SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego teenager has written a book about her choice to quit social media, and how it's made her happier and healthier."It's something I'm passionate about," says 16-year old Alexa Mendes, who wrote #Unsubscribed over the last summer. "My rules are don't post, don't comment and don't like anything."She's also removed all social media apps from her phone.Mendes says she started using social media as a fifth-grader and would check apps like Instagram, Snapchat and Pinterest regularly."I was always on it," she says. "You're always thinking about it if you're not on it. When you're on it, you scroll through your entire feed and then go back to the top and make sure there's nothing refreshed. You keep looking through it to see if anyone else has posted more."She says the addiction consumed her life."When you're with other people, you're thinking about how you're going to get the next photo opportunity, where you're going to stand, how you're going to pose, when you should post, how much you should post, if it's too much. And there's a whole stream of consciousness that goes through your head," says Mendes.In middle school, she started to cut back. First, a few days at a time, then weeks. Eventually, she quit.Now, she uses social media to keep track of school projects and homework, but nothing else.Her book details her journey and experience with social media. It also includes comments from her friends as they chime in about the way social media has affected their lives. It also has some tips on ways that anyone, teen or adult, can cut back."You have to notice that it's a problem. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A small stretch of Old Town's main road will be closed to cars from Thursdays through Sundays for the rest of 2020 to help area restaurants serve outdoors safely.The move is meant to help the region survive as it enters the purple tier of coronavirus restrictions, which outlaws indoor dining.San Diego Avenue, from Arista to Linwood, will no longer be available to vehicle traffic in the afternoons and evenings on Thursdays through Sundays until Dec. 27. While most of Old Town has been able to offer outdoor dining with adequate social distancing, the restaurants on the southernmost portion of the historic park have not had as much space to work with.Pietro Busalacchi, who opened Trattoria Don Pietro in August, said cars sometimes speed down the street, near outdoor diners. Additionally, the sidewalk near the tables is narrow and large groups without masks walk too close to diners. It turns him from restaurateur to security officer. "Once they've walked halfway through the restaurant if they're not wearing a mask I'm like, 'hey you know, can you throw a mask on?' It's too late at that point and also some people look at you like, 'don't tell me what to do,'" Busalacchi said. The Old Town Chamber of Commerce arranged with the city for the closure, which it experimented with earlier this year. After two months back to normal, it decided the closure was the right way to go. "The pandemic really changed a lot for our businesses, so we had to give each request a shot and we decided to close the street again," said Sunny Lee, the chamber's executive director.Lee said if the coronavirus restrictions persist into 2021, Old Town would seek to extend its closure with the city. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A Texas company has been awarded a contract to erect nearly 30 miles of fencing along California's border with Mexico.U.S. Customs and Border Protection awarded 7 million in construction contracts to Texas-based construction company SLSCO. The contracts include up to 14 miles of secondary wall and up to 15 miles of primary pedestrian replacement wall in California within the San Diego, Yuma, and El Centro Sectors.The 15-mile primary pedestrian replacement wall will include the installation of a new, 30-foot steel bollard wall: About 11 miles in Calexico, three miles in Tecate, and one mile in Andrade. According to CBP, these areas represent areas where wall replacement has been a priority. Construction for that 6 million project is slated to begin in July 2019.The secondary wall project is a 1 million contract and will include up to 14 miles of the same 30-foot steel bollard wall adjacent to San Diego's primary fence replacement project that is currently under construction. Construction of that project is projected to begin February 2019.SLSCO has already worked on border construction earlier this year, constructing new steel fencing in Border Field State Park.The two projects are a part of President Trump's "Border Security and Immigration Enforcement Improvements" executive order, which calls for a contiguous wall to be built along the southern U.S. border with Mexico, according to CBP. 1447

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Tesla owner got a road-rage surprise after a quick shopping trip at a Best Buy store in Carmel Mountain Ranch.Cory Janney bought his 2018 Model 3 in December. On Saturday, just past 1 p.m., he and his wife drove through the entrance of The Courtyard shopping center."As we were coming in, a car drove straight through a stop sign. I honked my horn for a millisecond," said Janney.The gray BMW drove off while Janney and his wife parked and went into Best Buy. After about six minutes, they came back to the car."We were both pretty shocked," said Janney.Along the front door on the passenger side was a deep scratch. A look at their dashcam video revealed the culprit. Soon after they parked and went inside, a gray BMW pulls into the parking spot next to their Tesla. A man with a green shirt gets out and looks around. In his hand is something sharp, like a key."He had stiff arm and proceeded to scratch the passenger side of the door, before getting back into the vehicle," said Janney.The "scratch" deep went all the way through, past the clear coat and the paint. Janney hasn't got an estimate yet, but one expert told 10news it could run upwards of several thousand dollars."It's disturbing something so small could lead to so much rage. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A woman's trip to Mission Bay ended with her, and her car, soaked.The woman, who identified herself as Candy, said she was next to her car on a boat ramp preparing to unload her kayak for a day of fishing and roaming around Mission Bay. Suddenly, her 2002 Audi convertible started rolling as she was unloading gear.Candy jumped into the car and road it into the bay as she tried to get her emergency brake to engage."It just wouldn't. It just kept on going," Candy told 10News. "I was standing straight up in it as it was going down ... quite a scene, I'm sure."The car started sinking into the bay with Candy still inside, before she jumped out to swim back to shore. Her lunch and kayak floated to the other side of the bay as her car became completely submerged, she told 10News."I'm going to have plenty of fish now," she joked. "It's not a big deal, things happen."Two tow trucks were able to fish Candy's vehicle out of the bay and San Diego Lifeguards retrieved her car and kayak, in which she had left her purse and lunch.Candy said she had just purchased the car in November.San Diego Lifeguards reminded locals to exercise caution while using boat ramps. 1216
