DENVER, Colo. – Powerful images emerged from downtown Denver on Saturday. Hundreds of people protesting police brutality laid face down at the Colorado state capitol to honor George Floyd, the Minneapolis man who died in police custody last Monday. The unique demonstration mirrored the position Floyd was in during his final moments, face down against pavement.A viral video of the 46-year-old’s arrest shows a police officer kneeling on Floyd’s neck as he gasped for air and said “I can’t breathe” before he lost consciousness. He was pronounced dead at an area hospital shortly after. The officer who knelt on Floyd’s neck, Derek Chauvin, was arrested and charged with the man’s murder on Friday. Chauvin and three other officers have also been fired from the Minneapolis Police Department for their role in Floyd’s death, but many say it’s not enough and they want to see the other officers face charges as well.Saturday's protest in Denver was one of many across the country demanding justice for Floyd. It began peacefully but turned tense during the evening hours. There were several small fires and instances of fireworks. Crowds of protesters built makeshift fences to try to hold their ground as officers began to enforce an 8 p.m. curfew put in place by the mayor. Police say they ended up 1313
Communities in Louisiana are taking the first steps toward recovery after Hurricane Barry made landfall in the state as a Category 1 storm Saturday before being downgraded to a tropical storm.New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell announced during a news conference Sunday that many staples of city life would soon resume, including public transportation and garbage pick up, while municipal offices would reopen Monday.Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards said all state offices would be open Monday, except in three parishes where there are still power outages.Barry -- which weakened to a tropical depression Sunday as it moved slowly north across Louisiana and into Arkansas -- had put Louisiana on high alert for much of the weekend with a threat of epic flooding. Much of that threat failed to materialize. New Orleans, in particular, did not see the catastrophic storm surges that had been feared."I for one, am extremely grateful that the forecasted rains and flooding did not materialize," Edwards said. " This was a storm ... that could have played out very, very differently." 1089
Determining how to prevent mass shootings in the United States has been a complicated debate, but there's new evidence that one intervention could play a role in reducing the violence: "red flag" orders.Extreme risk protection order laws, colloquially known as "red flag" or ERPO laws, allow the temporary removal of guns from people deemed at high risk of harming themselves or others. They've been presented as possible solutions to help prevent the mass shootings that plague the United States.Preliminary research, 531
