SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police searched Tuesday for the man who may have groped several women in the South Bay.The most recent encounter happened Sunday at 7:30 p.m. as the woman was walking on Iris Ave. and Oro Vista Rd. in Nestor, police said.A man walking the opposite direction grabbed the woman’s breast, then ran away.The woman wasn’t hurt and told police the man didn’t appear to have a weapon.Police said the man was Hispanic, in his early 20’s, 5’6” tall with a heavy build. He was wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt with the hood up, black athletic shorts, and black shoes.The man may be responsible for two similar attacks in the same area, said officers.The first incident happened October 30 at 7:30 pm. and the second was January 17 at 9:30 p.m., both on Oro Vista Rd. near the I-5 and 905 interchange.Anyone with information is asked to call the San Diego Police Department at 619-531-2000. 916

The sun's out, the temperature is just right, and crane flies are buzzing.Those mosquito-looking bugs that bounce around like bumper cars can be seen around town even more this season, after one of the wettest winters San Diego has seen in some time.Crane flies, routinely called "mosquito hawks" and "skeeter eaters," frequent San Diego throughout the year, but are especially active in the spring during breeding.RELATED:How the wild parrots of San Diego arrived in America's Finest CityDoes more rain mean more mosquitoes? No, but San Diego may get 'buggy' this springAnd with a rainy winter comes the likelihood of even more, according to Chris Conlan, San Diego County's supervising vector ecologist."We’ve already had people calling us (Vector Control) about them," Conlan said. "They think they’re big mosquitoes."But they're not. And a couple of the assumptions about the insect also need some clearing up.They aren't mosquitoesCrane flies are harmless to humans, Conlan says. Both crane flies are part of the order Diptera, or "flies," but mosquitoes are a part of family Culicidae. Crane flies are part of the family Tipulidae.And because they're usually caught buzzing around porch lights quickly or around a home even, residents may get scared upon seeing them.“They’re very attracted to lights, so if you have any around openings to your home, it’s very easy for them to get accidentally swept into the house,” Conlan said. “And then they end up freaking you and the cat out!”While they are big for bugs, reaching up to an inch or more in length, their pole-like legs can make them appear even larger.But there's a rule of thumb Conlan advises residents follow: If it looks bigger than a dime, it's too big to be a mosquito.They don't eat mosquitoesAnother big misconception, brought on by their nicknames, is that they eat mosquitoes.Crane flies don't suck blood — most adult flies actually don't eat eat all. If they do eat, they drink nectar. The bug doesn't bite and can't transmit any diseases. And their larvae generally feed off decaying organic matter while living in wet soil.In fact, they're more likely to be eaten by birds, lizards, and other creatures. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Steele Canyon High School is one of two evacuation sites run by the American Red Cross for people affected by the Valley Fire, but they're not housing people like they normally would. Instead, they're acting as a resource facility for families like the Roberts'."Mine was one of the only houses in the neighborhood that went up," Alana Roberts said. Her weekend was turned upside down when she got word of the Valley Fire, which went from 100 to more than 10,000 acres in less than 48 hours, claimed her home. "I was in Oceanside and we raced to get in and as soon as we were in our truck, cops said 'you need to go now'", Roberts recalled.She was able to gather just a few belongings. "It was me and my husband who went in and grabbed what we could and let animals free. I had chickens and I couldn’t get them all."And now, she's one of the dozens of people seeking relief and a place to sleep at one of American Red Cross' evacuation sites."Someone gave me dog food, food for the kids, and we have the restrooms so we can kind of wash up." These sites typically provide shelter for families seeking relief, this time around, they couldn't."Outdoor sheltering is basically what we’re doing, people are in the lots in their cars and are acquiring hotel vouchers to put people in lodging," said Earl Potts with the American Red Cross. So far, 60 people have received hotel vouchers but last night they ran out, forcing people like Roberts to hunker down in their cars, trailers, and RVs. "We figure the family will stay together, and hunker down together."The Red Cross said as the holiday weekend comes to an end, they're hoping to get at least 200 more rooms available. "We’re able to provide meals at certain times of day and a place to park and sleep which makes it less but more of a priority situation."Alana said she's just thankful her family is safe and is going to return to what's left of her home once they're given the go-ahead."I don’t know if its truly set in. This morning my husband made me coffee and I thought about my brand new coffee maker I got for Christmas. I get camping coffee to drink now, I don't think it's really set in." 2179

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Unified School District is warning parents and staff of a breach involving the personal data of students and staff.District official said in a release the breach dating back to January 2018 may have impacted the personal data of as many as 500,000 students enrolled in the district between the 2008-2009 and 2018-2019 school years.The data is believe to have been accessed by a phishing email effort, according to the district. Those staff members and parents affected have been alerted by SDUSD.Officials said investigators began looking into reports of phishing emails in October 2018. At that time, roughly 50 staff members whose accounts were compromised had security on their accounts reset immediately, according to the district. An investigation determined that unauthorized access was gained to the district’s network services, including their student database. The student database contains personal identifying information, potential health information, scheduling, and grade information.The district says it has since taken steps to prevent unauthorized access from reoccurring and to "eliminate" any continuing threat.SDUSD told 10News the breach wasn't announced until now because officials wanted to verify all their information and not compromise the investigation.“Data security has become an increasing concern for public agencies, corporations and private citizens nationwide,” Toren Allen, executive director of San Diego Unified’s Integrated Technology Department, said. “We are constantly reviewing our practices and systems in an effort to find efficiencies and to identify potential vulnerabilities.”The district recommends that anyone whose data may have been accessed to remain vigilant of their credit cards and account and contact a credit reporting agency to notify them of the breach of information.
