SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A new streaming documentary follows young San Diegans on a life-changing trip to the Philippines."Filgrimage" focuses on eight Filipino-Americans during a 2019 summer trip to the Philippines with The Filipino School."If we don't have programs like this, then we as Filipino-Americans are only going to know what we have time to know, or what we're exposed to," says Tony Olaes, the founder of The Filipino School and organizer of the trip.He says a similar trip to the Philippines 14 years ago inspired him to learn more about his culture. That's what he hopes this trip does for the people who take it."I went from not wanting to be Filipino to 'Mr. Filipino,'" he says. "It's because I understood something amazingly beautiful about who I was. So that's how this all started."Olaes took 23 people on the trip in 2019. A documentary crew followed them as they visited several parts of the archipelago."This is something that you can't really get unless you actually experience it for yourself," says Jocelynne Monteheromoso, one of the teens profiled in the documentary. "The fact that we were going through it and it was recorded on camera is just something so beautiful that I feel that our generation especially needs to know about.""I hope this encourages anyone who is embarrassed of their culture, or straight away or doesn't even know about their culture, to try and put some work to figure out more about it," says Ryah Hernandez, who says she discovered a beauty in the region that she didn't know about from family trips as a child.San Diego has the second-largest Filipino population of any county in the US. Olaes says he hopes this documentary will give people who don't have the time or means to take a trip like this a glimpse into their ancestral homeland. He calls it a typical American story."The minute we start to reach into an inquire into where we all came from and the beauty of where we came from, it's that beauty that we get to bring to the United States," says Olaes.As part of the trip, the teens also helped build homes for low-income people in the Philippines.The documentary is 14 parts and lasts around two hours. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Carlos couple says they were amazed after reaching out to neighbors about gifting some holiday cheer to those in need.Twas the time before Christmas, and the Kvendru home in San Carlos bears similarities to Santa’s workshop."Not a lot of space on the counters. It's like a hoarder home," laughed Renae Kvendru.For Renae Kvendru and her husband David, the journey to this moment began eight holidays ago, when they handed out some 12 Ziploc bags filled with supplies to the homeless. Since then, their efforts have grown slowly every year.This year, they decided to appeal to their neighbors on the Nextdoor app for supplies."The response was overwhelming and extremely heartwarming. I was expecting 20 jackets, and I got hundreds," said Kvendru.Their converted garage is filled with boxes of donations, including other clothing items, gloves, shoes and umbrellas. The couple also plans to hand out COVID-prevention kits."We made COVID bags ... a couple of masks, hand sanitizer, and wipes," said Kvendru.In all, the couple has put together some 300 gift bags and stockings filled with snacks and toiletries, including some special bags for kids that come with a stuffed animal.Renae gets emotional when talking about a gift she received as a child."I grew up poor, though I was never on the streets and always had food. One year, I think it was Toys for Tots ... some big truck came by our house and gave me a big teddy bear. There are pictures of me hugging that teddy bear. Just remembered how happy that teddy bear used to make me as a kid. If you can give someone that moment, that’s pretty awesome," said Kvendru.Starting this weekend, the couple will drive through areas with homeless populations and start passing out their holiday gifts."If you can help make one person’s day a little brighter, you’ve done good ... I hope this can inspire others to do little things to help the homeless or less fortunate. We need to help another," said Kvendru. 1987

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Point Loma grandmother put up Christmas lights to spread cheer during California's stay-home order. It started when Johnene Smith saw Italians singing in solidarity amid a lock down due to the Coronavirus pandemic. She then heard about people putting up Christmas lights to brighten neighbors spirits and something clicked."I'm like I can do that! I don't have to leave my house and people can walk by and see the heart and [spread] just a little joy," Smith said.So she put up a glowing heart in her living room window. "I went and found a piece of cardboard, made a heart and poked little holes and put the lights in it, so they could see my heart is out there for everyone." Smith hoped it would bring some much needed joy during the stay-at-home order which is keeping her from her seven grandchildren. "The youngest is going to be a year old in two weeks and we're not going to be able to go to her birthday party," She said sadly.She took this time to focus instead on what she can control, which is her happiness. Particularly, that means reminiscing about Christmastime, "it was really the last time we had joy before everything started was at Christmastime so why not bring back a little joy in a time where we can't control it."Her display went up Friday sparking her neighbors to light up their own homes.Neighbor Jojo Peters was thrilled at the idea. "When Johnene says let's do lights, I said okay! And I went and dug them out as fast as I could and threw them up!"Both want to spread love and calm.'I just want them to see the hope that's there, and that we're all there for each other,' she said.Smith hopes more San Diegans join in spreading cheer in this time of uncertainty. 1721

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A Rolando resident is taking Halloween decor to new heights this month, with a NASA-themed display outside his home.Greg Jones is known in the neighborhood for his elaborate Halloween displays. Every year, locals expect an out-of-this-world display. This year, he took that reputation literally.Saturday night, dozens of neighbors and volunteers witnessed the inaugural rocket launch outside the home at 4648 Rolando Blvd., which took months to complete.The celebratory launch came complete with Jones in costume as an astronaut, a moon rover, space capsules, and a 30-foot rocket.The massive space display will be up through Halloween, with a "rocket launch" visible each night.In years past, Jones has delivered a heaping dose of Halloween to his street, bringing mammoth displays including a giant Octopus and King Kong to life over his home. 872

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A neighbor says San Diego Police were called to the home of Trevor Heitmann the morning of the deadly freeway crash.According to the CHP, the 18-year-old was in his McLaren sports car when he drove south in the northbound lanes of the 805 freeway near Sorrento Valley Thursday just before 5 p.m. He collided head on with an SUV. Both cars burst into flames.Aileen Pizarro and her 12-year-old daughter Aryana were killed instantly.Heitmann also died. A neighbor, who doesn't want to be identified, says she's known the family roughly 15 years, "he was a normal kid, we went to elementary school with him and everything was totally normal."RELATED: 'The Rock' sends message to grieving SD family"He went off to La Jolla Country Day from then on I mainly saw him playing basketball with a couple of guys in the street, " she said.She said once Heitmann, who was known on Twitter as "McSkillet," started getting into on line video games, he stopped playing basketball outside.The neighbor said she saw police at the family's Carmel Valley home Thursday morning just hours before the fatal crash."There were probably three police cars, I would guess five officers and they were talking to his mother out in the driveway," she said.RELATED: Statement from driver's family in fatal crashShe also noticed an SUV blocking the family's driveway. Heitmann's McLaren sportscar was in the garage and the door was open."Now it makes sense. It was actually blocking the McLaren that was sitting inside the garage," she said.Later that afternoon, she said her husband heard a crash."He saw the McLaren zoom away and then it was a little while later that we had the news on and saw that there was a horrific accident," she said. Shortly after, she said she saw a CHP officer talking to Heitmann's dad.She says that's when she learned from the boy's father that the family had been worried about the 18-year-old's behavior."He told me five days earlier, that Trevor had just snapped, that was the word he used. He started making threats, or started saying he was driving at high speed, down the wrong side of the street and through red lights and he said that's what prompted him to come to San Diego," said the neighbor, who added that the boy's parents were divorced and his dad lived in Colorado.RELATED: Mother and daughter remembered after I-805 crashShe said the teenager's dad also shared with her that his son hit the SUV that was blocking the driveway and nearly hit him."He said he almost hit me. This was him going back to the context of saying he had just snapped. And I said, 'you mean hit you as a person,' and he said, 'yeah I was standing out here because we were supposed to go to a psychiatrist,'" she said.San Diego Police have not confirmed to 10News that officers were called to the family's home that morning. These people were obviously very concerned to the degree that they called the police, especially in the face, they are very private people," she said.Clinical Psychologist Michelle Marie Carcel said forcing a kid who is over 18 to get psychiatric help can be complicated. She said parents need to be clear when calling 911 that they think their child is a danger to themselves or others."The most important thing is to really stress that in the call. I am concerned that my child is going to hurt themselves or hurt someone else, that kind of urgency really triggers that response from the officers," said Carcel.We don't know the circumstances of the call that day or if officers had contact with the 18-year-old. 4059
