SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - With unemployment near record lows through Labor Day, efforts are shifting from helping San Diegans get jobs to helping them land better ones.The San Diego Workforce Partnerships is teaming up with local employers to offer on-the-job training to workers so they can get certified and move up in their careers. The focus is currently on so-called middle-skill occupations, those that require something more than a high school diploma but less than a four-year degree. The state Employment Development Department says the five most in-demand middle-skill occupations in San Diego and Imperial Counties are accounting assistants, teacher assistants, medical assistants, heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers, and nursing assistants. The EDD says there are currently 2,500 openings for those positions. The Workforce Partnership recently teamed up with First Promise Care Service in El Cajon to offer its caregivers a two- to three-month certification program to become certified nursing assistants. "It does motivate because they know they're not just going to be there," said Dyna Jones, CEO of First Promise. "There's actually a promotion. There's growth, and people are looking for something like that."Jones said caregivers who complete the program could go from earning per hour to as much as as a team lead if they stay with the company. The Workforce Partnership has a new tool for San Diegans to look up information on different jobs, what they pay, and training requirements and opportunities. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- With a shortened and fanless baseball season underway, there is still confusion and legal challenges over refunds for tickets.Sydnie Gallegos lives in San Diego, but she is a loyal Dodgers fan. Every year, she and moe than a dozen of her family members see a game live at Dodgers Stadium. “We do it once a year, every year, for the last six years,” Gallegos said.Gallegos, like so many others, were left in the dark wondering what to do about tickets they bought.Her family bought tickets to a July 4th game back in March. “It was for 15 of me and my family members. That’s over ,400 just in tickets,” Gallegos said.Although Major League Baseball announced refund policies in April, Gallegos said they didn’t hear anything until July. They received an email from the Dodgers, offering ticketholders “with an account credit for all 2020 tickets and parking (plus applicable fees).”The team also added a 10 percent bonus credit, which could be applied for the 2021 season. A spokesperson for the Padres also said they’re also offering fans a refund or use their credit towards the 2021 season.Despite refunds now being issued to fans, a class action lawsuit over the issue continues. Several ticket buyers sued Major League Baseball, the teams, as well as StubHub, Ticketmaster, and Live Nation. The attorneys for the plaintiffs said they are still moving forward with the lawsuit because they “continue to pursue their claims so that each ticket purchaser for the MLB 2020 season will receive a full refund as soon as possible.”“As the season will have no fan attendance, Defendants have no reason to keep any of the ticket purchasers’ money,” attorney Blake Yagman wrote to Team 10. 1712

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two Carlsbad grocery store workers have tested positive for coronavirus, after the county reported COVID-19 cases among restaurant workers and another grocery employee.Sprouts confirmed two employees from the company's store at 2618 El Camino Real have tested positive. The two cases include:One team member who was last in the store on March 15One team member who was last in the store on March 17Sprouts said team members who may have come into contact with an infected colleague have been notified and asked to self-quarantine. San Diego (KGTV)- A local middle and high school team sweep a popular robotics competition beating out groups from all over the world.They call themselves “Team Inspiration.” The group of students has been working with robotics for nearly ten years.The team is comprised of six different schools in San Diego, including: Del Norte High, Scripps Ranch High, Rancho Bernardo High, Westview High, The Cambridge School, and Black Mountain Middle School.Last month the team competed in the 2020 International RoboSub Competition. Each team had to build an underwater robot.“The basic tasks include going underwater, seeing and recognizing images underwater, and going to wave points underwater,” says team member Colin Szeto.This Is the second year the group participated in the competition. Due to COVID-19, the competition was done virtually this time around.“It was a pretty good equalizer because we all got the same zoom playing field,” says Aditya Mavalankar.The student updated their robot design from last year and built an additional robot for the competition.“The idea was that both of them would go in the water together to distribute the tasks so that we could have more of an advantage,” says Ashiria Goel.The students also built the sensor navigation parts on the devices. It can “basically tell how far it is from other objects,” says Mavalankar. “We have cameras on multiple sides of the robots. We have hydrophones that’’s able to create an acoustic pinger in the pool.”Team Inspiration took home first place in the overall competition, technical design, and website.
