ANTIOCH, Tennessee (WSMV) -- Exactly one week after a gunman opened fire on a Waffle House in Antioch killing four people and injuring others, community members gathered at the site to remember the victims. At exactly 3:20 this morning, people held a moment of silence, prayers and sang a song at Waffle House in honor of the victim's of last week's shooting. The group Partners in the Struggle organized the event at Waffle House this Sunday morning so that the community could gather in prayer as well as offer comfort and support to those affected by last week's shooting."What I would tell the families is [to] stay strong," said Earl Jordan of Partners in the Struggle. ARLINGTON, Va. – The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) says it screened more travelers on the day before Thanksgiving than any day since March 16, around the time the COVID-19 pandemic hit the U.S.TSA spokesperson Lisa Farbstein announced on Twitter Thursday that the administration screened 1,070,967 people at its checkpoints nationwide on Wednesday.“It's the highest volume since March 16 and only the 4th time passenger throughput has topped 1 million since that date,” wrote Farbstein.Still, air travel is significantly down, compared to in 2019. Last year, TSA says 2,602,631 people were screened on Thanksgiving eve. That’s more than double the amount screened this year.As coronavirus cases spike throughout the country, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is advising not to travel to visit loved ones this Thanksgiving. Officials want Americans to avoid spreading the coronavirus, especially to those most vulnerable, like the elderly.Instead, the CDC is suggesting that Americans should stay home and celebrate turkey day with the people they live with."Gatherings with family and friends who do not live with you can increase the chances of getting or spreading COVID-19 or the flu," the CDC says. 1245

Anyone who plans to travel internationally should get tested for COVID-19 before and after their trip, according to new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendations. In addition, the CDC says anyone returning from international travel should isolate for at least seven days — even if they test negative for COVID-19 upon their return.Planning aheadIn the new guidance published to its website, the CDC recommends travelers plan ahead several weeks before travel. The CDC says to avoid high-risk activities like large social gatherings (parties, weddings, funerals, sporting events), indoor recreation (bars, restaurants, fitness centers) and taking public transportation for at least two weeks. As the travel date approaches, the CDC recommends receiving a test between one and three days before boarding an international flight — but also to make sure test results are available before the flight departs. If the test results aren't back in time, the CDC recommends delaying travel. The CDC stresses that anyone who tests positive for COVID-19 should not travel — anyone who tests positive should immediately isolate and follow public health recommendations. The CDC also says that anyone who tests negative should still wear a mask, maintain 6 feet of social distance and wash hands frequently while traveling."A negative test does not mean that you were not exposed or that you will not develop COVID-19," the CDC says on its website. Finally, travelers should carry a copy of their test results with them — officials in other countries may ask to see them.Upon ReturnUpon return to the U.S., travelers should get another COVID-19 test within three to five days upon return. Even if that test comes back negative, the CDC urges a full week of self-isolation."You may have been exposed to COVID-19 on your travels. You may feel well and not have any symptoms, but you can be contagious without symptoms and spread the virus to others. You and your travel companions (including children) pose a risk to your family, friends, and community for 14 days after you were exposed to the virus," the CDC writes on its website.Anyone who chooses not to get tested upon their return to the U.S. should stay home for 14 days.Places where it's safe to travelThe CDC's website also includes risk assessment maps to help travelers determine where COVID-19 is spreading. As of Wednesday morning, nearly every country around the world was listed as a Level 4 risk — the highest level listed by the CDC.Click here to see the CDC's risk assessment map. 2559

As Democrats and Republicans battle over key swing states, some unexpected voting communities could play a significant role in the outcome. With Kamala Harris being the first-ever woman of Jamaican and Indian descent on a major party ticket, the South Asian community is mobilizing like never before.Young, professional, and politically savvy South Asian Americans, like Sabina Bokhari, are beginning to flex their electoral power.“This is a momentous election, as was the last one and so I have definitely upped my political engagement in all the ways that I can,” she said."The Republican Hindu Coalition" and "South Asians for Biden" are two groups driven by very different political ideologies that are presenting potentially strong voting blocks. Dr. Sumit Ganguly, a professor of political science at Indiana University, says they could play a key role in down ballot races.“It's a disproportionately affluent electorate. And it's an electorate that's growing. It could make a huge difference in Senate and House races,” said Ganguly.South Asian Americans have traditionally high voter turnout and have grown to become the second largest immigrant group in the U.S. They also tend to lean democratic.A post-2016 election survey indicates that 90% of Bangladeshi Americans, 88% of Pakistani Americans and 77% of Indian Americans voted for Hilary Clinton.President Trump has made a major play for the Indian vote. Last year, he held a large rally in Texas alongside Indian prime minister Narendra Modi and attracted a crowd of 50,000 Indian Americans. This week, "South Asians for Biden" launched a digital ad campaign series featuring celebrities encouraging South Asians to vote blue.“I know a lot of the aunties and uncles tend to be much more conservative and kind of lean Republican for sure,” said actor Sendhil Ramamurthy. “I think it's up to younger people, younger than myself, to try and change some minds.”Author and filmmaker Gotham Chopra along with his father Deepak, sister and his niece, a first-time voter, put out their own video stumping for Biden and Harris.“We all, three generations, feel very strongly about the stakes of this election and decided to participate in it,” said Chopra.Making inroads at the highest levels of government, Bokhari says means the power of the South Asian vote is being recognized and paving the way for future generations.“Young South Asians and young South Asian women who do want to occupy a role in our government one day it's important to have that representation,” said Bokhari. “So, we know that we can, and to be able to represent our communities to the best of our ability.” 2644
