SANTEE — A group of Santee residents trying to gather enough signatures to force a public vote on the recently approved Fanita Ranch development say they are facing intimidation from the developer.Meanwhile, the developer says the signature gatherers are the ones acting unethically.The Santee group, called Preserve Wild Santee, has until election day to gather signatures from 3,500 registered city voters to force the Santee City Council to either rescind approval of the development, or send it to a public vote.On Sept. 23, the council voted 4-1 to approve the project, which calls for roughly 3,000 new homes, 80,000 square-feet of retail space, a school, a farm and public trails. Proponents say the project would provide homes to help with the county's severe housing crisis, while opponents say it would create too much traffic and increase wildfire danger.The homes would start in the 0,000s and could be available as soon as mid-2022."We're for reasonable growth and in the right places and in the right locations, not in an extreme fire hazard location," said Santee resident Janet Garvin, one of the signature gatherers.Garvin said, however, that people who come to sign the forms are being heckled by a project supportes, funded by developer HomeFed. On Monday, Santee Councilman Stephen Houlahan, the lone no-vote on the project, confronted HomeFed's workers on camera at a strip mall."It seemed like a very, very strong coincidence that there was two women volunteering here, and they were surrounded by three men in a very intimidating posture," he said.Houlahan also said the HomeFed workers have also promised to follow signature gatherers across Santee to try to stop them from getting more supporters.But Jeff O'Connor, vice president of HomeFed, stood by the workers. He said they have been respectful, and are there to correct misinformation he says the signature gatherers about the project - namely about the improvements promised to Highway 52, and when it comes to tax increases. SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — A grandfather accused in the fatal fall of his young granddaughter from an 11th-story window of a cruise ship docked in Puerto Rico last year has pleaded guilty to negligent homicide.Salvatore Anello of Valparaiso, Indiana, earlier said he would drop a not-guilty plea to help end what he called “this nightmare" for his family.Chloe Wiegand, an 18-month-old, slipped from Anello’s grasp and fell about 150 feet from an open window of Royal Caribbean Cruises’ Freedom of the Seas ship in July 2019.Anello, 51, has repeatedly said he is colorblind and did not know the window in the children's play area was open when he lifted Chloe up so she could bang on the glass, WRTV reports.Chloe's parents filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Royal Caribbean Cruises in December 2019, claiming the company violated industry standards by failing to provide reasonably safe windows in an area where children play on the ship.In response, Royal Caribbean filed court documents alleging that Anello was “unquestionably aware” that the window was open because video shows him leaning out of it right before he picked Chloe up and dangled her from it.The documents filed by Royal Caribbean claim Anello's actions were captured on two separate video surveillance cameras, which were previously unreleased. SAN YSIDRO (KGTV) -- Local businesses are feeling a one-two punch after the border closure for non-essential travel was extended during the coronavirus pandemic.The owner of El Rincon Restaurant in San Ysidro said the extension is devastating for business."I just found out a couple hours ago that they were going to do this, I had absolutely no clue," Owner Edgar Alaniz said. He was looking forward to the reopening of the border planned for June 22, now pushed back for a third time to July 21.Alaniz said he didn't want to be mad because all of this is to protect our health and safety but it's extremely difficult for businesses to survive after being closed for three months. Alaniz said about 75-80% of their customers come from Mexico. Currently, the business is only seeing about 20% of those customers. "That's what happens when the border is closed for three months, people find different ways and for a restaurant like me, they find a different restaurant," he said.He hopes when the border reopens to welcome them back.Alaniz said they closed the restaurant March 15, and continued with take-out service. Just last week they reopened for dine-in service with protective procedures, like masks and extra cleaning, in place.Alaniz hopes to see more of his neighbors reopening as well, saying he only knows of one other locally owned restaurant in San Ysidro reopening so far.He is confident we will all get through this, "we move forward with strength and a bright vision, that's what it is and that's what it will always be about."The news comes as the U.S., Canada, and Mexico agreed to extend their agreement to keep their borders closed to non-essential travel through July 21 during the coronavirus pandemic."This is an important decision that will keep people in both of our countries safe,” Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Tuesday. 1870
