SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The County of San Diego released a 200-page report on Thursday that examines its handling of the recent Hepatitis A outbreak that infected almost 600 people and caused 20 deaths.The report details the county’s successes and what recommendations it has for the future. County officials have been criticized by some people who believe there was not enough action taken at the time.“The county seems to be more interested in its [own image] rather than solving problems,” prominent homeless advocate Michael McConnell told 10News by phone Thursday. He said that from what he knows, there’s little new information in the audit.RELATED: Health officials reminding San Diegans about hepatitis A shotMcConnell added it appears there’s little insight into what could’ve been done before the health concern became a full-blown epidemic.“It certainly appears there were many flaws in the reaction,” McConnell said.McConnell wrote a letter Thursday to state Assemblymember Todd Gloria, outlining a “disturbing timeline,” claiming county officials knew about the outbreak last March but didn't meet until May 4, "despite three deaths and 80 documented cases.”RELATED: Hepatitis A emergency officially ends in San Diego County A state of emergency was declared in September and it was lifted in January.Gloria recently asked for a state audit on the outbreak.In the county’s defense, the report says it acted at the start of the outbreak by providing vaccinations, promoting sanitation and educating community medical providers.RELATED: Audit questioning San Diego's response to hepatitis A outbreak requestedThe report does, however, acknowledge the needs for better coordination among leadership, more training and improving the county’s immunization registry system, among other recommendations.McConnell says, “I think for the most part [the county’s saying], ‘We did a great job. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Support for the Black Lives Matter movement is now visible on a downtown San Diego street.Over the weekend, various Black Lives Matter banners were put up on Broadway, between Third Avenue and Kettner Boulevard.The banners showcase the work of San Diego-based artist Anthony Tyson, and they display the message that Black lives of every age, gender, preference, past, and future matter.“You know, not that many people of my color, of my ethnicity is around this area. So, my people can come down and see it, and then also you have people that are used to this area seeing something different. And it gets them to ask the question of ‘what is this?’ and that's all you really need at the end of the day,” Tyson told ABC 10News.Tyson collaborated with the nonprofit Downtown San Diego Partnership for the project.“The Downtown Partnership believes strongly in its duty to ensure organizational efforts are promoting equality and addressing systemic injustice and racial discrimination wherever they exist. In addition to commitments made within the organization, the Downtown Partnership is working to foster a greater sense of cultural vibrancy through placemaking and special projects. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The elderly victim of a brutal home invasion in Clairemont last week is relieved two of the three suspects are in custody. John Slobig, 59 and Terry Jones, 53 are due in court Wednesday afternoon in connection with last Wednesday's home invasion in the 4600 block of Firestone Street.Eighty-seven-year-old Paul Schmidt suffered injuries to his head, arms, and wrist during the attack. "I was very grateful for the work that the police did, " said Schmidt. Schmidt said he's lived in the home for fifty-three years and never felt unsafe. "I know that drugs have been so dominant in our society lately that it's a whole different world that we're living in. Things we used to take for granted, you can't anymore," said Schmidt. Schmidt was installing a ceiling fan when he says three men burst through his front door."All of a sudden, these three guys come in and said this is a robbery and he grabbed scissors and walked up to me and said don't mess with us. I didn't want to die that day, and there was three. I'm one guy, I'm 87, I'm not as tough as I used to be," said Schmidt. He tried to pull one of the intruders by his beard, that's when Schmidt says one of the robbers hit him over the head with a ceiling fan blade."The one guy was higher than a kite; the one they have in custody, he was really a terrible person." Police say the trio ransacked the home and took off in the victim's truck, which was recovered. The suspects have lengthy criminal records. They're scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday at 1:30 pm. 1551

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The Filipino community in San Diego numbers around 200,000, second only to Latinos.This election the effort to get out the vote among that group has stepped up.Jo Ann Fields is among those getting out the word. She's been manning a phone bank nearly every day for the past few weeks. "It's important for us to get out the vote so we can grab the attention of our decision-makers and get things done," Fields said.Fields is the Government and Public Relations Director for the Asian Pacific Islander Initiative. The group does many things to support and advance its community, including civic engagement."We are the second largest ethnic group after Latinos we are the largest segment among Asian Pacific Islanders," says Fields.According to the San Diego County Registrar of Voters, more than 46,000 special language ballots have been requested in Filipino this year.Fields says there are several factors she thinks will encourage people to vote in record numbers, including having a Filipino candidate on the ballot, such as Todd Gloria, who is running for San Diego mayor."This is the first time someone from our community would be the leader of a city with 1 million-plus residents so that's really exciting," Fields said.The effort to get out the vote has been impacted by COVID-19, but the outreach is all done virtually this year."Phone banking is one way, text banking is another, virtual town hall like we will have Friday," Fields recalls.That town hall is designed to answer questions about how and when to vote.
