PARIS, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- French Prime Minister Francois Fillon Tuesday met with visiting Chinese State Councillor Dai Bingguo on bilateral ties at the Matignon Palace in Paris.     French President Nicolas Sarkozy and his Chinese counterpart Hu Jintao had reached consensus on the development of the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two nations during their meeting in New York last month, which charted the orientation for further development of their bilateral ties, Fillon said.     France would make joint efforts with China to implement the consensus reached by the two leaders, deepen the strategic cooperation and boost cooperation in fields of nuclear power, aviation, environmental protection, new energy and small and medium-sized enterprises, Fillon said.     For his part, Dai said China-France relations had developed smoothly on the whole since the two nations forged diplomatic ties45 years ago.     China has treasured its ties with France and is ready to work with France to ensure that bilateral ties will further develop on the right direction, he said.     He urged the two countries to handle their bilateral ties from a strategic and long-term perspective, work hard to create and maintain a favorable atmosphere and environment for the development of China-France relations, and ensure the steady and sound development of their bilateral ties on the right track, he said.     Dai left Beijing last Friday to visit Britain and France at the invitation of the two governments. He arrived in France on Tuesday.

STOCKHOLM, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- China's Geely Automobile on Wednesday have been confirmed as preferred bidder in the ongoing discussions concerning the possible sale of Volvo Car Corporation.     Ford said while it would be engaging in more detailed and focused negotiations with Geely, no final decisions have been made, reported the Swedish news agency TT.     Ford believes Geely has the potential to be a responsible future owner of Volvo and to take the business forward while preserving its core values and the independence of the Swedish brand. "We have no specific timeline to conclude the discussions," a statement of Ford was quoted as saying by TT.     It also pointed out that Ford would continue to cooperate with Volvo in several areas after a possible sale, Ford said it does not intend to retain a shareholding in Volvo.     "Ford's objective in our discussions with Geely is to secure an agreement that is in the best interests of all the parties," Lewis Booth, executive vice president and chief financial officer of Ford Motor Company, said in the statement.     "Any prospective sale would have to ensure that Volvo has the resources, including the capital investment, necessary to further strengthen the business and build its global franchise, while enabling Ford to continue to focus on and implement our core ONE Ford strategy," Booth added.     "Volvo's management team welcomes today's announcement as a positive step forward," Volvo CEO Stephen Odell said.     "At Volvo, we are continuing to keep our attention firmly fixed on engineering and building great Volvo cars, to reduce our cost base and to return the business to sustainable profitability at the earliest possible opportunity," he added. 

SHANGHAI, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- Visiting U.S. President Barack Obama said Monday that different countries should learn from each other to diversify cultures in the world.     "Each country in this interconnecting world has its own culture, its own history, and its own traditions," Obama said during a dialogue with Chinese students in the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum.     "It is very important for the United States not to assume what is good for us is automatically good for somebody else," he said when responding to a question raised by a Shanghai college student about how to promote cultural exchanges between different countries. QINGDAO, Shandong, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- The most severe icing situation in the past 30 years in the coast off east China's Shandong Province continued to worsen amid cold snaps, oceanic officials said Sunday.     Sea ice appeared last week along the coastline of the Bohai Sea and northern Yellow Sea as cold fronts pushed the temperature down to minus 10 degrees Celsius, said Guo Kecai, deputy general engineer of the North China Sea Branch (NCSB) of the State Oceanic Administration. Fishermen said the ice sheet could be20 cm to 30 cm thick.
