BEIJING, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- Chinese farmers have begun to reap crops as autumn drew to a close, and the nation is expecting a good harvest this year, China's Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) said here Tuesday in a statement on its website.The forecast is based upon higher average yields and an estimate that China's planting area for autumn crops rose by 10 million Mu (about 667,000 hectares) from one year ago, said the ministry.According to figures from the MOA, a total of 386 million mu of crops had been harvested by Sept. 27, accounting for 33.3 percent of the total.In a break down of the harvest, 130 million mu of rice, or nearly 50 percent of the total rice planted, had been reaped, while 140 million mu of corn and 60.7 million mu of soybean were harvested, accounting for 28.5 percent and 46.5 percent of the total, respectively, said the MOA.The ministry also arranged for 29 million sets of farm equipment to help with the autumn harvest, it said.China's grain output reached 530.8 million tonnes in 2009, the sixth consecutive year of growth in grain yield.In the wake of a severe drought in China's southwestern regions earlier in the year, summer grain output this year stood at 123.1 million tons, down 0.3 percent from one year ago.

Results of the 8-billion-yuan census will be released by the end of next April.WHEN MIDNIGHT CAMEWhen it came to midnight on Monday and the census was officially begun, 28-year-old Wang Yi in Jinan, capital of east China's Shandong, began knocking on a door in an apartment building.A young man with a drowsy look opened the door.Wang, after showing his certificate as a census worker, explained why he had to disturb him at midnight. In the preliminary poll conducted to prepare for the census, Wang and his colleagues could not find him. Neither did the young man respond to the notice that census takers left at his door.The man, who had missed the poll due to business elsewhere, appeared to be very cooperative and quickly fill out the questionnaire which had questions about name, age, job and housing condition.In Zhejiang, a east China province with active private economy, census takers are visiting migrant workers at night.In dim light on a square of Huzhou City, Zhejiang, 16 martial arts performers from Henan living in their vans were interviewed.After the interviews, each of the 16 migrants received a card proving that they had been surveyed so that they would not be counted twice.DIFFERENCE THIS TIMEDifferent from previous census, the floating population this year was registered at where they actually live, rather than where their permanent residence is as written on their ID cards.Also, for the first time people from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, as well as foreigners in the Chinese mainland, are included in the census. But those on short-term business or sight-seeing trips will not be covered.The census will collect data on foreigner's name, age, gender, nationality, educational attainment, purpose and duration of stay. "During the preliminary poll, she refused to tell us her phone number."Wang and her colleagues took turns buying pickles from the lady, who finally told them her phone number.Wang's fellow worker, 58-year-old Zhu Rongquan, noted that in some compounds the real estate companies were not very cooperative. "In one compound the real estate company even warned us not to disturb the residents."Zhu had to wait outside in the cold wind, approaching the residents before they entered the building gate."Some residents were sympathetic, asking us to go in and gave us a cup of hot water," he said gratefully.During the door-to-door visit, census takers could encounter various problems.Wang Bin, a 38-year-old worker from Shijiazhuang City of Hebei, could not find a man registered as being born in 1919. SHIJIAZHUANG, Sept.10 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Friday, the nation's Teachers' Day, called on teachers to dedicate themselves to rural education, improving teaching standards and contributing to the modernization of the country's education program.Wen made those remarks during a visit to a middle school in Xinglong County of north China's Hebei Province, which is about 135 km from Beijing.Teachers play a key role in primary education, which lays the foundation for a country's development, Wen said, adding that Chinese teachers had made contributions to the country's education cause and modernization drive through hard work and selfless devotion.Wen stressed it was important to improve rural education as it is a matter concerning the long-term development of rural areas and the improvement of people's skills.Persistent efforts would be made to ensure students in rural areas have universal access to schooling and modern education, he said.In 2007, China decided to waive tuition fees for students training to become teachers at six top teaching universities in Beijing, Shanghai, Changchun, Wuhan, Xi'an and Chongqing.To be eligible for free tuition, the student must agree to work at a primary or middle school for at least ten years after graduation and spend the first two years in a rural school.The first group of students who enrolled under the tuition-free program are scheduled to graduate next summer.Eight students from the Beijing Normal University who are in the program joined Wen in his visit to the rural school Friday.Wen urged the students from the university to develop a better understanding of China's rural area, contribute to rural education and help build their hometowns into better places after graduation.The premier asked them to make rural education their career and prepare themselves for hardships and challenges.He said the government would continue its support to the program of tuition-free education for normal school teachers and provide them with opportunities of receiving further education and grant favorable policies in employment.
