SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The city updated the Sherman Heights community and surrounding neighborhoods Wednesday evening, about the transitional homeless storage facility that's set to open.  The facility is scheduled to open at the corner of the Commerical and 20th Streets on June 13.  It's been a controversial project from the beginning. The storage facility will hold 500 units for homeless people to store their things while they look for work and get back on their feet.  RELATED:  514

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The mother of Rebecca Zahau testified Thursday in the second day of the civil lawsuit surrounding the Coronado mansion death.Rebecca Zahau died in July 2011. Her nude, bound body was found hanging from the balcony of the Spreckels mansion.The death was officially declared a suicide but Zahau's family disagreed. They filed a wrongful death civil lawsuit against Adam Shacknai, the brother of Zahau's boyfriend.Shacknai’s lawyers argue there is no physical, eyewitness, or scientific evidence linking him to Zahau’s death.Zahau's mother, Pari Zahau, took the witness stand Thursday morning and gave an emotional testimony as she was asked questions about her daughter.She remembered her as a sweet, loving and religious woman. The jury has three days off and will hear testimony again Monday.The family’s attorney Keith Greer handed Pari Zahau a piece of evidence and asked her to describe what it was.It was an envelope full of cash from Rebecca Zahau addressed to Pari Zahau and her late husband.Pari Zahau explained to the jury her daughter would support her financially by sending cash every month. That envelope was never sent, although one of the final times Pari Zahau talked to her daughter, she was told it would be on the way soon.Pari Zahau had to take a break from testifying when lawyer Keith Greer asked, “Did you ever think Rebecca would kill herself?”She gave a tearful response saying, “No. No, never. Never. My daughter? No. She is very sweet girl and she is very strong. No no, not suicide, they killed her.”After Pari Zahau broke down in tears, the lawyer asked for a brief break.The trial is expected to last a month. The Zahau’s family’s goal is to get the Sheriff’s Department to reopen a criminal investigation. 1802

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The dockless bike industry continues to thrive in San Diego despite concerns from locals.The latest hazard being reported is brake cables being cut. Reddit user Kyle Clark spotted it in Ocean Beach on a Lime Bike. Another Reddit user reported the same problem in a different thread.Dockless bike company Ofo says they aren't aware of this happening to their bikes in San Diego but say they've seen the problem in Seattle. 449

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The Last Real Gym on North Park’s University Avenue took to the streets immediately after it became illegal to operate indoors in mid-July.The whole experiment lasted five days.“The sidewalks are pretty dirty between dog poop, dog pee … and human poop from the homeless sleeping on my side of the building,” owner Frank Kole said Friday.Kole decided to move everything back indoors in defiance of the Gov. Newsom’s July 13 health order meant to slow the spread of the coronavirus.RELATED: Former member of The Gym in Pacific Beach shares experience“Indoors I'm able to bleach, sanitize, wipe after every single use on the equipment that a member uses, and there's not a homeless person or a dog coming by to pee on it in between that,” Kole said.Kole said he's taking serious measures to keep people safe indoors, with hand sanitizing stations, plexiglass barriers, directional walking signs, and instructions to wipe down equipment.And also, no mask, no access.“I'm not going to lie, I'm not being nice about it,” Kole said. “If you're not wearing your mask, get out. Since that time, county officials identified a different gym that defied the order, called The Gym in Pacific Beach, as the site of an outbreak.Kole expressed confidence in his safety measures. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The convention center expansion initiative will not make the November ballot even though San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer gave it his best shot.Faulconer's ballot measure proposal to fund the convention center expansion, get homeless people off the streets and fix roads needed five votes to pass.  It only got 4.The vote came after Faulconer asked council to convene a special meeting with just 24 hours' notice.  The mayor requested it after learning there weren't enough valid signatures collected to place the measure on the November ballot. 602
