URBANA-CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – As colleges and universities are tasked with safely beginning classes, researchers at one school are ramping up testing. But they're putting away the nasal swab in exchange for a test they say can be scaled to perform thousands of tests a day with turnaround in just hours.College junior Alliyah Rumbolt-Lemond is already back on campus and regularly testing for COVID-19.“I know if you have in-person classes, you're going to be on campus, you have to get tested twice a week,” she says.The college junior is one of the more than 51,000 students at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign returning to school during the pandemic, posing a logistical challenge for administrators.“It was very daunting,” said U of I chemistry professor Marty Burke.He was part of the team of university researchers who developed a two-step saliva-based COVID-19 test to tackle the problem.“We called this our ‘target, test and tell’ initiative, overall collectively described as a ‘Shield.’”The Shield Initiative needed to be scalable, and unlike the four-step nasopharyngeal swab tests, not vulnerable to supply chain bottlenecks.“It's a very powerful concept that if we can get to that fast, frequent testing, we really could get control of the situation,” said Burke.A quick stop on route to class or work, integrated with local health care agencies, students receive results on an app within hours, not days.“It takes about five to ten minutes to submit your saliva sample and then the results are typically back on your phone within three to six hours,” said Burke.The university’s veterinary school diagnostic lab has been converted into a full-scale human COVID-19 testing facility. It’s capable of processing some 10 to 20,0000 saliva tests per day.“I want to hang out with friends and do it the right way, like following CDC guidelines,” said Alliyah. “But I feel more comfortable saying ‘hey when's the last time you got tested?’”A total of 20 testing sites with 40 stations are set up across campus. Users can even get exposure notifications if they’ve been in contact with someone who tests positive.“If someone tests positive then same day that person is isolated,” said Burke. “Which we think is critical for ultimately the efficacy of the testing program.”They’ve published a pre-print paper on their COVID-19 saliva test, which is undergoing peer review and are seeking FDA approval.For students like Alliyah, it’s one-stop piece of mind.“It makes you feel like I'm safer on campus because even though we only have to get tested twice a week you can get tested every day the testing site is open if you wanted to.” 2653

(KGTV) — A week after a cancellation of a holiday tradition at a cemetery in Valley Center, a community wrapped up their campaign to save Christmas for many military families.Because of COVID-related issues, the nonprofit that places more than 300 Christmas wreaths at military grave markers at Valley Center Cemetery announced Friday it wouldn't be able to this year."I just felt defeated ... My heart dropped," said Jenelle Brinemann.Brinemann, a local florist, decided to post on Facebook a call for donations to make wreath sprays, a smaller version of wreaths."It shows we have Christmas spirit still, even during this hard time," said Brinemann.A day later, her driveway was filled was with donated cedar, pine, and ribbons. More than 50 volunteers signed up to help assemble. Kids sent messages to attach to the sprays and on Wednesday, the project was completed."Great way for the town to come together ... shows there's still love in the world," said Brinemann.Among those who stepped up were members of the Green Knights Military Motorcycle Club, who saw our story on the wreath campaign, and volunteered their services.On this day, they escorted the volunteers to the cemetery."We felt we had to help them, because it was the right thing to do. We have to honor our veterans that have gone before us," said club member Tyler Nelson."It was overwhelming. The whole neighborhood turned out, cheering. They had posters. TULSA, Okla. — Several Tulsans are outraged after Spanish-speaking families were turned away during a holiday toy registration at Loaves and Fishes ministry."My children are Hispanic. We speak predominantly Spanish at home, so for someone to be turned away for their language it really offended me," said Megan Aviles, who witnessed the incident. It was Tuesday when Aviles stood in line with her two daughters waiting to register for the ministry's annual toy giveaway. She noticed several Hispanic women in front were being denied access to the registration because they didn't speak English."I went forward to try and assist and was like 'look, I can translate for these women. I'm bilingual,' " said Aviles.However, the pastor and executive director of the organization admitted he didn't allow her or anyone else to translate for the families."The reason I didn't use one of our guests or a family member or even a child is my experience with interpreters is they don't necessarily interpret what I say," said pastor Al Poncel.He said he would feel more comfortable having interpreters he knows, so nothing is lost in translation. Poncel said this is the first time that he has ran into a language issue at the ministry after years of being with the organization, but still he felt he made a mistake by turning away the families just because he didn't have the staff to help with the high demand."I didn't want to hurt anybody's feelings. I didn't want to offend anybody. I want to help as many people as I can," said Poncel.He said he is looking at ways to improve and be more inclusive of the needs of the community, so he is already looking at partnering with other local ministries and organizations to help interpret in the future."The 18 and 19 is going to be big days of our Christmas outreach. VALLEY CENTER (CNS) - The first two homebuilders were named Wednesday for a master-planned community to be built on the site of a former dairy farm in Valley Center.Shea Homes and Beazer Homes will construct some of the 632 planned residences in the 186-acre Park Circle being developed by Touchstone Communities, a San Diego-based real estate investment and land development company.Walnut-based Shea Homes has an office in San Diego. Beazer Homes, based out of Atlanta, has built communities in Fallbrook and Oceanside.The Park Circle community will be the core of Valley Center's South Village and has been in the making for seven years.
