SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It's a nervewracking place: on stage, behind the mic, looking out at a sea of people waiting for your punch line.The Comedy Palace in Kearny Mesa sees many comedians but not like the one who performed Friday night."It was something I thought about even in college but lacked the courage to do it," said Michael Schmid. "I always loved to make people laugh."Schmid always had the passion, but it was a recent visit to the doctor that gave him the courage he had been lacking."If not now, when," Schmid said.Three years ago, he was diagnosed with primary lateral sclerosis, a condition similar to ALS."It had spread to my upper body and becoming more quadriplegic," Schmid said.One month ago, he made the toughest decision of his life."The most difficult thing I ever had to do in my life was to talk to my children about ending my life."Schmid says he will end his life on December 27, citing severe pain. He shared the date with one of his favorite comedians, along with a dream and a request for help."My initial response was 'We're going to make this happen,'" said Lisa Alvarado.Alvarado talked with some friends in the industry to see if they'd help make Schmid's dream of performing come true."I'm talking comics with Netflix specials, Comedy Central specials," Alvarado said.In one month, the group developed a 15-minute standup comedy routine for Schmid to deliver Friday night. Many of the professional comedians were in the audience as Schmid performed in his wheelchair with Alvarado holding his microphone.After the performance, Schmid's father made his way to the stage to give his son a hug."I never expected him to do that and show the world we're close," said Schmid.Schmid's ex-wife and his four children were also in the audience."No matter how crappy of a hand he's been dealt, he's taken it with a joke," said Schmid's son Joshua.Schmid is grateful he had a chance to laugh."I want my friends and family to have at least that memory when I'm gone," Schmid said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Less than a week before the election, there are reports of political yard signs being stolen and vandalized, and in some cases, appearing in yards.Sunday night, just before midnight in a cul-de-sac in El Cajon, surveillance video shows a car driving slowly before it stops to let someone out."A shadowy figure, looks young, maybe 10 years old, gets out of the vehicle, runs in, and grabs a political sign," said Brandon Spaulding.Spaulding says the sign being taken belonged to his neighbor and it read "Trump/Pence, Make America Great Again." That same night, Spaulding's sign, which had been vandalized days before, also disappeared.The apparent thieves in the Sunday's thefts: a child and an adult."Very disappointed and frustrated ... being a terrible role model. As parents, you’re supposed to teach children the different between right and wrong. I was always taught to love my country, and part of that is freedom of speech. Respect people's rights to say what they want to say," said Spaulding.Spaulding isn't alone. Local Republican Party officials say they've received more than a 100 reports of stolen Trump signs, a greater number when compared to previous presidential elections.In Coronado, police responded Wednesday to seven homes, where yard signs reading "Racism Lives Here" appeared in front of the homes of Trump supporters who were displaying signs or flags.It isn't just Trump backers being targeted. On the Nextdoor mobile app, ABC 10News found numerous examples of signs supporting presidential challenger Joe Biden stolen.Just south of Balboa Ave., Margo Thomas woke up Wednesday to her Biden/Harris yard sign gone."To me, it just feels like you’re stifling free speech," said Thomas.There is still no mistaking who Thomas is backing. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Local groups including the Local Initiatives Support Corporation, are pushing for the City of San Diego to draft up and pass an ordinance that excludes certain zoning policies. "We're not asking to spend billions of dollars and build something, we're saying change the zoning. They have the prerogative, it's under their jurisdiction, we're reminding them there are issues at stake and those issues are communities to this day that are segregated," said Ricardo Flores, executive director of LISC.Flores says the same areas that were identified back in 1930 by San Diego banks as low-income areas are still falling under that category today. Additionally, areas outside of those remain zoned for single-family homes, keeping the lower income families from moving in. "So, what we’re effectively saying is, if you can't buy a single-family home in Kensington, then you can't live in Kensington. But, that’s not the truth; the truth is Kensington is zoned one thing, single family, and we need to expand that zoning." A representative at the rally from Chicano Federation says, "We are tired of the continuation of policies masked as zoning when in reality they are policies of segregation." Meantime, Borre Winkle, CEO and president of the Building Industry Association of San Diego told 10News, "The American dream is not to live in an apartment, the American dream is still to live in a single-family dwelling unit no matter how big it is".Winkle says getting rid of single family zoning isn't the solution. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It’s the largest loss of life in United States Navy history and you can read an award-winning account of it by two San Diego authors. ‘Indianapolis: The True Story of the Worst Sea Disaster in U.S. Naval History and the Fifty-Year Fight to Exonerate an Innocent Man’ is being released as a paperback after the hardcover became a New York Times bestseller. Sara Vladic and Lynn Vincent wrote the book together after researching it for more than 17 years. “It’s so much more than a sinking story and a shark story,” said author Lynn Vincent. Vladic spent nearly two decades interviewing survivors from the sinking USS Indianapolis. “Getting to know these men and their story and heroism and what it took to survive those days is incredible,” added Vladic, “it still teaches us lessons today of what the cost of freedom really is and what we should be remembering.” The book is cinematically written and presents multiple accounts from the men that had to fend off sharks and each other for several days at sea after the heavy cruiser was sank by the Japanese during WWII. The authors say they are in talks with several streaming services to make a miniseries based on the book. 1202

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Kevin Luo of Pacific Trails Middle School has been crowned the winner of the 2018 countywide spelling bee. The event began at 9 a.m. at the McMillin Companies Event Center at Liberty Station and lasted for nearly four hours. Last year’s local winner was Pacific Trails Middle School student Yash Hande. Yash advanced to the 90th annual Scripps National Spelling Bee.
