It’s official, summer 2020 was the hottest on record in the Northern Hemisphere.The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration released their monthly report on global temperatures. August 2020’s temperatures around the world made it the second-warmest August on record behind 2016, and the third-hottest season.Here in the Northern Hemisphere, August set a new record with a temperature departure from average of 2.14 degrees F, beating 2016’s numbers.“The most notable temperature departures from average were observed across Alaska, eastern Canada, the western contiguous U.S., Europe, northern Russia, central South America, Western Australia, eastern Antarctica, and across the North Pacific, the Bering Sea, and the Barents Sea, where temperatures were at least 2.0°C (3.6°F) above average,” NOAA scientists observed.The three-month season, June-August, surpassed the previous global record reached in both 2016 and 2019. This period is winter in the Southern Hemisphere, and they also had warmer weather than normal. Australia also had a drier than usual winter, 31 percent below average for precipitation.Globally, the ten hottest Augusts have all happened since 1998, and the five warmest have happened since 2015.Scientists believe 2020 will very likely rank in the top five warmest years on record.Also noted in the report, arctic sea ice continues to decline. The average Arctic sea ice coverage in August was the third smallest on record, about 29 percent below the 1981-2010 average. 1509

I wear a lot of jewelry that I know makes a woman feel really good; it makes her feel a little bit more bouncy," said, Lilly Ogle, who is a jewelry maker.The cash from her creations sold around the world helps pay the bills."I've sold pieces in Denmark, Finland, Germany—just all over," she said. "I use real stones; I use onyx, pearl, Mother of Pearl, jade, all kinds."Last year, she saved 5. That money was meant to buy Christmas gifts for her family."It took me a whole year to save that money," Ogle said. So she bought 5 in Amazon gift cards at her local Kroger store, and then this happened:"I got home 20 minutes later, tried to use those cards, and they said they have already been used—that's impossible. I just got them," Ogle recalled. She says Amazon told her they couldn't help because she did not order the cards directly from them.Though she had her receipts, Kroger said it could not help because gift cards are like cash. The cards "...cannot be replaced, and no refunds can be made."Kroger also said, "Cashiers have no way to know if the gift card belongs to the person presenting it or to someone else ... since the cards have no names on them and no ID is required for their use.""I'm not trying to get more than I paid for the cards. IRVINGTON, Indiana — An Indiana man has a warning for drivers who park anywhere Bird Scooters are known to be after he says he was left with hundreds of dollars in repairs after one of them blew over and damaged his vehicle. "It was a windy day. I think it was gusting 40 or 50 miles an hour that day," Matt Kawiecki said.The damage to Kawiecki's car was estimated at more than 0, but Bird tells him they're only willing to pay a fraction of that cost. "I offered to get multiple quotes, to see if this is a fair price — no response," said Kawiecki. He says the company was responsive when he first called to report the damage, but after he got the quote to fix the damage they stopped responding as much. "The quote came back at over 0. So I was a little surprised, just from a dent. Bird offered to pay 25 percent," Kawiecki said. He says it isn't even about the money, he's upset that the company won't take responsibility for the damage their scooter caused. "It's not about the money. I could care less about the money," Kawiecki said. "When they are not owning up to something as small and petty as 0 or 0 for a billion evaluated company, it's a little bit surprising."In the meantime, Kawiecki is urging other drivers to park away from scooters, so they don't have a similar incident. WRTV television station in Indianapolis reached out to Bird Scooters to ask them about the company's obligations to cover damage caused by unoperated scooters.
