JEFFERSON COUNTY, Miss. – Three men have been arrested in connection with the murder of an off-duty officer state trooper.Mississippi Highway Patrol says 58-year-old Troy Morris was found fatally shot in a vehicle on US 61 in Jefferson County early Friday morning. There were reportedly no signs of theft from the vehicle.Morris was a 27-year veteran and a lieutenant with MHP.Along with being trooper, Morris also worked as a highway contract driver with Blackwell Hauling Inc, which has a contract with the U.S. Postal Service to transport mail between USPS facilities. Officials say he was found in the commercial truck that he used to transport mail.“This is a sad day for law enforcement, the Mississippi Highway Patrol, and the State of Mississippi. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Lieutenant Troy Morris. Local, state, and federal agents will work tirelessly to ensure justice,” said Commissioner Sean Tindell.Saturday, MHP announced that Treyon Washington, 24, was taken into custody in Jefferson County and has been charged with Morris’ murder. He’s being held in the Jefferson County Detention Facility with no bond.Meanwhile, Cdarrius Norman, 17, and Damion Whittley, 25, were arrested in New Orleans. Judge Stephen Reinhardt, a liberal federal appeals court judge who was part of a panel that rejected California's Proposition 8 same-sex marriage ban as unconstitutional, died Thursday, according to a court spokesperson. He was 87.Reinhardt, who served on the US 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, died of a heart attack during a visit to his dermatologist, according to spokesman David Madden.One of the last remaining federal judges appointed by then-President Jimmy Carter, nearly four decades ago, Reinhardt emerged as a staunch critic of the Trump administration's deportation policies and travel ban in the final years of his life."We have lost a wonderful colleague and friend. As a judge, he was deeply principled, fiercely passionate about the law and fearless in his decisions," Chief Judge Sidney R. Thomas of the 9th Circuit said in a statement."He will be remembered as one of the giants of the federal bench. He had a great life that ended much too soon," Thomas said.Trump has slammed the court as being liberal and a symbol of "a broken and unfair" court system.Reinhardt's passing leaves a progressive vacancy on the court for Trump to potentially fill with a conservative vote.Reinhardt was born in New York in 1931. La Jolla residents are beyond frustrated after yet another truck got stuck on one of its busiest streets, a problem they thought the city fixed last week.The latest incident happened Saturday, when a delivery truck got trapped trying to turn up steep Hillside Drive from busy Torrey Pines Road. The truck jutted out into Torrey Pines Road, blocking one lane. "I am completely flabbergasted," La Jolla resident Diane Kane said. "Clearly whatever they did, it was not effective."The city recently installed a cross gutter at the base of Hillside Drive, which residents say made the problem worse. On May 6, it took a second, more powerful tow truck to free a truck that had been lodged at the intersection for hours. Residents complained to the city, which dispatched crews to smooth out the asphalt on Torrey Pines Road to make it more flush with the cross-gutter. However, that only helped make it easier for cars and light trucks to get up and down without bottoming out. A city spokesman said warning signs telling large trucks to avoid the intersection would remain. “City staff are in the process of assessing the intersection to see what additional remedies, if any, can be implemented to help with this problem," city spokesman Alec Phillipp said. "We continue to direct commercial trucks to abide by the signage in the area stating that trucks shall not be using this intersection.”Kane said residents want the city to improve its signage and alert directional apps to instruct trucks to avoid the area. 1519
