LAS VEGAS, Nevada — More changes could be coming to the "free drink" system in Las Vegas casinos.There is special technology on table-top machines, such as video poker, that monitors when you earn a comped drink. Now, gamblers may see it on slot machines, too.Ardent Progressive Systems and Games has already installed its technology on about 90 slot machines at The Riverside Resort in Laughlin.It's considered a trial run for a couple months to see how it goes."The hope now is, the trial down in Laughlin will be successful and then we've got several properties that are waiting to see the results of that and possibly implementing it in the near future up here in Las Vegas," said Albert Tabola with Ardent Progressive Systems and Games.The technology is a strip of LED lights that faces you while you play. Red means you're not ready for a drink. Green means you are ready for a drink. Yellow means you're getting close to qualifying for a drink. Orange means you're playing too slowly and falling off track."You will know as you play whether you qualify for a complimentary drink or not, as will the cocktail waitress," Tabola said.Players do not have to play max bet to qualify for a drink. They ust need to consistently play."The qualification levels on there are very, very low so this should not affect anybody that plays for the most part, at all," he said. "Ideally, the only person that will be grumbling about this will be the person that wants to get that free drink before they go into a show by just sitting down at the machine and maybe playing a penny or wherever they can get away with."Casinos in Las Vegas will be keeping an eye on the trial run in Laughlin right now before making a decision as to whether they should implement it on slot machines here in the city. 1811

Lisa Kendall and Doug Spainhower have spent years, along with their neighbors, working to make their neighborhood more safe from wildfires.“The less burnable material that you have, then the more likely your house is to survive a wildfire," said Kendall.They’ve been clearing the area around their entire neighborhood in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, which has one road in and out and is surrounded by forests, with dead trees, downed trees and debris.“You have this home, you paid money for it, it only costs a little bit more to do this defensible space work to give these firefighters a chance to be able to defend your home,” she said.“I’ve been right in the middle of forest fires, so it scares the hell out of me,” Doug Spainhower said. He grew up in Northern California, another hot spot for wildfires.“It’s important that everybody is on board because if only half of the residents buy into it, then the other half doesn't, well if their house catches on fire and you’re next door, your house is going to burn down too. There’s no two ways about it,” Spainhower said.“Recognize it can happen to you,” Kendall said. “Even all this preparation and all this work we’ve done over the years, it’s not a guarantee.”2020 has been one of the worst wildfire seasons on record in the western U.S., from winery-scorching blazes in Northern California to 100,000 acres burned in 24 hours by the East Troublesome Fire in Colorado, to fires biting at backyards in Southern California. One that can withstand a fire. We’re not there yet,” Lipsher said. “But I think we have made some truly innovative strides.”An example lies just north of Downtown Frisco, where Summit Fire & EMS is located. Lipsher said they completed a controversial clear cut around a neighborhood as a precaution, but that cut played a part in saving those homes from the Buffalo Mountain Fire in 2018.“It was a human-caused fire,” Lipsher said. The fire burned up to just a football throw from nearby homes. “When this fire started here, [the clear cut] was the saving grace for this neighborhood,” he said.Scorched trees are still standing today.“We’re seeing some unprecedented fire behavior and some really extreme fire behavior that, as a forester and a firefighter, we just haven't really seen in our lifetime managing these forests,” said Ashley Garrison, a Forester with the Colorado State Forest Service. “The effect these wildfires can have on the environment can really have these cascading event when they are these intense, large fires.”Garrison and Lipsher are just two of the men and women who spend their days working on wildfire mitigation, something Summit County has been focused on for more than a decade.“It’s been 15 years now since Summit County developed one of the first community wildfire protection plans,” Lipsher explained. “It was one of the first developed in the state and in the country.”As for making a community fireproof, that may be unachievable. “Quite frankly I think that will probably be a never ending quest,” he said. “Our existential threat here is wildfire. It's no different if you lived in Kansas with the threat of tornadoes, or if you lived in Miami and it’s the threat of hurricanes.” 3981

LAKE ALFRED, Fla. -- A Polk County, Florida family is outraged after they say their 7-year-old was forced to scrub school floors with a toothbrush as punishment.The elementary student reportedly misbehaved last week at Lake Alfred Elementary, when her teacher sent the student next door for "corrective action."According to the family, the 7-year-old was told to scrub the floors with a toothbrush.They also claim teachers told her to clean the entire floor, and when she was done she was told to then clean the counters.Family members say she was forced to do this throughout the day and was not able to participate in regular classroom activities. The family says they were not made aware of the misbehavior or the punishment their daughter received. LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) — This week, police say they arrested a La Mesa businessman, who was the subject of an inappropriate video posted online earlier this year, for violating a restraining order.La Mesa Police said Peter Carzis was arrested Tuesday and charged with violation of a domestic violence restraining order. Officers responded to the 8200 block of Lemon Avenue at about 6:30 p.m. for a report of a possible restraining order violation. Carzis was contacted by officers outside of an apartment complex.As part of an active restraining order, Carzis is ordered to stay 100 yards away from the protected party's address, police said. Officers found Carzis sitting outside of the residence.Last January, Carzis was captured on video allegedly committing a lewd act with a woman on the sidewalk outside his clothing store, Peter's Men's apparel on La Mesa Boulevard. The video was posted on a Facebook community page.When news crews returned to the area to speak with Carzis, he allegedly attacked news reporters and photographers who were attempting to interview him outside his business.Carzis has pleaded not guilty to felony vandalism charges and misdemeanor counts of battery and committing a lewd act in public. 1232
