BEIJING, Sept. 7 (Xinhuanet) -- China will "vigorously" expand its imports of key products as the nation strives to cut its trade surplus amid growing protectionism against the world's largest exporter, a senior Chinese trade official said on Monday."We will especially encourage imports of products the nation is short of, especially advanced technology and key equipment," said Chong Quan, China's deputy international trade representative.Special attention will be paid to expanding imports from countries that China has a trade surplus with, he said at the China Import Forum organized by the Ministry of Commerce.Due to their domestic economic woes and political pressure, some developed countries, in particular the US, have accused China of piling up trade surpluses through policies such as an undervalued currency. This argument conveniently ignores other factors at play, such as their own export restrictions.Nonetheless, in the first six months of this year, US exports to China increased 35.7 percent year-on-year, 13 percentage points higher than its overall export growth, according to US figures.Despite the surge of its trade surplus in July, which stood at .7 billion, China will see the surplus drop dramatically for the year to about 0 billion, compared to 0 billion in 2009 and 0 billion in 2008, trade officials said. BAOSHAN, Yunnan, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from mudslides that hit a village in southwest China's Yunnan Province Wednesday has climbed to 24, while 24 others remained missing, officials at the rescue headquarters said Saturday.The mudslides occurred at about 10:20 p.m. Wednesday in a village of Longyang District in Baoshan City.Experts said the area is prone to landslides and it is recommended to permanently remove its population to safer areas, said Zhao Maoqi, vice head of Longyang District Government.Authorities will soon begin to select a site and work on a relocation plan. Local residents are expected to move into new houses early next year, said Zhao.Up to 40,000 cubic meters of debris came crashing down on the village, trapping 71 people from 21 families.An initial investigation blamed the tragedy on loose dirt and rocks sitting atop a steep slope that had been soaked by rain for about 10 days.

GUANGZHOU, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) -- Floods, landslides and heavy downpours brought by typhoon Fanapi had claimed 55 lives in south China's Guangdong Province, while another 42 were still missing, local authorities said Thursday.Meanwhile, more than 1.26 million people were affected and 98,000 in low-lying areas were forced to be evacuated, a spokesman with the provincial civil affairs department said.Rainstorms and and geological disasters had destroyed more than 4,200 homes and inundated more than 48,700 hectares of cropland, the spokesman said.Direct economic losses were estimated at more than 2 billion yuan (300 million U.S. dollars), he said.Tonnes of relief supplies, such as tents, clothes, quilts, bottled water and rice, have been dispatched to the disaster-hit areas.Helicopters were used Thursday to airdrop relief materials to victims.Typhoon Fanapi, the 11th and strongest typhoon that hit China this year, landed in Fujian Province at 7 a.m. Monday, but wreaked most havoc in Guangdong, which neighbors Fujian on the south.No casualties have been reported in Fujian.
