SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Mira Mesa mom she says her special needs son was bullied and robbed at his middle school during lunch.Diagnosed at birth with cerebral palsy, Justin Juanengo has surpassed many of the expected physical limitations, but remains unable to use his legs or his left arm. Michelle Juanengo and her husband adopted him at age 2."We've always been worried there would be other kids who would find him an easy target," she said.Last week her fears became a reality. At lunchtime on Wednesday at Wangenheim Middle School, she says a 7th grade classmate and several other students came up to Justin, 13, and started spinning his wheelchair and calling him names."He was nervous, scared. Didn't know where it was going to go from there. There are a lot of things that can go wrong if you're spinning a wheelchair. Were they going to roll him off somewhere?" said Michelle.Justin says it went on for minutes before his friend got the boys to stop. One of the boys then grabbed Justin's backpack and took off. According to his mother, Justin and a friend went to a classroom and found the ringleader, demanding and getting back the backpack. Inside, his wallet containing dollars was gone."Sad, feel terrible for Justin. I feel like he's had to tolerate enough with all his health limitations ... the ways he sees himself as different from other students. Why should he not have the right to go to school and feel safe?" said Michelle.Michelle says her son didn't have an aide with him, which is mandated by the state. She says she has recently learned the aide suffered a back injury last year and the substitute aide is sometimes not available."That's not good enough. He needs to have the aide. That could have prevented this," said Michelle.Another source of frustration? Justin says his bully is known for bullying and stealing from other kids, something Michelle believes should have been addressed earlier. Vice principal Miko Uhuru declined to talk about Justin's case citing privacy. He told 10News one of Justin's parents could sign a waiver, which Michelle says she didn't know about but now plans to sign."What I can says is we don't tolerate bullying. We investigate it and take is seriously," said Uhuru.Michelle says she was told the boy will be punished by the school, but wasn't given specifics. She says she and her husband are thinking about legal action against the school district to "make sure the same thing doesn't happen to other special needs students." 2499

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego company created technology for NASA's 2020 Mars rover, launching in July.The Perseverance is set to launch July 20, at 9:15 a.m. EST.NASA's been working on this project for more than a decade, drawing from past missions with hopes of finding evidence of past life on the red planet."It's a really exciting mission!" Mike Carpenter, VP of Engineering at KULR Technology said."We don't know for sure what they're going to find, but if they find any hard evidence of life that would be wonderful." Carpenter is thrilled to be a part of this mission, bringing a piece of San Diego to Mars.Carpenter said the company is known for it's technology that keeps batteries from exploding.For the rover, they created heat sinks that control the temperature around sensitive instruments. Specifically the heat sinks on Perseverance protect SHERLOC, a detector on the arm of the rover that looks for signs of past life.KULR sent similar tech to Mercury, but this is their first trip to Mars."It is the largest most sophisticated rover NASA has sent there," Carpenter said.According to NASA, Perseverance will be landing in the Jezero Crater, the site of an ancient river delta.The mission has four Science Goals:1. Determine whether life ever arose on Mars.2. Characterize the climate on Mars. (Seeking to find if an ancient climate could have supported life.)3. Characterize the geology of Mars.4. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A local hardware store is hoping to find the family of a mysterious model the store used for an ad when it first opened its doors in the late 1800s.The woman, known as the “Hardware Lady,” modeled hardware items on her dress for one of San Diego Hardware’s first advertisements 125 years ago.The company is hoping to identify the mystery model in time for their December 8 anniversary party. The store also hopes to honor the model and her family.The model’s dress was styled with keys, locks and chains and a small wood burning stove. The woman’s crown was made of spoons, clothespins and other hardware from the store.The store was founded in 1892 and now operates in Kearny Mesa and online. 721

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A man died early Saturday morning after he and another man held a punching game, police say.The incident happened on Fourth Avenue and J Street at Jolt’n Joe’s just before 1 a.m. Police say both men were drinking when they decided to have a punching contest.During the game, one of the men collapsed. Staff at the bar performed CPR on the 27-year-old who was taken to the hospital where he later died.The suspect in the death was taken also taken to the hospital after complaining of chest pain.Police haven’t officially made any arrests. 576

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A new report from the Auto Club ranks San Diego as the top travel destination for Southern Californians this Labor Day weekend.According to the report, Las Vegas, San Francisco, Grand Canyon and Santa Barbara also rank among top travel destinations for Southern Californians. The Auto Club is also warning San Diegans not to drink and drive. According to AAA, 31 people were injured in DUI-related crashes last year over Labor Day weekend.Statewide, eight people were killed in DUI crashes last year. “While alcohol-related crash fatalities have dropped in the last three years over this holiday, injuries have risen,” said Auto Club Traffic Safety Manager Anita Lorz Villagrana.“We want to remind everyone to make a plan before celebrating – use a rideshare service, stay at a hotel or someone’s home, or designate a sober driver.
