LAKESIDE, Calif. (KGTV) -- Officials with the Lakeside Union School District confirmed the closure of Winter Gardens Elementary School due to a COVID-19 outbreak.In a letter sent to families and school personnel Thursday, LUSD Superintendent Dr. Andy Johnsen acknowledged that “there have been 12 positive cases identified at Winter Gardens over the last two weeks” and because of the outbreak, the campus on 8501 Pueblo Rd. would be closed for 15 days starting Dec. 4.The school’s Extended School Services (ESS) will also be shut down.Dr. Johnsen said they closed the school Friday as, "all of the other cases we've had up until this point no other person has been identified as a close contact."Winter Gardens Elementary will proceed with distance learning from Dec. 4-18, according to Dr. Johnsen. The initial plan is to reopen the campus for in-person learning on Jan. 4.Dr. Johnsen noted that “staff members and students that may have come into close contact with the positive individuals have been directly contacted by San Diego County Public Health with further instructions.”“Because of how COVID-19 spreads, public health officials have indicated that all of us should consider ourselves as being potentially exposed,” Dr. Johnsen said in the letter.Dr. Johnsen said the infections likely originated off-campus. A La Jolla Immunologist agreed with that theory, saying on the molecular level adults are more likely to pass the virus to each other and not get it from children.Dr. Johnsen said the 12 infections is out of 308 students and staff combined. He said public health officials recommend closing schools when they reach a 5% infection threshold.He said students and staff were wearing masks, socially distant and the district hired cleaning staff to sanitize high touch points each hour and classrooms overnight. LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Arkansas State Police say a man suspected of stealing a taxi was fatally shot by a trooper after the man stabbed and wounded another law enforcement officer over the weekend.State police say 58-year-old Aloysius Keaton of Little Rock crashed the stolen cab while exiting off Interstate 30 and stabbed an Arkansas Highway Patrol officer who tried to arrest him.Police say the trooper shot Keaton after a shock from a stun gun failed to stop him as he approached the trooper with the weapon.The trooper ordered Keaton to stop and drop the weapon, but police say he failed to comply with the order and charged toward the officer, who then shot the suspect with a handgun.Keaton later died from his injuries at an area hospital Saturday night.State police say the Highway Police officer was treated and released and the trooper was uninjured.Keaton’s body has been transported to the Arkansas State Crime Laboratory where an autopsy will be conducted.The trooper remains on paid administrative leave and has not yet been identified. 1056

(KGTV) - The mother of a crash victim is pleading for the driver of the car to come forward.Monica Cloyd said her son, Michael Gutierrez, was severely injured Saturday morning on Wildcat Canyon Road near the Barona Casino when the driver of the car he was in crashed into a pole.She says the car belonged to her son, a 23-year-old ironworker, but said he had been drinking so he gave his keys to his friend.RELATED: Prosecutors: Ramona driver tried to hide evidence of hit-and-run crashEarlier in the night, she said they had been at a party in La Jolla but her son’s friend ended up driving them to Barona instead of going home.They made it to the casino, but on the way back, the car crashed along Wildcat Canyon Road.Cloyd said a 16-year-old girl was also in the car and was seriously injured.RELATED: Hit-and-run victim placed on life support days before his wedding dayThe man who was driving ran from the scene, according to Cloyd. She said authorities have not been able to locate him. (KGTV) — Hundreds of protesters gathered at La Mesa City Hall on Saturday to demand justice for women of color, as police issued an order banning certain items in areas around the La Mesa Civic Center.The "We Demand Justice For Our Women Of Color" event called for justice for Breonna Taylor, killed by Louisville police officers in March, and Vanessa Guillen, a soldier at Fort Hood, in Texas, who was killed by another soldier in April, according to a flyer for the event.About 300 demonstrators gathered for the event, according to La Mesa Police. Police said many were gathered in a parking lot at Date Ave. and Allison Ave. near City Hall, before marching southbound from the location. A large group also gathered at the VFW lot at 8118 University Ave. and several groups were reportedly in the area on foot and in vehicles, police added.An ABC 10News photographer captured video showing a separate group of demonstrators with American and "Trump 2020" flags gathering as well. Police said many members of the group identified themselves as part of the “Defend East County” group.Police said that there were several physical altercations between the two groups as one group marched past the VFW. At least one arrest was made: Ryan McAdams, 35, of Jamul, was arrested on charges of battery and possession of pepper spray, as well as a probation violation, according to LMPD.City Councilwoman Dr. Akilah Weber told ABC 10News that she witnessed one scuffle, but saw protesters stop it before it became worse."Some of the members from the protest group jumped in between that one protester and the group of counter-protesters that were going back and forth and reminded the protester that's not what they were there for," Weber said. "They were not there to cause any harm to any residents to any businesses. The items were banned from the area surrounded by University Ave., Spring St., and Allison Ave. The city said anyone violating this order would be prosecuted.The police department said that it had, "made numerous attempts to communicate with organizers of the protest and march so we can work together to ensure a safe environment where their voices can be heard.
