SAN DIEGO (KGTV)— The San Diego Police Department's Eastern Division opened up their “Trunk or Treat Haunted Station” to more than 500 kids the Skyline neighborhood. Officers and community members helped to transform the station, and students from Morse High School played monsters in the haunted house. The tradition began four years ago, with the goal of connecting the community with law enforcement.  “It’s so safe. It’s so fun. The kids are having a blast,” one woman said, as her cousin played with the police equipment on display.Outside the station, sponsors gave out candy and snow cones. Officers allowed Trick-Or-Treaters to tour the inside of a SWAT vehicle and ride a police motorcycle. “When I was a child, we didn’t have a place like this to come to,” one woman said, as her grandchildren played inside the SWAT vehicle. “As I was growing up, they would say 'Don’t eat the candy. Things are unsafe.' But we’re so glad to be here because we know our kids are safe here.”Residents said this was exactly what the community needed-- An experience that not only keeps the streets safe, but builds good relationships between residents and law enforcement. “A lot of the kids said, 'I want to be a police officer when I grow up.' And that’s what we want. We want kids from this neighborhood to get interested in becoming a police officer,” Lt. Ernesto Servin of SDPD said.  1414

SAN DIEGO — A YouTube video shows a community college police officer drawing his gun on a San Diego man carrying a camera Wednesday.The video shows the Mesa College police officer getting out of his car and asking Chris, the man with two cameras, what he was filming.Chris, who did not want to provide his last name, refused to put down the GoPro camera. Within seconds, the officer took his weapon out of the holster. The officer did not put his gun back in the holster until a second officer arrived.Chris is the founder of California Citizens Watch, a group that audits government entities. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - As restaurants learn to adapt and overcome in the era of new closures and regulations, not all are able to make it over the hurdle. Multiple San Diego staples have announced permanent closures, including The Balboa in Bankers Hill and Cafe on Park near Hillcrest.Andy Haenfler said he opened Cafe on Park 25 years ago and has devoted his life to this business.“I opened Thanksgiving weekend in 1995 to a line down the block and thought 'oh my goodness what have I done,'” said Haenfler.He said this past March, they closed their doors, thinking it was temporary, but they were never able to open them again.“We had just gotten a shipment of ,000 worth of product in so we gave it to the staff, the staff took it home and gave it away to their neighbors,” he said.Haenfler said he had hoped to stay open a few more years then retire and sell his restaurant to employees, but that goal is no longer possible. His message to the community now is to support local businesses so this doesn’t happen again.“It’s us little one-owner, one-shop places that the community really need to support,” he said.Nearby restaurant The Balboa has a similar fate. Owner Tom Logsdon said the business started years ago with him cooking at home then it grew into what it is known for now: a community spot with good burgers. “The type of business we had is really built around dining in, it’s built around community coming together,” said Logsdon.He said he did try to reopen, but the takeout burgers weren’t able to save the business the way regular customers who sit and have multiple drinks would.“Without people hanging out and having some drinks, it just wasn’t working,” he said.Logsdon said he’s permanently closing his Bankers Hill location but has a second location in Chula Vista, so he’ll be consolidating the business and focusing his effort on the one spot.“I’ve spent about a third of my life in that building. I’ve got a big attachment to the neighborhood and the community there but after three months of just losing money like crazy, the reality was we just couldn’t keep that going,” said Logsdon.Both Logsdon and Haenfler said this is the necessary decision right now, but once the industry recovers, they hope to reopen more restaurants and continue with their careers. 2304

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- San Diego State University held an inauguration for their new president. Dr. Adela de la Torre is the ninth president for SDSU but the first female president. She was appointed in 2018. During her speech she said, “I know I stand here as first woman to serve as permanent president to lead this university, but I recognize that I stand on the shoulders of women who have shaped the identity of SDSU from the very beginning”. Looking at the coming years, she says there is critical work that needs to be done. Further, she explains her support for SDSU West and her plans to expand SDSU Imperial Valley, “we will continue to capitalize on its untapped potential,” she says. 699

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Apple is paying Intel billion for the chip maker's smartphone modem division in a deal driven by the upcoming transition to the next generation of wireless technology.The agreement announced Thursday comes three months after Apple ended a long-running dispute with one of Intel's rivals, Qualcomm. That ensured Apple would have a pipeline of chips it needs for future iPhones to work on ultrafast wireless networks known as 5G.The Apple-Qualcomm truce prompted Intel to abandon its attempts to make chips for 5G modems, effectively putting that part of its business up for grabs.Once the sale is completed later this year Apple will be picking up about 2,200 Intel employees and 17,000 wireless technology patents. Barring any complications, the deal is expected to close sometime between October and December.Apple's purchase of Intel's smartphone modem patents and other technology could bolster its attempt to build its own line 5G chips and lessen its dependence on Qualcomm. The Cupertino, California, has hammered out a licensing agreement with Qualcomm that carries through April 2025, with an option to extend for an additional two years after that.Qualcomm is a pivotal supplier in the rollout of 5G, particularly in the U.S. That's because President Donald Trump's administration has blacklisted another key 5G supplier, Huawei, as part of its trade war with China.So far, 5G connections are only available in a few cities in the U.S., but they are expected to become more prevalent by next year. The faster networks will enable consumers with 5G devices to download movies in a matter of seconds and access other streaming services more quickly.Apple isn't expected to release an iPhone that works on 5G networks until September 2020, putting it behind rivals such as Huawei and Samsung, which already make handsets that work with the faster wireless technology.The sale is a residue of Intel's inability to catch up with Qualcomm in the business of making chips for smartphone modems.
