SAN DIEGO (AP) — The sole suspect in a fatal shooting at a Southern California synagogue pleaded not guilty to federal hate crimes and other charges Tuesday.John T. Earnest entered the plea a week after a grand jury returned a 113-count indictment that largely mirrors a complaint filed shortly after his arrest on April 27. The indictment added four counts of using and carrying a firearm during commission of a violent crime.Earnest's parents attended the brief hearing but did not seem to exchange eye contact with their 19-year-old son. The suspect spoke only once, to acknowledge his name.Two days after the shooting, the family said their son's actions "were informed by people we do not know, and ideas we do not hold.""To our great shame, he is now part of the history of evil that has been perpetrated on Jewish people for centuries," they said in their only public statement since the shooting.Earnest looked blankly ahead as one of his attorneys argued that shackles should be removed from his wrists, ankles and waist during the hearing. Peter Ko, a prosecutor, countered, "He tried to commit mass murder," and the judge, Michael Berg, denied the defense request.Earnest also faces charges of murder and attempted murder for the attack on Chabad of Poway on the last day of Passover. One person died and three were injured.He is being represented by public defenders. His family is not paying his legal costs.Both federal and state crimes make him eligible for the death penalty if convicted but prosecutors have not said if they will seek it. 1563

San Diegans living in their cars and recreational vehicles rallied Wednesday against a new city law that places steep restrictions on where they can stay.The City Council passed the emergency restriction in May after residents complained about safety concerns with people living in their cars.The law bans people from living in their vehicles near homes or schools, and blocks them from staying almost everywhere in the city between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m."Homeless could by anybody, it doesn't mean we're criminals," said Robert Ewing, who lives in his R.V. "Just because we ain't got no place to stay. Times are hard."The law went into effect in June, about the same time the city opened a new safe parking lot for R.V's next to SDCCU Stadium in Mission Valley. The lot, however, has largely gone unused. People who live in their vehicles describe concerns over gas mileage, location and a rule requiring them to be out by 7 a.m.Meanwhile, Disability Rights California is challenging the ordinance in court. A spokeswoman for the mayor says the city is committed to providing individuals living out of their vehicles a safe place to park at night, while connecting them to supportive services.At the same time, she says the city is committed to keeping its neighborhoods clean and safe. 1291

Samuel and Ronan Peterson will have an interesting story to tell for the rest of their lives, thanks to Daylight Saving Time.The infant twins — born overnight on Nov. 6, 2016 — have a strange twist to their ages because of the time change.According to Cape Cod Healthcare in Massachusetts, Ronan is the older twin despite being born 31 minutes after Samuel.How does that work?According to hospital officials, Samuel was born at 1:39 a.m. Eastern and when his twin Ronan was born 31 minutes later, the clock had reset to 1:10 a.m., instead of being 2:10 a.m., because Daylight Saving Time had come to an end.So, despite technically being 31 minutes younger, Ronan's official time of birth is listed as 29 minutes earlier than Samuel's.One of the hospital's maternity nurses, who has 40 years on the job, said she'd never seen anything like it.Seth Peterson, the boys' father, figured something strange was going to happen due to his wife Emily giving birth on the night of Daylight Saving Time's end."I said earlier that night that they were either going to be born on two different days or the time change was going to come into play," he said, according to Cape Cod Healthcare.Clint Davis is a reporter for the Scripps National Desk. SAN BRUNO, Calif. (KGTV) - The San Bruno Police Department has identified the YouTube shooter as 39-year-old Nasim Najafi Aghdam. Aghdam reportedly drove to YouTube headquarters from San Diego, KRON reported Tuesday evening. Aghdam was a YouTube user who has a website with a manifesto that targets the platform for censorship and demonization of her content, according to ABC7. Law enforcement officials said Aghdam had previous addresses in San Diego and Riverside Counties and lived in a home in Menifee, Calif. with her parents. RELATED:  610
