SAN DIEGO (KGTV): A program in San Diego is making it easier for military families and veterans to get the help they need to fight food insecurity.Courage 2 Call offers food giveaways twice a month to anyone with a military ID or any veteran."We don’t have any criteria for them to go through the line," says program coordinator Angela Nagel. "They just have had to serve. We don’t look at status. We don’t look at discharge status. We don’t look at income. If you have a VA card, if you have a military id, come to courage to call we will get you set up with the resources in San Diego."The program focuses on giving out fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as other pantry staples. Nagel says, at any given event, they'll serve up to 200 people."It breaks my heart to know that these military families have to go through our lines to get food," says Nagel. "I know for active duty it is a struggle to live in San Diego because of how expensive it is here. For active duty, they should not have to be going through these lines, but they do."Food insecurity has been called a "hidden epidemic" in the military. The San Diego Hunger Coalition says that 1 in 10 people who go to food banks have a military member in their family. The Coalition says low wages for enlisted members make it difficult to keep food on the table.Courage 2 Call is one of several military-focused programs that receive food from Feeding San Diego. Many do giveaways on bases or in military housing communities. In addition to the food, the programs help connect military members and veterans to other social services and resources they have available. To find out more information, you can go to the Courage 2 Call website here.To help, be sure to donate to the Month of a Million Meals campaign from 10News. Every dollar donated helps pay for 4 meals for families in need. 1854

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Assembly Bill 5 (AB 5) may pose a new threat in plans for at-home learning this fall.AB 5 was created to help turn some gig workers, or freelancers turn into employees with benefits. The bill has been met with controversy as it has impacted thousands of freelance workers across California, and now it could change how tutors can be hired.“Many parents are scrambling right now to find out how do they help their children keep pace,” said Carl DeMaio, Chairman of Reform California.DeMaio held a press conference in Escondido with a group of parents, teachers, and education advocates by his side, calling for California Gov. Gavin Newsom to suspend AB 5.“This is absurd that the governor is allowing an environment where parents have to run the risk for violating AB 5, a state law, facing penalties and fines for doing so, just because they’re trying to help their children learn,” he said.DeMaio said parents who want a tutor for their child during this challenging time might be required to hire them as employees, not independent contractors. He has created an online petition and urges people to sign it before it’s sent to the governor.Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez authored AB 5 and sent the following statement to ABC 10News in response to DeMaio’s press conference. 1299

SAN DIEGO (KGVT) -- Parents of San Diego Unified School District students will hold a demonstration Tuesday with a goal for the school district to return to full-time, in-person education as soon as possible.Parent and family therapist Gina Smith said she started the group called "Reopen SDUSD" because she is frustrated that other San Diego County districts have set reopening dates, and many private schools are already open. The group has already started a petition which has more than 650 signatures."What sparked the fire is that other schools have reopening plans within weeks and San Diego Unifed has been silent," Smith said.San Diego Unified has not released any definitive dates or a timeline for reopening.Currently, the district is reporting a projected loss of 2,474 students. Two out of every three un-enrolled students are kindergartners. Enrolling children into kindergarten is not mandatory in the state of California. The district has a meeting scheduled for Tuesday evening, and before that meeting, hundreds of parents are expected to rally over their concerns about distance learning. Some parents say they're concerned about the mental health impact distance learning is having on their children."The isolation and lack of social interaction is a huge part that many children as young as five are experiencing depressive symptoms", Smith said. The group also will hold a protest outside San Diego Unified’s District headquarters Tuesday at 4 p.m., before the school board meeting at 5 p.m. 1519

SAN DIEGO (KGTV/CNS) - Opening statements were delivered Thursday in the civil trial between NFL quarterback Drew Brees and a La Jolla jeweler who allegedly sold the football pro and his wife diamonds far above their actual value.Brees took the stand to describe the close relationship he says he had with the store owner. "He always talked about it as being an investment," said Brees. "Something that you could see appreciate in value."The lawsuit, filed in San Diego Superior Court last year, accuses Vahid Moradi and his company, CJ Charles Jewelers, of selling Brees and his wife Brittany million worth of diamonds between 2012 to 2016. 653

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Homeless people in San Diego woke up Tuesday morning to find San Diego Police officers going street by street, offering resources.  Police officers lined the streets of the East Village. They were going street by street approaching the homeless in their tents. At one point there were at least eight patrol cars on one block.  SDPD says their efforts are a part of their ongoing outreach to let the homeless know about the resources available to them in hopes of ending the cycle of homelessness.  Most of the homeless received warnings about their property blocking the street or other violations. A few were detained for previous violations. One person was arrested for an outstanding felony warrant. Two people were transported to county mental health. Officers were also letting people know about the new bathrooms installed by the city in hopes of stopping the spread of Hepatitis A.  965
