SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Video shows a brutal fight outside a Pacific Beach bar and restaurant that sent a bouncer to the hospital with critical injuries. The assault happened at about 9:20 p.m. at the Firehouse, 722 Grand Ave., according to San Diego Police. Four men tried to get into the restaurant through a side entrance but the main bouncer told them to use the main door, officers said. One of the men picked up a metal crowd barrier stanchion pole and struck the bouncer over the head, said police. The bouncer suffered a skull fracture and brain bleed. Officers said he is currently in critical but stable condition in the hospital. After the pole strike, the three other men in the group began fighting with security staff members. One of the bouncers suffered a broken nose and the other two had bumps and bruises, police said. The man responsible for the pole attack is described as African-American, in his 30s, 6’0” tall, 250 pounds with a muscular build. He was wearing a white t-shirt and jeans. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - UC San Diego researchers want to understand better how humans are impacting climate change, looking to the ocean for answers. Inside the Hydraulics Lab at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography sits a large tank mimicking the ocean. "It's a one-of-a-kind experiment that has taken us eight years to get to the point of doing," said Kimberly Prather, Professor of Atmospheric Chemistry at UC San Diego. Funding for the novel project comes from the National Science Foundation, which put million into the first five years of research and another million into the next five years. When waves break, salts and other living material including viruses and bacteria are launched in the form of sea spray aerosols into the atmosphere. Scientists are interested in better understanding the role of these particles in controlling climate by forming clouds over oceans that cover nearly three-quarters of the earth's surface.Now the research includes experiments to determine how pollution from human activities interact with natural ocean emissions and change the chemical composition of the atmosphere."A lot of people still deny that humans are the ones changing things, this experiment will pinpoint how much and how fast humans are changing things," said Prather.She says changes in the ocean, atmosphere, and climate are happening much faster than scientists once thought. "We used to say we're passionate about it because it's affecting our kids and our grandkids. But it's affecting us right now, today," said Prather.They hope to pinpoint which human activities, like car emissions or coal combustion, are doing the most harm.Prather hopes answers discovered in the lab will guide policymakers on how to tackle the growing threat. 1765

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Two new charges have been filed in the case against a La Jolla restaurant owner accused of sexually assaulting multiple women.Authorities say five victims have now come forward claiming Daniel Dorado, 59, sexually assaulted them.The fifth victim came forward after last week’s arraignment, telling the San Diego Police Department about an incident that happened in 2014.RELATED: La Jolla restaurant owner accused of sexual assault makes first court appearance?Prosecutors say the assaults took place over a nine-year period beginning in 2009 and ending in January of 2018.Dorado pleaded not guilty earlier in April to 14 counts brought against him, including rape of an unconscious person.RELATED: Woman claims she was drugged during job interviewDorado was arrested in March. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- A San Diego mother says working from home during the coronavirus pandemic cost her her job. She claims she was fired because her kids were making noises in the background of her teleconference calls."We're letting you go," Drisana Rios said. That was what her Human Resources representative told her in a call earlier this month. She said she thought the call was supposed to help resolve her workplace problems. Instead, by the end of the call, she says she was fired.Rios says it all began in mid-March when her bosses at an out-of-state insurance firm told her to work from home and telecommute via conference calls. This was in response to the state's COVID-19 lockdown orders.Rios says all parents working from home received an email from the company's regional boss that read, "thank you for the incredible effort you are putting forth through these difficult times." She says it also said that they would avoid layoffs during the pandemic.Like many parents, Rios was unable to find childcare for her four-year-old daughter and one-year-old son. Despite juggling parenting and working from home, Rios claims she was able to complete all her tasks. She adds that her clients never complained about her kids being in the background of her conference calls. The only complaints, she says, came from her male, direct superior."I said, 'Do you want me to lock my kids in the room? My one-year-old in the room? Do you want me to do that?' And… he responded and said, 'Figure it out.'" Rios said.She says she tried to arrange calls to be during her children's afternoon naptimes but claims her boss continued to ignore and demean her."He would purposely overlap schedules," Rios said.Rios then reached out to her HR department and asked how she should deal with the harassment she says she was experiencing-- a move she says that backfired a week later."She was shamed for having children, so she first elevated it to Human Resources," Daphne Delvaux, Sr. trial attorney at Gruenberg Law, said. "Human Resources took the side of the abusive manager, and terminated her for complaining."Rios has since filed a lawsuit against both her direct boss and the company for Gender discrimination, Retaliation, Gender harassment, Failure to prevent gender discrimination, Negligent supervision, Intentional infliction of emotional distress, and Wrongful termination in violation of public policy.In her complaint, Rios claims her HR representative told her that the company was "...experiencing a reduced revenue due to COVID-19 and they were laying [the] plaintiff off as a result of the pandemic." SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diegans requested a record number of mail-in ballots for th 2018 general election, 1.2 million to be exact.Now, as tens of thousands arrive at the Registrar's office every day ahead of election day, new technology is helping make sure every ballot is processed and counted."This is our 144 pocket ballot sorter," says Registrar Michael Vu, showing off one of two brand new machines his office bought with this election in mind."After the 2016 election we said the mail ballot population is so great we need to invest in something that's even higher speed," says Vu.The new machine can process up to 44,000 ballots per hour, twice the number of the old machine. It can also sort them by city and council district. That comes in handy with an election as big as this week's."We have 326 contests on ballot, spanning 485 candidates, and 52 measures on there," says Vu.By late Sunday, the Registrar had already received about 500,000 mail-in ballots. That includes several thousand people who voted early in-person.
