DETROIT, Michigan — John Lind is a veteran and military historian who is about to embark on the adventure of a lifetime.It’s a jump in honor of the 75th anniversary of D-Day, when allied forces, including the U.S. stormed the beaches of Normandy to eradicate Adolf Hitler’s control.Lind is among more than 200 parachutists handpicked from all over the world to do the jump in England. They will commemorate the landings that happened on D-Day (the beginning of the end of World War II).“The didn’t have to do it. They stopped Europe from being oppressed and brought liberty and freedom back to Europe,” Lind said of the day the troops landed in Normandy.Lind is the director of the Detroit Arsenal of Democracy Museum and has completed 165 other jumps, but he’s been training for this next feat for two years.“You’ll see waves of C-47 coming across the channel, 30 to 40 aircraft coming across,” he said. “They’ll be dropping 10 men in groups of three. Once they jump out of the plane, they may feel light as air, but they’ll be wearing … gear that weight more than 100 pounds.”The “fear keeps you sharp,” Lind said.James Bertolino is a firefighter who parachuted there for the 65th anniversary of D-Day. Earlier this month, the US Air Force ended height restrictions for pilots in hopes of attracting a more diverse pool of candidates, which the Air Force hopes will result in more female applicants. The new rules went into effect on May 13 for applicants.Previously, pilots were required to stand 64 to 77 inches tall. The Air Force said that medical and operations communities will apply an anthropometric screening process to individual applicants for placement in an aircraft they can safely fly as they pursue a rated track. The Air Force says that its previous requirement eliminated about 44% of female applicants age 20 to 29. “Historically, most of our aircraft were engineered around the height of an average male, not females,” said Lt. Col. Jessica Ruttenber, Air Force mobility planner and programmer and team leader on the Women’s Initiative Team.Government data says that the average American adult woman stands 63.8 inches tall, while the average man in the US stands 69.3 inches. The Air Force had a waiver process that allowed applicants who didn’t meet height requirements the opportunity to be considered, but the Air Force said that the process could have scared off applicants. “While most height waivers were approved under the old system, feedback indicated the entire waiver process served as a barrier, which negatively impacted female rated accessions,” said Lt. And what is it doing there?A family in Highland, Michigan, believes their house is haunted and what's even more disturbing is that whatever is haunting the home is doing harm to their little girl.Heather Brough and Joshua Higgins say they couldn't believe what they saw on their nanny cam."It’s almost like she sees something that we don’t," Brough said. It’s an image she and Higgins say is haunting their home."It was chilling," Higgins said. "It was literally a chill down your spine, like that 'what if' factor — is this what I just saw?"Caught on the couple's nanny cam video a few weeks ago is what appears to be something moving in front of the baby crib. The couple says it appears to be a ghost."I freaked out," Brough said. "I stopped what I was doing and I ran upstairs and grabbed my daughter."She says this so-called ghost scratched her daughter Lily and attacked her too."It scares us that it could do something else," Brough said. "I mean, there was a morning I woke up and I felt like someone’s hands were around my neck."A team of paranormal investigators came in and tried to answer some of the couple's questions and concerns. Higgins' father Jim says it may be someone who lived in this house before."The gentleman that lived here originally committed suicide apparently by jumping out this window, which is one story down," said Joshua's father, Jim Higgins, while recalling a story he was told about the home.
