WILSON, N.C. – The father of a 5-year-old boy who was fatally shot outside his North Carolina home says he cannot understand why someone would want to harm his son.Austin Hinnant told WRAL that his son, Cannon, was playing on his bike in the yard of their Wilson home when he heard a gunshot while inside.Hinnant says he ran outside and found Cannon suffering from a gunshot wound to his head. He scooped his son up in his arms and screamed for someone to help.The father claims he looked up and saw his neighbor, Darius Sessoms, in the yard next door, with a gun in his hand, pacing."I was looking at him as I was picking up Cannon,” Hinnant told WRAL. “I was so full of rage, but I couldn't leave my son's side. I wanted to be with my son."The boy was rushed to an area hospital, where he later died.A warrant was issued for Sessoms and police say he was taken into custody on Monday. The 25-year-old has been charged with 1st degree murder and is being held without bond.Sessoms doesn’t appear to be a stranger to the family. Hinnant says he had Sessoms over for dinner just the night before."I have no idea why he would kill my son in front of his two sisters and his cousin,” Hinnant told WRAL. “I have no idea."Law enforcement has not provided any details regarding a possible motive for Cannon’s murder.A funeral for the little boy was held Thursday. WNCN reports that hundreds gathered at the Shingleton Funeral Home in Wilson to pay their respects, including Cannon’s grandmother, Merrill Race.Race told WNCN that Cannon was “just a kid trying to have fun in his own yard and something like this happens. When talking about veteran mental health, much of the conversation is centered on post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injury (TBI). While both are widespread and debilitating, the mental health-related challenges veterans face go beyond these conditions.Dependable, courageous, and in peak physical shape, Theresa Larson chased perfection when joining the Marine Corps.“I wanted to be the exemplary Marine," said Larson. "To the T. What does a good Marine officer do? I had to do that.”A stellar student and Division 1 college athlete, she had been training for a challenge like this her entire life. With two older brothers in the military, Larson was well aware of the unique challenges she'd face as a female leader. “You have to be really fit and healthy. You have to be fitter than them. They're going to look at you physically and see how you perform," said Larson.Leader of a platoon, Larson was responsible for more than 50 Marines, working to earn their respect while training them for war. “You already fit in if you’re a male, if you’re a female, it's what is she going to do for me? Kind of attitude. And I was prepared for that," said Larson.But chasing perfection would come at a cost; her own well-being was no longer a priority. As the 12 to 15-hour days and mounting pressure felt out of her control, Larson latched onto what she could control. “The drug was food for me, so it ended up turning into the bulimia end of the first year," said Larson.With rigid fitness standards and weight requirements, the National Eating Disorders Association says service members are at especially high risk for eating disorders.“Abuse of fitness and nutrition tends to be the thing. It might not be full-blown bulimia or anorexia, or anything like that, but it can be a lot of disordered eating. Obviously, with yo-yo dieting, too much exercise or too little exercise can affect your focus," said Larson.Before deploying to Iraq, Larson sought help from a friend but didn’t disclose her illness to the military, fearing she’d lose her job.“I tried to make everyone realize I would be OK because I didn’t want to let the Marines down. You know, mission accomplishment and troop welfare are kind of the things we thrive on as Marines, especially Marine leaders," said Larson. No longer at a desk, leading operations and landmine missions, the responsibility to protect her platoon had never felt greater."It dawned on me, 'gosh, I’m really not OK. And this is not about me. It's about all the Marines I’m taking care of. So yeah, I’m sick, and I’m going to affect someone else.' It was a wake-up call," said Larson.Larson was sent home and said she had to fight to get treatment in the military. While grateful they covered 12 weeks of care in an outpatient rehabilitation clinic, Larson says she was on her own to continue getting help.“Anyone knows that has an addiction, it’s not just a, 'OK, you're done.' It's a continuous, daily decision and practice. And so, I ended up paying for my own care after that for a while," said Larson. "It was a couple of years until I stopped the symptoms of bulimia, and then was just dealing with what was left-- the depression, the anxiety, and managing that.”She says getting healthy became her job. And after the military, Larson helped others do the same. She wrote a memoir about her military experience and has since been contacted by countless service members and veterans struggling with similar challenges. “As a leader, there's a fine line of when you push yourself and when you need to ask for help. And asking for help, I’ve learned, is not a weakness. It’s a strength," said Larson.After earning a doctorate in physical therapy, Larson and her husband founded Movement Rx, a program helping people around the country uncover the root cause of their pain and injuries. “Just because someone is in a wheelchair, that’s not the only thing going on. Or if someone looks like they’re fine, it doesn’t mean they don’t have something going on," said Larson. In addition to free online resources for veterans, Movement Rx has free in-person training for veterans in San Diego. “We have our health care platform that veterans can use, offering mindfulness and meditation, nutrition support, fitness, as well as movement, working through injuries," said Larson. While there's more help now for struggling veterans and service members, Larson knows asking for it is still just as hard. “You asking for help, it's going to open more doors and more growth than you can ever imagine, but you have to take that vulnerable leap, and that's when life really happens." 4633
With COVID-19 cases surging across most of the country, teachers are weighing whether it’s safe for them to return to the classroom while at the same time, trying to make sure their students don’t slip through the cracks because of the virus.In a virtual town hall-style meeting, four educators from across the country gathered to share their thoughts, concerns and excitement about the upcoming school year. The overriding theme: parents and students will need to be flexible.“We’re going to ask you for grace for this entire year. We want to teach your children, but when we voice concerns it’s not because we’re lazy and we don’t want to work, it’s because we want to make sure our families are safe, too,” said Rachel Sandoval, an elementary school teacher in Colorado.Sandoval’s school was forced to close back in March because of COVID-19. She knows her students have lost out on valuable in-person learning time because of the virus, but she’s also worried that gathering students back in a classroom setting this coming fall could give the virus a perfect environment to spread in.“We can’t do the same thing we did last year. The world has changed. Everything has changed,” she said.Her concern was echoed by other teachers who joined the virtual town hall.Steph MacPhail teachers 5th grade in Minnesota. As a mom, she’s struggled to juggle a full-time teaching job, while at the same time, taking care of her two young boys.“I felt really burned out this spring from a teacher perspective and from a parent perspective,” she said.While McaPhail misses her students, she worries that COVID-19 cases will continue to surge if kids go back to school.“Kids and families want to go back to normal, but this is going to be anything but normal, and that’s scary,” she said.Across the country, many school districts are choosing to start the year virtually, which brings another set of challenges. Some kids don’t have adequate internet access or access to a computer that they can use to access online classes.“We need to make sure kids are still staying engaged while at the same time dealing with these environmental factors. For a lot of students in poverty-stricken areas, having the one interaction at school is so critically important,” said Dr. Kenyae Reese, who serves as a principal in Nashville, Tennessee.Dr. Reese’s district is one of those starting the school year entirely online. She’s asked her teachers to be flexible. In some instances, she says she’s talked to students who might be embarrassed to turn on their camera during a Zoom call because of the home they live in. Other students in her high school are taking care of younger siblings, all while trying to keep up with classwork.“We’re changing the landscape of a whole generation, what they know about school and how they interact with people,” Dr. Reese said.With all the uncertainty, though, every teacher still expressed joy and excitement about whatever the upcoming school year brings, including Phillip Starostka, who teaches elementary school in Arizona.“We are working as hard as possible and will do everything we can to make it seamless,” he said. 3145
When COVID-19 forced businesses to reduce capacity, restaurants had to get creative. Many opened up outdoor space to dine.Now, with winter coming, restaurants are scrambling to figure out how to keep outdoor spaces comfortable.“We won a James Beard award here. I think what we’re known for is amazing food and service and great wine,” said Chef Jennifer Jasinski, owner of Crafted Concepts Restaurant Group. Rioja is one of the restaurants.“We’re just trying to plan. Hope for the best, plan for the worst,” Jasinski said.Like many restaurants across the U.S., Rioja is struggling with bringing business back and following physical distancing guidelines.“The order that let us increase our patio at each of our restaurants was a really big help over the summer. It got us to about 65 to 70% of our prior year occupancy,” Jasinski said.Outdoor space has been the saving grace for many.The National Restaurant Association Research Group conducted a survey of more than 3,500 restaurant operators from August 26 to September 1 nationwide.“Places that have table service, approximately three fourths are currently utilizing outdoor space which is a very large percentage,” said Mike Whatley, vice president of state and local affairs for the National Restaurant Association. “And it's making up an average of 44% of daily sales, which is very high by historical standards. Almost half of their money currently is coming from outdoor dining.” But outdoor space may present some challenges in the coming months.“Equipment for outdoor dining, especially when it gets cold, it gets expensive,” Whatley said. “What we found is that the average restaurateur is hoping to utilize their outdoor space two months more from this point moving forward.”“It’s absolutely terrifying. I feel like it’s 'Game of Thrones' and winter is coming and I’m scared. It’s not white walkers, I’m just scared of the occupancy,” Jasinski said. And she’s not alone.Many restaurants across the country are facing the same battle, and searching for solutions. The City of Chicago is reaching out to help by hosting a Winter Design Challenge, inviting the community to reimagine the winter outdoor dining experience for a prize.It’s similar to how Larimer Square in Denver, Colorado, where Rioja is located, was re-imagined, by letting the community have a say.“It wasn't just about the seating capacity, it was about the experience itself of being on the street and I mean really, it’s worked,” Jon Buerge said. Buerge is the Chief Development Officer at Urban Villages, the property management company in charge of Larimer Square, a prime example of the “Street-ery” concept.“This 'street-ery' concept is a new one where you block off a street in an urban area, and allow restaurants to take over some of that space. We’re seeing that in a number of jurisdictions,” Whatley said.“Some of the things that we've been exploring are tent systems that could be heated and, on a nice day, you can roll up the walls,” Buerge said. He said solutions really depend on the place.“Seattle has been slower to reopen. The people in Seattle have been less willing to go out and restaurants have been closed for longer. So it depends on the market, it depends on the weather, it depends on whether the people in these cities are ready to come out,” he said.As temperatures drop, restaurants are weighing the benefits and costs of seating diners outdoors.“There's all these hoops we have to jump through for less dollars,” Jasinski said. “I haven't heard of anybody else having any brilliant ideas that don't cost a ton of money.” 3588
