CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- The Sweetwater Union High School District is working with teachers to prepare for distance learning if and when classes resume after Spring Break. The district is currently closed because of coronavirus concerns, but district officials tell 10News plans are already in motion to figure out a way to complete the school year. District spokesperson Manny Rubio tells 10News the district is looking at distance learning, which can mean a number of things. Teachers could either teach virtually from home or provide students with learning material. Rubio says a majority of students already do a lot of online work and many of them have take home devices. The plans include addressing concerns that some students might not have devices or internet at their homes. Wednesday night, the district and the teachers union sent out a letter with guidance and information for teachers on how to move forward. All schools were deep cleaned and sanitized. Some schools are allowing teachers to enter their classrooms to get whatever materials they may need. For now, the plan is to have teachers return from Spring Break and allow for 2-3 days of planning before giving any direction to students and their parents. Officials are also keeping a close eye on updates from the state and the department of education. CHULA VISTA, Calif (KGTV) -- More than 20 people showed up to a town hall meeting hosted by the Baldwin and Sons regarding their development in Otay Ranch.Right now, the massive project includes 292 condos, 300 apartments, a 2-acre park and 15,000 square feet of commercial and retail space, as well as two hotels.  One of the hotels opened in 2017, and condos are under construction.The developer now wants to add 300 more apartments to their plan.  They say the plan will not require any additional space but instead will require a different building and site design.RELATED: Developer wants to add 300 apartments to Chula Vista propertyMany in the community raised concerns about traffic and the overcrowding in schools at the open house. Developers were there to address those concerns.According to Nick Lee, a study of the area says the roads it can accommodate nearly 12,000 trips a day. Even with the additional 300 units, it would push those numbers to around 8,000 trips a day.They also said they’ve spoken with the Elementary and High School districts, and both have told them they should be able to accommodate the students with their existing facilities.The developers expect to bring the new plans to planning commission next month. 1268

The latest numbers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show 1 in 5 school-aged children in America is considered obese.The Kohler family works hard to raise their children healthy. But one medical professional says it’s also the government’s responsibility to help.Dr. Scott Kahan, who sits on the board of directors for the Obesity Action Coalition, says it's not just the Kohler’s responsibility to keep their children healthy, it’s also on local and state governments to make a difference.   "For example, local policies that increase the opportunity, that increase physical activity during the school day have come into place, and that's a good area for governments to work on," Dr. Kahan says.   The Kohler family agrees.   According to the CDC, only 29 percent of high school students attended physical education classes in 2015.   Family and consumer science classes, once known as home economics, are dwindling in schools, mainly due to problems finding qualified teachers.  "Parents can take it on themselves to learn more about the eating and activity and come up with creative ways to help their kids be a little bit healthier," Dr. Kahan says.   When it comes to school lunches, 50 percent of kids’ daily caloric intake come from them, and 31 million kids eat them every day, according to Kaiser Permanente. That's why there are guidelines in place to keep them healthy.   The Kohler family feels lucky to be able to make their children healthy lunches.   "We know what's going into their lunch box and what they are going to eat every day,” the Kohler parents say.   Dr. Kahan says we need to stop pointing the finger and realize parents, schools, state and local governments all play a role in a child’s life.   "We help everyone to pull together, so that we can all lead healthier and happier lives," Dr. Kahan says. 2005

CHULA VISTA (KGTV) - A DUI/Driver's License checkpoint at one of Chula Vista's busiest intersections led to three arrests, police said.The Chula Vista Police Department said officers screened 751 vehicles at the checkpoint which was was conducted between 7 p.m. Friday and 1 a.m. Saturday in the 600 block of Palomar Street.Police said the three drivers were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. In addition to the three arrests, police impounded nine vehicles and issued 21 citations for people driving without licenses or on suspended licenses. No other details were released.A total of 51 citations were issued for "various vehicle code violations," according to police."DUI/Drivers License checkpoints have been shown to lower DUI deaths and injuries. A major component of these checkpoints are the deterrent effects it has on those who might drive drunk or drugged impaired, bringing about more awareness and encouraging everyone to use sober designated drivers," the Chula Vista Police Department said in a release.More than 1,300 cars traveled through the checkpoint, police said.The checkpoint was funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration."The Chula Vista PD will be conducting additional DUI/Drivers License Checkpoints through out the remainder of the year in our ongoing commitment to lowering deaths and injuries upon our streets and highways," police said. 1505

(KGTV) - The scared whimpers of a little dog which had been missing from his Eastlake home for days led to a courageous rescue by a Chula Vista firefighter Thursday morning.The 30-pound dog, Sammy, disappeared from his home in Eastlake Trails Monday, according to Chula Vista Fire Department officials.Early Thursday morning, Sammy’s family noticed sounds coming from a drainage pipe near their home on Secret Canyon Place.Family members called the fire department which responded, along with Chula Vista Public Works crews and Chula Vista Police, to find the dog in an 18-inch drainage pipe underground.Firefighter Jed Burt went down a manhole and crawled through the drainage pipe, which was roughly the size of his helmet, to reach Sammy.When the dog refused to come out on his own, Burt pushed the dog through the pipe to another manhole nearby.Video posted on the IAFF Local 2180 Chula Vista Firefighters union Instagram account shows the moment Sammy reached the surface.Sammy was reunited with his family and suffered no apparent injuries.10News is working to bring you developments in this story. 1137
