SAN DIEGO (CNS) -- San Diego City Council President Georgette Gomez said Monday she will propose extending the city's COVID-19-related eviction moratorium through next March.Gomez will ask for council support at Tuesday's scheduled council meeting to extend the deadline until March 31, according to a statement from her office. The city's current moratorium, which prohibits landlords from evicting renters and small businesses that are unable to cover their rent or lease payments due to financial hardship brought about by the pandemic, is slated to expire Sept. 30.Gomez says the pandemic's impacts have not yet declined enough to warrant lifting the moratorium this fall, particularly with 0 weekly federal unemployment benefits set to expire at the end of the month."When we passed the eviction moratorium in March, I hoped that six months would be enough for renters and small businesses to recover from the economic effects of COVID-19, or that our federal government would provide sufficient relief," Gomez said. "Unfortunately, the pandemic is not subsiding, unemployment remains high, many businesses are still struggling, and the federal government's response has been woefully inadequate. It is absolutely critical that we give San Diegans more time."San Diego's eviction moratorium has been extended twice since the beginning of the pandemic. The latest extension was approved last month by a 5-4 council vote. The city council has also approved .1 million in relief for renters, as well as nearly million in relief for small businesses. 1567

SAN DIEGO (CNS) -- San Diego Gas & Electric announced Monday that its residential customers will get a 5% reduction in pricing starting July 1 to help them deal with hot weather while spending more time at home during the COVID-19 pandemic. The new pricing for customers enrolled in the Time-of-Use DR1 pricing plan will last through Oct. 31 and applies to all three time-of-use periods: on- peak, off-peak and super off-peak, according to SDG&E.With the new pricing, a customer using an average of 400 kWh per month could see a bill decrease of about .80 per month, according to the company. For customers in the California Alternate Rates for Energy Program -- a bill discount program that offers a reduction of 30% or more on monthly bills -- an average usage of 400 kWh per month could see a bill decrease of about .96 per month with the new pricing. The California Public Utilities Commission recently approved the new pricing plan, which will also implement a 4% increase in pricing from Nov. 1 through May 31."Given the financial hardships the pandemic has caused, providing some bill relief to our customers as summer approaches was a priority for us, and we are appreciative that the CPUC agreed," said Dan Skopec, SDG&E's vice president of regulatory affairs. "We also encourage our customers to take advantage of the assistance and bill relief programs we have available."Two other energy bill payment assistance programs are available for customers who meet income eligibility criteria. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Police arrested a domestic violence suspect Friday morning after a standoff in La Mesa that temporarily blocked access to parts of Grossmont Center. The La Mesa and San Diego police departments responded to the situation at Grossmont Center Drive and Center Drive just before 8 a.m. Both streets were closed as officers worked to detain the suspect, La Mesa Police reported in a tweet. The situation started Thursday night when police received a call from the victim, saying she was choked by her ex-boyfriend at a residence on the 6800 block of Hyde Park Drive, San Diego police said.Police responded about 7:20 p.m. but the suspect already had fled in the girlfriend's car. Officers took a crime report and the victim was taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital in Kearny Mesa as a precautionary measure. The suspect returned to the residence this morning and the victim called the police again, according to SDPD. The suspect then drove to Grossmont Center, where police found him around 7:30 a.m. The suspect was arrested at 8:19 a.m. and taken into custody. The streets in the area were reopened around 8:30 a.m., SDPD said. 1145

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The city of San Diego announced Tuesday the completion of upgrades to 15 of the city's most accident-prone intersections. The improvements are part of the city's Vision Zero program, with a goal of eliminating fatal traffic accidents altogether by 2025 via infrastructure upgrades and traffic safety education. Circulate San Diego released a list last April of the city's 15 most dangerous intersections. Mayor Kevin Faulconer and Circulate San Diego Executive Director Colin Parent held a news conference at the last intersection to be fixed, 33rd Street and El Cajon Boulevard, to discuss the improvements, which include higher-visibility crosswalk designation and audible pedestrian signals and countdown timers. ``This is all about making it safer for everyone -- drivers, pedestrians and cyclists -- as they navigate city streets,'' Faulconer said.``Making crosswalks more visible and adding audible walk signals are just a few of the simple yet effective ways we can make our neighborhoods safer.'' Other intersections that underwent improvements include: - 10th Avenue and A Street- Fourth Avenue and B Street- Fifth Avenue and B Street- Euclid Avenue and Naranja Street- Fourth Avenue and University Avenue- Fourth Avenue and Market Street- Ash Street and Front Street- Coronado Avenue and Thermal Avenue- 33rd Street and El Cajon Boulevard- 52nd Street and University Avenue- 36th Street and El Cajon Boulevard- Sixth Avenue and Market Street- Fifth Avenue and Broadway- Sixth Avenue and Broadway- 11th Avenue and BroadwayFaulconer announced plans to fix more than 300 more accident-prone intersections during his ``State of the City'' address last month. According to Faulconer's office, Caltrans has awarded the city roughly .45 million for the improvements, which will start next year. City officials expect improvements to the first 50 intersections to be completed by the end of 2020. 1926

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego City Councilman Chris Cate will unveil 190 new parking spaces in the congested Convoy District in Kearny Mesa Tuesday before the City Council reviews that neighborhood's community plan."If you've been to the Convoy District, you know that finding a parking space can be extremely challenging," Cate said."My office has unwaveringly supported the small businesses in this hub for Asian cuisine and culture. To ensure this community project came to fruition, we spent countless days working side-by-side with business owners to ensure they were included in this process. Angled parking is the tip of the iceberg for the entire Kearny Mesa Community Plan process."Kearny Mesa was founded in 1937. Over the past eight decades, the commercially and industrially dense neighborhood has transformed into an iconic San Diego community, featuring the Convoy District, which recently formed a "Pan Asian Cultural District."Cate, in June of 2016, began the process of implementing angled parking in the Convoy District at the community's request. Two years later during his State of the District address, he announced the installation of 200 angled parking spaces would immediately begin.A total of 190 angled parking spaces have been added in the neighborhood, including 45 on Dagget Street, 80 on Vickers Street and 65 on Opportunity Road. The existing community plan for Kearny Mesa has not been updated since 1992. For the past two years, the San Diego's Planning Department has led the Kearny Mesa Community Plan update to determine how Kearny Mesa will develop in the future. The City Council will consider updating the plan at its Tuesday meeting. 1678
