PHOENIX — Arizona news station ABC15 has learned that an Arizona lawyer assisting the Trump campaign is looking at ballots filled out with Sharpies as one focus for what could become an attempt to flip Arizona to President Donald Trump.The attorney says many Trump supporters who used Sharpies are worried that their votes are being thrown out as the counting process continues around Arizona. There is no evidence at this point that Sharpie votes have been disqualified.The attorney, who has deep roots in the state’s election processing system, told ABC15’s Nicole Valdes that the Sharpie ballots are on the radar of those deciding what, if anything, they may do in court. The information was given on condition that the source would not be named. ABC15 has verified that the attorney has direct knowledge of the developing legal strategy for President Donald Trump in Arizona.The information comes as ABC News reported Wednesday that Governor Doug Ducey told the White House he “sees something” that could get Arizona and its 11 electoral votes in the win column for the President.At this point, there’s no sign of any movement toward actual litigation around the Sharpie ballots or any other vote casting or vote counting activity.Arizona Secretary of State Katie Hobbs is on the record defending the Sharpie ballots, though a ballpoint pen is the recommended method for filling out a ballot. ABC15 checked in with attorneys representing Democratic candidates, who say they have not heard of any potential litigation yet.Sharpie is the trademarked name of a permanent felt tip marker. Its use on Arizona ballots became a prominent conversation point on Twitter overnight.The Maricopa County Elections Department says even if marks made by Sharpies or any felt tip marker on a ballot bleed through the paper, it won't impact their tabulator's ability to read contests. Maricopa County's tabulators are designed only to read the ovals for each contest, according to county election officials. Even if ink bleeds through to the other side of the ballot, the ink won't mark another contest, since ballots are printed in an "off-set" pattern, meaning contests on the back side of the ballot don't align with those on the front.Republicans and the Trump campaign were shocked when Fox News declared Democrat Joe Biden the Arizona winner at about 9:30 p.m. on Election Day. PHOENIX — An Arizona ICU nurse does not mince words when detailing what work and life are like during the COVID-19 pandemic. Tough shifts and a potential surge that he fears will only get worse."As soon as I park, I have very low expectations these days," said Eddy De La Torre, a nurse at a Phoenix-area hospital. "It sucks to say that but it's just bad all around."De La Torre said staffing continues to be one of the biggest challenges given the increase in patients."The biggest issue is surrounding staffing," he said. "Staffing in a sense that with the amount of patients that are in the hospital, we're finding it harder and harder to find ways to provide each patient a nurse in the safest manner possible."He also described seeing extremely sick patients, and a staff that is feeling the effects of working on the front lines for months."We're exhausted, man," he said. "We're exhausted."As ICU beds become a scarce resource around the state, De La Torre told ABC15 those beds are in low supply at this hospital. As of Wednesday, the Arizona Department of Health Service's dashboard there were 9% of ICU beds available."It's very few," he said. "And it's smaller and smaller every day."Also on Wednesday, ASU Biodesign Institute Executive Director Dr. Joshua LaBaer said a peak of the current surge may not come until late January or early February."I hope they're wrong," De La Torre said. "If that is the case, then we're going to be in for a rude awakening because that's going to be bad because right now it's horrible."He also told KNXV-TV that fellow staff members are stretched thin and working to handle the uptick in patients."I wish I can tell you that I've been able to talk to a COVID patient," he said. "The last few times I've worked on that unit all my patients have been intubated and the majority of the patients in the ICU are intubated and really sick."He also talked about the ripple effect the surge has across the hospital."Oftentimes we get told, especially in our staffing meetings, that we have A, B and C patients waiting for rooms," he said. "They can be waiting for a couple hours."In the ICU, with visitor restrictions in place, De La Torre noted the mental toll this takes on front-line workers and the patients, both COVID and non-COVID, with family support left to come only via an iPad."The tears are back," he said. PLAYA DEL CARMEN, Mexico -- An explosion that tore through a ferry in Playa del Carmen injured 25 people Wednesday, according to KABC. None of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening in the explosion that took place as passengers were unloading.Local officials said 20 Mexicans, three Canadians and two Americans were all reportedly in good condition.The municipal government said victims sustained minor cuts and were treated at a local hospital. This Saturday, it will reopen at Liberty Public Station."There's not much," says owner Fredy Palma of his small space in the market. "But you won’t believe that very tasty food is going to come from here."Palma says his rent will be about half of what it used to be in Pacific Beach. He also says moving into the Public Market means he no longer has to worry about all of the little things that come along with having a brick-and-mortar location."Things like trash, telephone, light, SDG&E," he explains. He says this will let him focus more on the food and customers. "The idea behind the Public Market is it’s kind of a condo association of retailers and restaurants to lower overhead and share expenses, making it a little easier for them.
