NEW YORK (AP) — Carl Reiner, the ingenious and versatile writer, actor and director who broke through as a “second banana” to Sid Caesar and rose to comedy’s front ranks as the creator of “The Dick Van Dyke Show” and straight man to Mel Brooks’ “2000 Year Old Man,” has died. He was 98.Reiner’s assistant Judy Nagy said he died Monday night of natural causes his home in Beverly Hills, California.He was one of show business’ best-liked men, the tall, bald Reiner was a welcome face on the small and silver screens, in Caesar’s 1950s troupe, as the snarling, toupee-wearing Alan Brady of “The Dick Van Dyke Show” and in such films as “The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming” and “It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World.”In recent years, he was part of the roguish gang in the “Ocean’s Eleven” movies starring George Clooney and appeared in documentaries including “Broadway: Beyond the Golden Age” and “If You’re Not in the Obit, Eat Breakfast.”Films he directed included “Oh, God!” starring George Burns and John Denver; “All of Me,” with Steve Martin and Lily Tomlin; and the 1970 comedy “Where’s Poppa?” He was especially proud of his books, including “Enter Laughing,” an autobiographical novel later adapted into a film and Broadway show; and “My Anecdotal Life,” a memoir published in 2003. He recounted his childhood and creative journey in the 2013 book, “I Remember Me.”But many remember Reiner for “The Dick Van Dyke Show,” one of the most popular television series of all time and a model of ensemble playing, physical comedy, and timeless, good-natured wit. NEW YORK CITY — A New York City mom allegedly threw her newborn son out of a bathroom window, District Attorney Melinda Katz said Tuesday. Sabina Dookram, 23, was charged with attempted murder, attempted manslaughter, assault and reckless endangerment.“This is a heartbreaking situation," Katz said. "A newborn baby has suffered greatly because of the alleged actions of his mother, who now faces serious charges and a lengthy prison sentence."A neighbor heard crying sounds on Sunday morning, officials said. When she went outside, she found a naked newborn boy on the ground next to the building's garbage. Responding officers found blood on the ground, on the side wall leading up to the bathroom window and on the window sill. The baby was taken to a local hospital in critical condition, Katz said. He was placed on a ventilator. Doctors determined he suffered a traumatic brain injury with bleeding and swelling about the brain and scalp and an abdominal injury with internal bleeding.Dookram gave birth on Saturday afternoon, prosecutors said she told officers."I cut the cord with a scissor from the bathroom," Dookram said according to court documents. "I panicked and threw it out of the bathroom window. I did not check on the baby, I put my clothes in the laundry hamper in the bathroom, I showered and went to sleep.”Dookram faces up to 25 years in prison if convicted. NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A federal judge says Louisiana must reinstate coronavirus pandemic voting plans used for summer elections rather than using a more restrictive plan approved by the Legislature. U.S. District Chief Judge Shelly Dick says the state must allow mail voting for people with conditions that make COVID-19 more dangerous, and their caretakers. She also ordered the expansion of early voting from seven days to 10 in November, but not in December. During his monthly call-in radio show, Gov.
