DELRAY BEACH, Fla. — A South Florida driver recounted the terrifying moments a piece of metal smashed through his windshield while driving on Interstate 95, missing him by inches. The Florida Highway Patrol said the incident happened Tuesday around 3:30 p.m. south of the Woolbright Road exit.Officials said the metal flew off a tow truck and into Eduardo Medina's truck. The metal missed Medina by inches, leaving a few scratches on his face and hands from the glass.Medina, who speaks Spanish, had his wife Norma Rodriquez translate the moments he scary crash."All he heard was an explosion. He said he is fine, nothing hurts, nothing hit him," Rodriquez said. 668

DENVER — Twenty years ago, Gary Jugert found love at a music shop."I bought a ukulele at a secondhand store and back then there weren’t any books or classes so I had to teach myself how to play ukulele. It turns out it’s a very fun and exciting instrument that you can share with other people," Jugert said.He began teaching lessons and even opened up a ukulele repair shop, though he says he was not a naturally musical person."I didn't start music seriously until I was 35," he said.Still, in 2012, Jugert created the Rocky Mountain Ukulele Orchestra. It was a huge hit until the pandemic silenced its 100 or so musicians in March."We instantaneously could not meet anymore and so several of us decided, hey, what are our alternatives for getting the group together?" Jugert said. "And we tried all of the various platforms. The problem was there’s a tiny bit of a lag on Zoom classes and because we play instrumental — ensemble music — it doesn’t work without post-editing. I said, 'Well, why don’t we meet on YouTube?'"That is how this silver lining came to be. Each morning, Jugert heads to his spare bedroom where people from all over the world log on for his lessons. He said 90% of the people who log on are 55 and older, and 80% are women. He's become such a hit, he now teaches six 45-minute classes every day."I just love it," Jugert said. His students say this is about so much more than making music."It’s just such a good social outlet. I retired a year and a half ago so I don’t see my work friends anymore," said student, Jeri Sampson. "It’s been a real good social thing for me."This may not be the orchestra the musicians envisioned, but thanks to Jugert, it's become everything they need."People need something to do right now. They need quality education. Musically, it’s hard to get right now. I think with the challenges music teachers are facing in music education, why not do it?" Jugert said. This story originally reported by Molly Hendrickson on TheDenverChannel.com. 1999

DENVER — A Denver couple that drove to Little Rock, Arkansas to pick up three puppies purchased online, is now warning others about a pet scam that cost them hundreds of dollars.Breckenridge and Mary Lynn Grover love French bulldogs. They had two until September when their beloved “Derby” died.“He’d eaten supper and went outside,” Breckenridge Grover said. “I heard a scream, went downstairs and saw him lying down.”He said he tried to resuscitate the dog.“He died in my arms of a heart attack,” he said. The couple told KMGH that with Derby gone, their other French bulldog, Liza Jane, became listless and depressed.Last month, they decided to look online for a new dog, as a companion for Liza Jane.Seller pours on the charmThey found a pug in Austin. Mary Lynn Grover said the owner asked them to send money via the Zelle app. They hadn’t used it before but thought they’d give it a try, then had second thoughts.“We did everything,” she said. “Wells Fargo was wonderful getting things back, saying ‘I think this guy chickened out. He didn’t even have a Zelle account.’ ”The Grovers continued their search, trying to be more cautious the second time around. They found three French bulldogs via online advertisements and said the seller poured on the charm.“He said, ‘Now you are part of my family. These were my mother’s puppies.’ He even sent us a picture of the kennel he was buying for us and said, ‘I will make dinner.’ I mean he knew me as a soft spot. He said all the right things to me.”The Denver couple drove to Arkansas. But halfway there they received a phone call.“He said, ‘Oh, by the way, could you also pick up a gift card at Walmart?’ ”Mary Lynn said that’s when the red flags went up.She said they didn’t pick up a gift card; they just kept driving.“I texted him, saying ‘We’re coming.’ We got to the house; it’s dark,” she said. There was no answer at the door, so Mary Lynn Grover called the two numbers they had for the seller, who said his name was Bill Todd.“A woman answered and asked, ‘How did you get this number?’ I described what happened. She said, ‘he did the exact same thing to me, for 0,’ ” she said. The Grovers said they are working with the Arkansas Attorney General, Better Business Bureau and Little Rock Police Department.BBB response“A lot of scams are tricky and hard to understand,” said Ezra Coopersmith, the investigations coordinator at the Better Business Bureau. “This one isn’t. It just stinks.”Coopersmith said there are more scams reported around the holidays because pets are often given as gifts. He added that scammers will often try to squeeze their victims for more cash by charging for shipping the fake pets.Second victimAurora, Colorado resident Ronald Mills said he was told the 0 he paid for a pug he found on Craigslist for his grandson would cover shipping charges. He later received an email saying it would cost ,000 to ship third class, ,100 to ship second class and ,200 to ship first class.“I called (the seller) and said, ‘I guess I’m not getting the dog and you scammed me,’ ” Mills said. “I said, ‘this is a scam.’ He said, ‘Oh sir, this is not a scam. I’m a good Christian.’ He wasn’t a Christian.”BBB adviceCoopersmith said people purchasing pets should follow these guidelines: 3334

DENVER, Colorado — Ask any Colorado teenager, and almost all will admit vaping is a problem among their peers."I think it's something that's pretty prevalent. To have 13-year-olds addicted to nicotine is pretty bad," said Colleen Campbell a senior at South High School."JUULing is the most popular one," said Abdi Bhandari, a senior at Mountain Vista High School. An epidemic that has even gotten Governor John Hickenlooper's attention. He recently signed an executive order to urge state lawmakers to act to curb youth vaping.Hickenlooper is asking them to raise the minimum age to buy e-cigarettes to 21 and to consider banning flavored tobacco."It is right now, one in four teenagers in Colorado that are vaping," Hickenlooper told students at a packed auditorium at South High School."It is becoming a huge national problem and it's even bigger locally," said Dr. Megan Moini, a pediatrician at Centura Health in Erie.Moini is on the front lines of the vaping debate and said she has seen more and more teens get addicted to vaping."Boulder County, for example, has about three times the national average of vaping use among high schoolers," she said.Moini also said she thinks it's time for the state to crackdown and believes teens are being fooled into thinking vaping is safe and natural."Hopefully, we're getting a hold of it sooner than we did with cigarettes," she said. "The advertisers know what they're doing."Justin Zamora is a daily vape user and is also an employee at a local vape shop."I don't think it's fair because this is helping more people than it's hurting," he said. From Zamora's perspective, underage vaping is like underage anything."I hate it because it's just like they're scrutinizing our industry when there's underage drinkers, there's underage weed smokers, there's underage tobacco smokers," he explained.Zamora also said he has seen firsthand how vaping can help customers kick their cigarette habit."I've had customers come in reeking of cigarettes and then a couple weeks later they smell like vape coming in and they're like 'hey man' 'thank you'," he said. The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment released results of the Colorado Healthy Kids Survey earlier this year, which showed Colorado ranked the highest for youth vaping out of 37 states surveyed across the United States.According to the survey, only 7 percent of high school students currently smoke cigarettes, while 27 percent said they vape nicotine. The statewide school survey shows 87 percent of Colorado high school students think cigarette smoking is risky, but only 50 percent believe those risks apply to vaping nicotine. The CDPHE said a separate, more comprehensive state survey shows about half of Colorado high school students have tried vaping nicotine, don’t see it as risky and think vaping products are easy to get, even though it is illegal to purchase them as minors. While no one seems to argue, teen vaping is a problem. It's what we do about it that's still creating controversy. 3032
