VISTA (CNS) - A fire badly damaged a home in a Vista neighborhood early Saturday morning, a fire official said. The fire broke out around 6 a.m. at a house on Lado de Loma Drive near Phillips Street, according to Vista Deputy Fire Chief Ned Vander Pol. The neighborhood is near the Civic Center Drive exit off state Route 78.Firefighters from the Vista, San Marcos and Oceanside fire departments arrived and found smoke and flames coming out several openings in the home, including a skylight and windows on two sides of the house, Vander Pol said. The four residents -- two adults and two children -- had already evacuated by the time firefighters got to the home.It took crews about 30 minutes to knock the flames down, according to Vander Pol. The cause of the fire was under investigation and value of the damage wasn't immediately able to be determined, but the deputy fire chief said there was significant smoke and fire damage throughout the home.Vander Pol said the home didn't have working smoke detectors, but the residents told firefighters they had often practiced an escape plan -- which turned out to be useful when the fire broke out.The American Red Cross assisted the four displaced residents with temporary shelter, Vander Pol said 1256

WASHINGTON — Vandalism at four downtown Washington churches after rallies in support of President Donald Trump is exposing rifts among people of faith as the nation confronts bitter post-election political divisions. The houses of worship that were vandalized included two historically Black churches where people ripped down Black Lives Matter banners. Video posted to social media showed one banner being burned, defacement that police say is being investigated as possible hate crimes. Rev. Dr. Ianther Mills, the senior pastor at Asbury United Methodist Church, compared the vandalism of the banners to a cross burning in a statement released on Sunday. On Monday, she said she hoped evangelical Christians condemn the vandalism, but added that she didn't want to make her statements about politics. At the Mount Vernon Place United Methodist Church nearby, a banner with colors supporting LGBTQ rights was slashed by protesters.“People need to denounce it and call it an act of racial violence,” Claycomb Sokol told The Associated Press. “People who have been really quick to be silent need to wrestle with what actually took place on our streets on Saturday, and how silence can actually be a sign of support, of complicity.”The vandalism also raised questions among some pastors and members at the churches about why more fellow Christians were not speaking out against the incidents. 1398

VISTA, Calif. (CNS) - A 54-year-old Poway man accused of killing a young woman in Carlsbad 33 years ago pleaded not guilty Tuesday to charges of murder and rape.James Charles Kingery faces 33 years to life in state prison if convicted of all charges stemming from the killing of 26-year-old Julia Hernandez-Santiago, according to the San Diego County District Attorney's Office. The victim's body was found on Oct. 10, 1987 on an ivy-covered embankment in the 2100 block of Alga Road, Carlsbad police spokesman Jodee Reyes said. The San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office determined the cause of death was asphyxiation due to strangulation. While a suspect was not identified at the time of the killing, investigators said technological advances eventually led to Kingery's arrest. In March, San Diego County sheriff's deputies arrested a man on narcotics and weapons violations and took a DNA sample from him, as required by law based on his alleged offenses, Reyes said. Then in May, the sheriff's crime lab notified Carlsbad police that DNA samples from the 1987 murder case were a match for Kingery, who was arrested July 22.A suspected motive for the killing has not been disclosed."When a murder goes unsolved, not only is justice delayed, but families are left in turmoil with no closure," District Attorney Summer Stephan said in a statement. "Working with Carlsbad Police Department detectives, who never gave up, our office is bringing a measure of justice to Ms. Hernandez-Santiago's family and giving hope to other victims in unsolved cases."Kingery is being held on million bail. He's due back in court Sept. 4 for a readiness conference. 1662

VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Californians are getting ready for a new set of businesses to reopen after June 12, 2020. Last Friday, the state released specific COVID-19 guidelines for several industries, including gyms, bars, and hotels. Vista Fitness owner Brian Belasco is setting up cones in his parking lot to create social distancing spots for his patrons. He's doing this well in advance of the state's gym reopenings on June 12."Being able to reopen means the world to us," Belasco said. Last Friday, Gov. Gavin Newsom released specific guidelines for the next group of industries allowed to reopen with modifications, no sooner than June 12, 2020. They include gyms, schools, film production, professional sports, bars and wineries, hotels, cardrooms, family entertainment, museums, and zoos. Since mid-March, Belasco said his trainers have been successfully teaching online workout classes. "We just finished a virtual challenge," Belasco said. "We had members losing up to 30 pounds in 28 days."But he said he is ready to see his members in person. "It's the camaraderie, especially times like right now, bringing people together that is our specialty," Belasco said. That is why he says he is implementing many of the State's new gym guidelines, which include:Limiting the number of members insideConducting temperature and health screenings upon entryStaggering lockers and machinesProviding disinfecting wipes or gel for hands and equipment No sharing water bottles or towelsWearing masksFor weeks, Belasco has been practicing these guidelines already with his coaches and volunteers. "They get called in one by one, temperature check, foot bath, hand sanitizer, and then they get pointed to their station, and they're all spread out in this room," Belasco said as he pointed at the mat in the middle of the gym. So when June 12 rolls around, Belasco said the new guidelines will seem like old news. "We've been ready. We've been researching. We have all of the supplies, and we are ready to go," Belasco said proudly. All businesses in this category will require the San Diego County Public Health Officer's approval before they can reopen. WASHINGTON (AP) — A Trump health appointee who is accused of trying to muzzle an important scientific publication in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic apologized Tuesday for a separate video in which he reportedly says scientists battling the virus are conspiring against President Donald Trump and warns of shooting in America if Trump loses the election.Michael Caputo, the top spokesman for the Department of Health and Human Services, apologized to his staff for the Facebook video, said an administration official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss internal matters.Caputo says on a taxpayer-funded podcast that Democrats don't want a coronavirus vaccine until after the election to punish President Donald Trump. News reports alleged last week that Caputo’s office tried to take over and muzzle a scientific weekly from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that publishes what is supposed to be authoritative, unvarnished information about disease-fighting efforts, including, most importantly at present, COVID-19.Then on Monday came an account of the video on Caputo’s personal Facebook page in which he accused government scientists of conspiring against Trump and suggested violence could break out after the election.HHS is standing by Caputo amid calls for his ouster. 1315
