WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S., Canada, and Mexico have agreed to keep their shared borders closed to non-essential traffic until at least late August because of COVID-19. Acting U.S. Department of Homeland Security Chad Wolf announced the agreement Thursday. He said restrictions on cross-border traffic that have been in place since March have helped slow the spread of the coronavirus. Canada Prime Minister also made the announcement during a news conference on Parliament Hill. The extension agreed to by the three countries would keep the border closed until Aug. 21. The partial closure restricts crossing to commercial traffic, people returning to their home country and other travel deemed essential. It prohibits people from traveling between the countries for tourism or shopping. 794
WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. officials say the Pentagon is developing plans to withdraw up to half of the 14,000 American troops serving in Afghanistan, marking a sharp change in the Trump administration's policy aimed at forcing the Taliban to the peace table after more than 17 years of war.One official says the troops could be out by summer, but no final decision has been made.President Donald Trump has long pressed to pull troops out of Afghanistan, but was persuaded by Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and others to keep them there to pressure the Taliban and battle a stubborn Islamic State insurgency.Officials say the latest White House push for withdrawal was another key factor in Mattis' decision to resign Thursday. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss internal deliberations. 809

WASHINGTON (AP) — Wasting no time, the Senate is on track to confirm Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court by next Monday.Republicans are charging toward a rare weekend session to push past procedural steps and install President Donald Trump’s pick before Election Day.Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said he will begin the process as soon as the Senate Judiciary Committee wraps up its work Thursday.Democrats decry the rush, but don't have the votes to block and Trump’s nominee is on a glide path to confirmation.Barrett's ascent would seal a 6-3 conservative hold on the court for years to come. 621
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Democratic-controlled House has approved a .5 trillion plan to rebuild the nation’s crumbling infrastructure. The measure would pour hundreds of billions of dollars into projects to fix roads and bridges, upgrade transit systems, expand interstate railways and dredge harbors, ports and channels. The bill also authorizes more than 0 billion to expand internet access for rural and low-income communities and billion to modernize the U.S. Postal Service. It now goes to the Republican-controlled Senate, where a much narrower bill approved by a key committee has languished for nearly a year. 628
We don’t agree with Speaker Pelosi that “nothing” is better than “something” for workers.Senators will vote on more relief next week, including more PPP money to stop layoffs. We’ll be able to pass it before we turn to Judge Barrett's nomination unless Democrats block it again. pic.twitter.com/paJFhx5HcI— Leader McConnell (@senatemajldr) October 13, 2020 374
