MOHEGAN LAKE, N.Y. — Angelina Friedman, a 102-year-old nursing home resident, recently survived her second bout with COVID-19, according to her daughter Joanne Merola."Not only has she beaten COVID at 101, she's beaten it at 102," Merola said.Friedman also has the unique distinction of living through two global pandemics.During the 1918 pandemic, Angelina Sciales was born on a passenger ship taking immigrants from Italy to New York City."She was born on a ship coming from Italy during the Spanish flu," Merola said earlier this year. "Her birthday was Oct. 18, 1918."Angelina's mother died giving birth on the ship."She was helped by her two sisters," Merola said of her mother.When Angelina's father reunited with his daughters in New York, he took them to live in Brooklyn."She was one of 11 children," Merola said. "She's the last one surviving."Angelina eventually married a man named Harold Friedman. The couple battled cancer later in life, but only Angelina overcame the disease.She's lost most of her hearing and her vision is bad, but she's retained her zest for life.Friedman, a resident of the North Westchester Restorative Therapy and Nursing Center, battled COVID-19 most recently in October, according to her daughter.Her first bout with the virus happened in March when she was taken to the hospital for a minor medical procedure.When she initially tested positive for COVID-19, the procedure was postponed and Friedman spent a week in the hospital. She then returned to the nursing home and was isolated in her room.After running a fever on and off for several weeks, Friedman finally tested negative for coronavirus on April 20.At the time, Friedman's daughter received a late-night phone call from nurses. They said Friedman was doing great, that she was eating again and looking for yarn for crocheting."My mother is a survivor," Merola said in April. "She survived miscarriages, internal bleeding and cancer."Six months after that first COVID-19 diagnosis, Friedman's daughter said she received a call from the nursing home in late October, "to tell me she tested positive again.""She had symptoms — fever, a dry cough," Merola said. "...they gave her a bunch of meds. They thought she might also have the flu."More staff and residents at the nursing home were getting sick, according to Merola, so the older residents were put in isolation.Merola said she got daily updates on the situation, and on Nov. 17 she received great news."My invincible mother tested negative," she said.After another test came back negative, Friedman was moved out of isolation and back into her regular room.Merola said she attributes her mother's survival to "an iron will to live.""She's not the oldest to survive COVID, but she may be the oldest to survive it twice," she said.This story was originally published by Mary Murphy on WPIX in New York City. 2868

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) -- The world's last male northern white rhino died Monday in Africa, putting the species closer to extinction.The rhino, named "Sudan" died of age-related complications. More than 900 people in 48 states have been sickened with salmonella, and at least one person has died, likely caused by backyard poultry like chickens and ducks.While outbreaks of salmonella from backyard poultry is not uncommon, the number of cases this year is higher than normal, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. They report 15 multi-state outbreak strains currently being investigated.Since June 24, 473 more people have gotten sick according to CDC’s data, for a total of 938 people infected with salmonella so far this year. Roughly 33 percent of those who got sick had to be hospitalized. The one reported death was in Oklahoma.At the end of July 2019, 768 people in this country had gotten sick from salmonella linked to live poultry.The CDC was able to interview about 400 patients this year, and of those, 74 percent reported having contact with chicks or ducklings. Testing from backyard poultry environments in Kentucky and Oregon identified three of the outbreak strains.The CDC recommends frequent handwashing with soap and water whenever a backyard poultry animal is touched or handled, or their eggs or habitat is touched. They also warn against letting backyard poultry inside the house, especially in areas where food is prepared. 1285

MOYOCK, N.C. – Three-year-old Vernon Smith is passionate about fire trucks and got a major surprise from dozens of first responders this weekend. Crawford Township Volunteer Fire Department in North Carolina hosted a drive-by parade for the little boy who is about to have his third open heart surgery.Vernon’s dad, Blake Smith, wanted to put a smile on his son’s face, so he asked if the local fire truck could drive by. Word got around about Vernon’s story, and dozens of firefighters, police and others wanted to be part of the surprise.Other surrounding departments learned about the event and joined in: Moyock Volunteer Fire Department, the Lower Currituck Volunteer Fire Department, the South Camden Volunteer Fire Department, Currituck County Fire-EMS, the Currituck County Sheriff’s Department, the Camden County Sheriff’s Department, Pasquotank EMS, Lantz’s Towing, and North Carolina State Highway Patrol.One of the assistant chiefs for the Crawford Township Volunteer Fire Department, Keith Storf, said the support they got from the neighboring departments was just phenomenal.Vernon’s mom, Brittany Blackwelder, said when she was 21 weeks pregnant, they learned that Vernon had a heart defect called hypoplastic left heart syndrome. It is a rare disease that causes the left side of his heart to not work properly, which causes the right side to work double-time.Blackwelder said this will be his third reconstructive surgery, and said hopefully it will stabilize him. She said he can never play competitive sports and gets tired easily, but she said otherwise he should be able to live a normal life.Storf said the little boy has gone through more than most adults.
