SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Nearly 300 goats are munching away at brush on and around Cuyamaca College.The college contracted with Environmental Land Management and its goats to help with fire mitigation.A preserve surrounds the 165-acre campus. The goats and ELM staff and machinery will clear about 50 acres of brush in six to eight weeks. The goats are estimated to do 65 percent of the clearing work.Julianna Barnes, the President of Cuyamaca College, says the goats are a way to be pro-active during the fire season.“Usually we bring out an all-human crew with heavy machinery,” Barnes said, “but it’s actually 20 percent the cost of bringing in an all-human crew. And it’s more environmentally sound.”The goats will eat 7- to 10-percent of their body weight. Also, goats do not re-seed plant life in their excrement, according to the college.“We have a lot of non-native plants, and they’re highly flammable,” Barnes said, “(The goats) love to eat, and they love these non- native plants.” 994

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Owners of sportfishing and diving charters in San Diego expressed their grief and condolences Monday after learning of the deadly boat fire near Santa Cruz Island. John Conniff, the owner of Islander Charters, was at sea guiding a trip when he heard chatter over the radio. "It was in the middle of the night, and I could actually hear it from where I was sleeping, but we could only hear the Coast Guard side of things, at first I heard that there was a fire on a boat," said Conniff. "We couldn't hear the Conception side of the story, but I could hear Coast Guard responding to a serious mayday outside of Santa Barbara."It wasn't until Conniff returned to San Diego that he learned just how devastating the fire was. "My heart goes out to them… my first thought when I heard it on the radio was my own family and then of the families of the 25 people sleeping below decks on our boat," said Conniff. Coniff runs sportfishing and dive trips anywhere from one-and-a-half to five days. He says the whole industry is grieving. Patrick Douglas, with Horizon Charters, posted this message on their Facebook page. "Like many of you in the California dive community we woke up to the devastating news of the Truth Aquatics dive boat fire off Santa Cruz Island last night. Sending our deepest condolences and love out to the families impacted, this is a very sad day for the industry. #prayers"By phone, Douglas told 10News that dive boats in California operate at a higher level than any other state. He says they maintain the highest standards and an incident like this is an anomaly. In his 30 years of experience, Douglas has never seen an incident so severe. Both Douglas and Conniff acknowledge incidents like this are a reminder to double down on safety operations. Officers arrived to find a victim in an alley suffering from a gunshot wound, according to City News Service.The victim, described only as a male, was pronounced dead at the scene.The suspected shooter was described as a man who appeared in his 30s, wearing shots and a black tank top. He seen fleeing the area with another person in a silver Dodge Ram pickup or similar truck, CNS reported.SDPD is investigating. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Photos captured along the shores of San Diego show the return of a bioluminescent glow cause by a phenomenon known as the red tide. Pictures posted on social media show the eerie neon glow. According to several San Diego photographers who captured the phenomenon, the bioluminescence was captured along the shores of La Jolla and Torrey Pines State Beach Wednesday night. The glow is created by an algae bloom called the red tide. The algae bloom is filled with phytoplankton called "dinoflagellates.” The organisms react with bioluminescence when jostled by the moving water. "Where the wave crashes onto the shore, as it rolls over that’s where the turbulence is highest," said Clarissa Anderson at The Scripps Instutition of Oceanography. "That’s why those are really bright stripes of light. We don’t know the exact smoking gun yet. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — More than 200 people in San Diego County are currently being monitored over novel coronavirus concerns, county health officials said Friday.The 204 people under county supervision include those deemed at risk of having been exposed to the virus due to close contact with confirmed cases or because of travel to China in the past 14 days, the county said.Those individuals are monitoring their health under the supervision of county health officials.RELATED: San Diego Board of Supervisors extends coronavirus emergenciesSo far, 338 people in all have been monitored by the county, with 134 people completing their time under supervision.Health officials say the CDC is conducting screening for those landing at one of 11 U.S. airports from China. From there, if a patient shows no symptoms they are self-quarantined at home for self-monitoring with public health supervision. San Diego has had two confirmed cases of coronavirus, or COVID-19. One patient has since recovered from the virus and been released. The second patient was still receiving care.
