Up until the COVID-19 pandemic, the club held their meetings at Border X Brewing in Barrio Logan."There is no way I could just cancel it because of COVID-19 or just stop it, it’d be hard for me. It became something I honestly didn’t expect and I knew this was something we needed in the industry," Favela described.Thankfully, Favela didn't have to because the answer wasn't far. It was right across the street at an old vacant taproom brewhouse."It's got a full brewing system and a tap system. One conversation led to another and we were in the space within 24 hours," Favela said.The new space is where the brew club continued to hold its meetings and will make and serve craft beer."Yes, we are minorities and yes it is going to be Latinas and women, but the amount of support and excitement from the girls, from the public ... the beers we plan to make to make there will be an expression of all the girls from all different, all colors basically," Favela said.They served coffee and other non-alcoholics drinks until their licensing got approved, but inside, excitement was overflowing."I think this will hopefully open that door to really celebrate more women in beer in San Diego," said Favela. 1549

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Computers have become a lifeline to San Diegans during the pandemic and a new partnership between the city and non-profit San Diego Futures Foundation could make it easier for people in need to get connected.Executive Director of San Diego Futures Foundation Gary Knight said the need skyrocketed the first three weeks of the shut down in March, "we distributed over half our annual inventory in that three weeks."That's more than 1,500 computers. The non profit partners with companies like Qualcomm, General Atomics and San Diego County to take on their old computers, refurbish them and connect them with people in need.City of San Diego Digital Strategy Manager Jen Lebron said 30,000 households don't have a computer, just within the city limits.Right now that means limited connection to healthcare, education and job seeking material."San Diego Futures Foundation has an incredibly broad reach, that way we can get these computers in the hands of students, seniors, veterans, foster families and non profits that really need the help," Lebron said.Michelle Sanudo recieved a computer from SDFF this month and said it's made her feel independent and successful. She's a single mom who relied on the library to entertain her four and one-year-old children while she worked."Really it was kind of like a sanctuary, I would get to do my paperwork for school, also apply for jobs," Sanudo said."When they closed the libraries that's when it hit me." She said the computer allows her to order groceries so she can keep her family safe during the pandemic and pursue her dream of becoming a medical assistant.As the need for computers continues in San Diego and SDFF's inventory wanes, they need more donations. That's where the city is stepping in. For the past year the city has been vetting the non profit. Wednesday the City Council Economic Development and Intergovernmental Relations Committee unanimously approved the partnership. Now it must go before the full council to receive approval. The item is on the docket for Tuesday, the 21st."We are ready with nearly 2,300 computers that we can give to San Diego Futures Foundation." SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As the Padres take the field on Friday for their home opener against the Arizona Diamondbacks, fans will not be in the stands in the traditional sense.Instead, the Padres plan to deploy cut-outs of players' family members or loved ones, military members, and select fans to populate Petco Park's seats.During the season, fan cardboard cutouts will be placed in the Lexus Home Plate Club Seats behind home plate, according to the team. The department has struggled to recruit and retain officers due to the city’s high cost of living and a pay scale that’s lower than competing police departments. A San Diego Police officer earns a starting salary of ,000 a year. Late last year, the City Council approved a series of salary increases of up to 25 percent through 2020. The San Diego Police Department currently has about 1,860 officers, which is about 180 short of its staffing goal. Chief David Nisleit said Tuesday that SDPD recently lost two officers to Chula Vista, whose entry level officers earn about ,000 a year. “What I’m looking for is to hire experienced law enforcement officers from other areas,” he said. "To make us competitive we had to offer a signing bonus to have them come over.”A lateral police officer - one moving from another department - would earn ,000 upon hire, then another ,000 after training, and the final ,000 after one year of continuous employment. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — California's regional stay-at-home orders will go into effect in San Diego County on Sunday after the Southern California region fell below the 15% ICU threshold that triggers the restrictions.The state Department of Public Health announced the Southern California region, which includes San Diego, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, Imperial, Inyo, Mono, San Bernardino, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Ventura counties, fell to 13.1% ICU capacity on Friday. That number dropped to 12.5% on Saturday.The restrictions will begin for a region at 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, according to the state.
