Racial disparities and bias in health care can be a double whammy for multi-generational families of color — specifically when Black men are the caregivers."We tend to think of the male caregiver as that individual that comes helicoptering in and pays the bills or take care of yard work. But that's not all that male family caregivers do," said Rita Choula, the director of caregiving at the AARP Public Policy Institute.AARP has found that there are nearly 3 million African-American men taking care of an adult family member or non-relative — usually someone with memory, emotional or mental health conditions.Conversations with those caregivers reveal the unique challenges and stereotypes they face, including health care bias."If he is going into a situation with an understanding that there may be a bias — when we talk about higher levels of stress, that would be one thing that could cause more stress for an African American male caregiver," Choula said.Black men are also less likely to ask for help, which can add to the stress. They're often still working essential jobs and facing financial impacts due to tough choices about balancing careers with their caregiving responsibilities.That stress has been amplified by the COVID-19 pandemic, as caregivers now face the risk of bringing the virus home to loved ones.But these Black men are dedicated. A majority of all African-American caregivers find a sense of purpose or meaning in that role — more so than other caregivers."Increasingly, male family caregivers are bathing their mothers. That's a difficult thing," Choula said. Recorded by another driver Wednesday afternoon, a video shows two vehicles - a car and a minivan - heading down Kanner Highway in Stuart, Florida.We don't see what leads up to it, but the car appears to be driving slowly in front of the minivan - even jumping in front of the van when the driver tries to change lanes.The two cars get to the intersection of US 1 and Kanner.Almost immediately, three men get out and brawl in the middle of the busy road."Bystanders were involved trying to break them up, and the potential of those bystanders also getting hurt during this is increased," says Jeff Kittredge with the Stuart Police Department.Kittredge says the men in the car, Eric Gerstmann and Sean Gerstmann of Port Saint Lucie, drove away at the end the fight but were arrested just down the road."Not only are you putting yourself in danger, but you're also putting other motorists in danger with aggressive driving," he says. For many folks, it shows we still have a long way to go."A lot of people are fueled off of hate and anger, and not love and passion," says resident Victor Diodato."It just shows how little respect we have for each other," says resident Joseph Neuroth. RAMONA, Calif. (KGTV) — Ramona Unified School District is alerting parents of what they called a "suspicious" incident at a local elementary school Friday.In a letter home to families, Barnett Elementary School Principal Linda Marthis said a kindergarten student reported the incident took place at the campus' upper playground in front of the school.Marthis did not elaborate on the incident. San Diego Sheriff's deputies arrived and were unable to find evidence to support the student's claims.Out of an abundance of caution, supervisory staff will be "heightened" while students are on the playground and all K classes would have recess on the kindergarten. 668
