BEIJING, March 24 (Xinhua) -- China and Uruguay voiced commitment to further develop cooperation on trade and investment and boost exchanges between the parliaments of the two countries.     When conferring with the visiting Uruguayan President Tabare Vazquez here Tuesday, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao called on the two nations to exert joint efforts to address the challenges posed by the current global financial crisis.     China and Uruguay should take effective measures to achieve a diversified and balanced two-way trade structure and expand mutual investment to raise bilateral economic and trade cooperation to a higher level, Wen said.     The Chinese Premier also pledged that China would intensify the dialogue and communication with the Common Market of the South and join hands with Uruguay and other countries to develop the Latin American market for mutual benefit. BEIJING, March 30 (Xinhua) -- Aluminum Corporation of China Ltd. (Chalco), reported a 99.9 percent plunge in full-year net profit to 9.2 million yuan (1.35 million U.S. dollars) in 2008, due to product price fluctuations on the international market, the company's annual report revealed Monday.     "The company suffered major losses from the snowstorm at the beginning of last year, and the earthquake disaster," said the statement.     The shock from the financial crisis, rises in raw material prices and consecutive plunges of finished product prices had posted "unprecedented difficulties and challenges" for the company, said the statement.     Chalco's business turnover reached 76.73 billion yuan, down 9.94 percent from last year, largely because of a decline in product prices, said a statement submitted to the Shanghai Stock Exchange.     The price of alumina, a major type of aluminum product, which at one point reached 4,500 yuan per tonne in the domestic market in 2008, dropped to 1,900 yuan per tonne as demand shrank drastically because of the financial crisis, said the statement.     Board chairman Luo Jianchuan said the company should actively cope with the problem, which would persist in 2009. Measures should be taken to cut cost, control investment, and maintain stable production.     Though estimated to suffer losses in the first quarter this year, Chalco was confident it would "get over the difficulties and have a bright prospect," said Luo.     Share prices of Chalco on Shanghai Stock Exchange plunged more than 4 percent to 10.46 yuan Monday morning.     Aluminum Corporation of China (Chinalco), Chalco's parent company, had obtained support from four Chinese banks, including the Bank of China (BOC), to finance its bid for the world's third largest miner Rio Tinto.     They have signed agreements to provide 21 billion U.S. dollars worth of syndicated loans to support the bid.

MEDELLIN, Colombia, March 29 (Xinhua) -- China's membership in the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) will broaden cooperation between China and Latin America, China's central bank governor Zhou Xiaochuan said here Saturday.     Closer bilateral cooperation will enhance their ability to jointly tackle the ongoing financial crisis, Zhou told an IDB meeting in Medellin. Zhou is here for the 50th annual meeting of the IDB, scheduled for March 27-31 in the Colombian city of Medellin.     The IDB group, founded in 1959 and headquartered in Washington D.C., is the oldest and largest regional inter-governmental development financial institution. It is aimed to promote economic and social development in Latin America and the Caribbean.

BEIJING, March 7 (Xinhua) -- Another Chinese delegation of businesses and industry leaders, led by the Ministry of Commerce (MOC), left for four European countries Saturday for investment and economic cooperation, the MOC said.     The business delegation, following purchases totaled more than 10 billion U.S. dollars in Europe by a Chinese procurement delegation in late February, are heading for the same destinations of Germany, Switzerland, Spain and Britain.     The new delegation will explore investment opportunities on areas of automobile, machinery, textile, food, electronics and technologies relating to energy saving and environment protection.     An MOC official said "the move would further strengthen cooperation between Chin and Europe and create a win-win result in tackling the global economic downturn."     The delegation are composed of more than 20 top Chinese companies, as well as several national trade associations and government officials.
