair of toddlers. Ervin's vehicle spun out of control and hit the bus; bus driver Tina Turnbow attempted to control her spinning vehicle and struck a fourth car, this one driven by LeAndre Acoff.Ervin was hospitalized in serious condition, as were his two passengers: The 2-year-old and a 1-year-old.The injured 12-year-old had been riding in the school bus at the time of the crash, according to the release. A district assistant superintendent went to Children's Hospital to help families there. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the families who are affected by this," Saunders said.He added charges were pending against Jett. 2010
