"I even have shoes, accessories, floral head pieces, boutonnieres for guys and tuxedos for men."Love Wedding Chapel is what she calls it and she was able to pull it off thanks to help with a grant from the San Diego Black Chamber of Commerce. At a time she said when people are supporting more black owned businesses amid the fight for racial injustice, "I’m glad people are looking to support black owned businesses. Sometimes we have a lot more challenges, our population isn’t so big in San Diego." And in the middle of a global pandemic, Hendon said, "I’ve lost family members with COVID this year and I thought finding our joy is important so it brings me joy, and I hope to bring joy to others."She said there was no better time than now to create the business of her dreams, "I thought if we could bring a little bit of that dream to them and bring them a nice environment then it’d make their day a little special."She received her Masters in Business Administration last year and said everything she's learned and accomplished has helped make this business happen. "Resilience, following through and executive management. I use all my skill sets, it all comes in handy. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Baseball season is here and there's a way to celebrate without buying a ticket to the Padres game.The East Village Association is hosting its eighth annual Opening Day Block Party Friday and Saturday as the Padres host the Milwaukee Brewers at Petco Park.The free event will take place on J Street between 6th and 10th Avenues in East Village. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Coronavirus hospitalizations in San Diego continue to climb, prompting at least one medical system to begin plans to accommodate a surge in patients.As of Thursday, Scripps Health reported that it had 126 COVID-19 patients, up one patient from Wednesday. It also reported two coronavirus-related deaths in 24 hours. Scripps Health is moving forward with its virus patient surge plan by hiring more staff and converting more beds.“We've been staffing up dramatically and our engineers have been preparing for surge which we anticipate [requiring] given the direction hospitalizations are going in San Diego,” says Scripps Health CEO Chris Van Gorder.He says the majority of patients are still in the South Bay hospitals. Their teams have been transferring patients from Scripps Chula Vista and Scripps Mercy to the northern hospitals to avoid reaching capacity in the ICUs.“Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla is 95% occupied in the Intensive Care Unit and Mercy San Diego is 91% [occupied],” he adds.The number of positive tests in the northern hospitals is also rising, he says. “About three days ago, we had six patients within a 24-hour period of time [that had] to be admitted at Scripps Memorial Hospital in Encinitas and so their census has doubled over the last week,” he added.San Diego County reported on Wednesday that over a several-week span, hospitalizations were down but had increased in the past two weeks with the most recent daily count being 38 new admissions on Tuesday.The County’s statistics show that we are still far off from reaching bed-capacity.The federal field hospital set up at Palomar Hospital in Escondido continues to sit empty. A hospital spokesperson reported that there's no current plan that they're aware of to use it.According to Palomar Health, “We have seen an increase in patients over the last three-four weeks. Our Emergency Department Director says we have seen a noticeable increase in younger patients (20-30 year olds). SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - California police officers who leave their departments to join the San Diego Police can now get a ,000 cash bonus.The San Diego City Council unanimously approved the program Tuesday to help SDPD recruit new officers. The department has struggled to recruit and retain officers due to the city’s high cost of living and a pay scale that’s lower than competing police departments. A San Diego Police officer earns a starting salary of ,000 a year. Late last year, the City Council approved a series of salary increases of up to 25 percent through 2020. The San Diego Police Department currently has about 1,860 officers, which is about 180 short of its staffing goal. Chief David Nisleit said Tuesday that SDPD recently lost two officers to Chula Vista, whose entry level officers earn about ,000 a year. “What I’m looking for is to hire experienced law enforcement officers from other areas,” he said. "To make us competitive we had to offer a signing bonus to have them come over.”A lateral police officer - one moving from another department - would earn ,000 upon hire, then another ,000 after training, and the final ,000 after one year of continuous employment. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Border agents arrested 15 people over Presidents’ Day weekend during a smuggling event in Mission Bay.U.S. Border Patrol agents caught the smuggling incident in action on Saturday at about 2 p.m. at a Ski Beach launch ramp. As agents got closer, they say they noticed a large group of people quickly exiting the boat and heading for three vehicles.Agents stopped the individuals from getting away and questioned all 15 people involved in the incident.Agents say six people in the group were suspected of human smuggling and arrested. Five of them are U.S. citizens, including four men ranging from 20 to 30 years old and one 25-year-old woman, according to border officials.The nine other people arrested were male Mexican nationals ranging from 27 to 41 years old who admitted to being illegally present.U.S. Border Patrol seized the boat and three vehicles at the scene. 899
