BEIJING, Feb.11 (Xinhua) -- Representatives from different sectors have given feedback on drafts of the government work report and China's economic and social development blueprint for the next five years, the State Council, China's cabinet, said Friday.Premier Wen Jiabao chaired five seminars from Jan. 20 to 27, at which representatives of various sectors of society were invited to voice their views on the documents, according to a State Council statement.The 12th five-year program, or the national development plan for 2011 to 2015, and the government work report will be delivered for review at the plenary session of the National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature, in March.Experts from social economic organizations along with those from science and technology, education, health, culture and sports circles attended the meetings, as well as members of non-communist parties.Participants at the seminars agreed on the framework and main content of the documents. They also gave some suggestions and proposed a couple of revisions to the report and the development plan.Most suggestions focused on China's economic restructuring, income distribution adjustment, modern agricultural development, scientific innovation, reform of the yuan exchange rate formation mechanism, property market regulation and affordable housing construction, and further improvement in education and medical care system.The forums also invited 11 grass-roots representatives, including farmers, technicians, and owners of small businesses, who raised suggestions to boost farmland irrigation construction, train more technicians, and help with the development of small and medium enterprises.Wen said the feedback will be "of great help" when revising both the government work report and 12th five-year plan, as well as to the work of the government.

BEIJING, Feb. 2, (Xinhua) -- All Chinese travelers stranded in Egypt are expected to have been returned to China by Thursday, the start of the Spring Festival, said China's national tourism authorities late Wednesday.As of the Spring Festival Eve, most of the Chinese tourists stranded in Egypt due to the country's nation-wide protests had been flown back to China by chartered planes, according to a statement released by the National Holiday Office, an inter-ministerial agency led by the National Tourism Administration.China had sent a total of eight "special commercial flights" to Cairo, Luxor and Hurghada to bring back Chinese citizens stranded in these cities, and six of the planes had returned, carrying 1,371 people, including those from Hong Kong, according to the Chinese Foreign Ministry.The Spring Festival is the Chinese lunar New Year, a time for family reunions, according to Chinese tradition.The National Holiday Office has also issued warnings about traveling to Australia, as tropical cyclone Yasi was expected to make landfall in northeast Queensland late Wednesday local time.

BEIJING, Feb. 12 (Xinhua)-- China said late Saturday that members of the United Nations should work for a broadly-based consensus on the reform of the UN Security Council.Foreign Ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu made the remarks in response to a relevant question.Media reports had it that a recently-released declaration by some countries said most of UN member nations supported enlarging the council with new permanent and non-permanent members, and insisted tangible results be achieved in this regard during the Current Session of the UN General Assembly.Ma said China held that UN member nations should seek for a package of solutions for the reform, on the basis of broad and democratic consultation among member nations to accommodate interests and concerns of all parties.He said though some positive progress had been made since inter-government negotiations regarding the reform of the UN Security Council were launched, there were still serious differences within all parties over certain important issues about the reform.China advocated that the more differences the member countries had on the reform, the more necessary for UN member nations to enhance dialogue and consultation, he said."Experience has proven that presetting results for the reform or forcing premature reform plans will not only undermine the unity of UN member nations, but also harm the reform process, which will not be in line with any party's interests," he said.China is ready to maintain contact with all relevant parties, and make joint efforts with other member nations to push forward the reform in a way which can be conducive to safeguarding the overall interests of UN and the unity of the member nations, said Ma.

BEIJING, Feb. 23 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), China's top political advisory body, opened its door to 43 correspondents from 33 overseas media outlets on Wednesday, 10 days ahead of its upcoming annual session.It was the first time that the top political advisory body invited a group of overseas journalists, including those from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, to tour its work place, which used to be the site of an imperial compound 100 years ago.The media tour was hailed by Zhao Qizheng, head of the CPPCC's Committee of Foreign Affairs, as a move that reflects the "enhanced openness" of the CPPCC.During the tour, resident reporters from countries and regions such as the United States, Russia, Germany and Japan visited the CPPCC auditorium and a gallery that exhibits the agency's history and its role in Chinese political life through numerous pictures and relics.Located in downtown Beijing, the CPPCC was established on September 21, 1949. It is a patriotic united front organization for Chinese people and serves as a key mechanism for multi-party cooperation and political consultation under the leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC).The main functions of the CPPCC are to conduct political consultations, exercise democratic supervision and participate in the discussion and the handling of state affairs. Reporters raised many questions during the visit.Watanabe Yasuhito, a staff correspondent for the Kyodo News China General Bureau, has been working in China for four years. "As Japan doesn't have similar institutions like the CPPCC, the Japanese generally have little idea of it," he said. So we are interested to see how China is addressing the challenges," he said.With the application still going on, overseas reporters who are to cover this year's annual CPPCC session are expected to exceed 1,100, similar to the figure last year, said Zhang Jing'an, head of the Bureau of News Service of the CPPCC's National Committee.Zhang said that besides the three news conferences in the Great Hall of People, five press conferences are devoted to issues such as China's urbanization, scientific innovation, culture and education. BEIJING, March 11(Xinhuanet)-- People with more fat around their waist, often known as “apple shape”, may not have a greater risk of heart attack than those with fatter bottoms and hips, according to a new study published in Lancet as quotted by media reports Friday.This study funded by the Medical Research Council and British Heart Foundation, reviewed 220,000 individual records from 17 countries and monitored the occurrence of heart attacks or strokes based on body mass index (BMI) versus waist-hip circumference. It found that people with "apple-shaped" obesity were at a higher risk of having heart risks compared to those with general obesity as assessed by their BMI.  This contradicts previous claims that "apple shaped" bodies were three times more likely to suffer heart attacks than those with more generally distributed fat.But experts warn obesity is still bad for the heart, no matter where the fat is, and they argue there is confusion about the best way to measure it. "Regardless of how you measure it, being obese is bad for your heart. This study suggests that measuring your waist is no better than calculating your BMI but it's not time to throw away the tape measure just yet, “Dr Mike Knapton, associate medical director at the British Heart Foundation said."We tend to underestimate our body shape and size, so measuring our waist or checking our BMI are both quick and easy ways we can check our health at home."Besides, he also listed some other heart risk factors that we need to think about too, such as blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes and smoking.
