The percentage of 18-to-29-year-olds who live with one or both of their parents is at record high levels during the pandemic, according to Pew Research Center. Online review company Yelp wants to help some of them move out with their “re-empty the nest” contest.Reasons for moving back home range from college closures, unemployment, saving money on rent, and other stresses brought on by the coronavirus pandemic. As the pandemic has stretched on for several months, some may be itching for some space of their own, and some parents might be wishing for an empty house again.Yelp is offering to pay ,000 to help cover moving costs of select recipients. Participants can enter for their chance to win by telling Yelp why they are ready to leave the nest. The company says they are seeing search requests for movers, packing services and mortgage lenders increase. Searches for “movers” increased 34 percent in San Francisco, 22 percent in New York and 6 percent in Los Angeles over this summer compared to summer 2019. 1026

The pandemic has resulted in a major increase in donated items, so the selection at stores like Goodwill is better than ever before.Families that are trying to make ends meet are benefiting a lot from this surge in donations."It’s not just a little bit. It’s carloads of donations," said Goodwill store manager Sarah Guthrie. "It’s just been crazy. Donation after donation. The first weekend I was here, we did over 1,000 donations between Saturday and Sunday. It's about a car for every 12 seconds."Guthrie has been store manager at the Castle Rock, Colorado, Goodwill location for about a month and a half. She's seen the same thing just about every day since."Right now, our donation center starts at 10 a.m., but starting around 9:15 or so, we start getting cars in our line and a lot of times it’ll wrap all the way around the building and into the street," said Guthrie. They see car after car of people dropping off bags of things they no longer need."Spring cleaning has taken on a whole new meaning this year," said Goodwill Industries International CEO Steve Preston. He says this isn’t just unique to this one store. Donations are up across the country where stores are open, which means now is the time to go shopping for a bargain."That is the logical connection. So, when we get a lot of great donations coming in, it is a super time to hit the store because our category is called “Treasure Hunting”, category in retail, and there are just a ton of treasures in there because so many people have been bringing in those donations," said Preston. Some stores are seeing an increase of up to 50% in donations, and they’re having a hard time storing it in their stores."Many of our local stores are renting additional warehouse space. They’re finding trucks to be able to hold those donations," said Preston.Which is the case back at Guthrie’s store."We store what we can here in the store. We process what we can here in the store. But, a lot of what we get in through our donation line actually goes to our warehouses," said Guthrie.More donations mean selling more goods, which turns into more job training for people who are now finding themselves unemployed. 2179

The organization that runs the Bronx Zoo in New York has apologized for the racist history in the zoo's past.In a news release, the Wildlife Conservation Society apologized for two incidents of "unconscionable racial intolerance" that occurred in the past. The first incident the zoo is "condemning" is the treatment Ota Benga, a young central African man from the Mbuti people of the present-day Democratic Republic of Congo, experienced. For several days in September 1906, the zoo put Benga on display in its Monkey House. Outrage from local Black ministers "brought the disgraceful incident to an end.""In the name of equality, transparency, and accountability, we must confront our organization’s historic role in promoting racial injustice as we advance our mission to save wildlife and wild places," officials said. After leaving the zoo, officials say Benga stayed at an orphanage in Brooklyn. He died by suicide a decade later, the organization said. The second incident officials condemned was the "eugenics-based, pseudoscientific racism, writings, and philosophies" by founders Madison Grant and Henry Fairfield Osborn Sr.Zoo officials said an excerpt from Grant’s book “The Passing of the Great Race” was included in a defense exhibit for one of the defendants in the Nuremberg trials."We deeply regret that many people and generations have been hurt by these actions or by our failure previously to publicly condemn and denounce them," officials said in the statement. "We recognize that overt and systemic racism persists, and our institution must play a greater role to confront it. As the United States addresses its legacy of anti-Black racism and the brutal killings that have led to mass protests around the world, we reaffirm our commitment to ensuring that social, racial, and environmental justice are deep-rooted in our conservation mission." 1871

The photo is shocking. A young mother passed out in the front seat of her car, a syringe clutched in her fist. What you can't see in the photo is the back seat, where her infant son sat crying. That was a year ago this month -- but for Erika Hurt, it might as well be a lifetime. The 26-year-old Indiana woman says she has been clean since that day, doting on her son and working a full-time job.And the photo, which at first was a source of anger and humiliation, illustrates the slippery line between sobriety and despair."I was sober. I stopped going to meetings. I forgot about how bad the addiction got," Hunt told CNN about that period in her life last year. "This photo helped me look back. It's a constant reminder that sobriety needs to be worked at."The day the photo was shotThe day the photograph was taken, Hurt had parked in the lot of a dollar store in Hope, Indiana, to shoot up heroin. She had gotten out of a month-long stint in rehab just two weeks earlier. Her 10-month-old son was in the back seat. She rationalized his presence the same way a lot of addicts do while using in front their kids, she said: They're asleep. Or they're too young to realize what's going on.The last thing Hurt remembers from that day is pulling into the parking lot. She later learned a customer found her slumped over in the car and called 911.It took officers two doses of Narcan, the drug used to reverse an overdose in an emergency situation, to revive her."Had this woman not passed out from this and attempted to drive right afterward, she could have (driven) down the road, passed out two minutes later and hit a car with a family in it, killed every one of them," Hope Town Marshal Matthew Tallent told CNN at the time. "That's the thing that's so shocking to me to think about."What happened nextAfter a brief hospital stay came jail. Hunt had violated her probation from a previous charge in 2014.While she was waiting for her sentencing date, a local reporter requested an interview. Then another asked, and another. She didn't think much of it at the time. She found out why when she was watching the evening news.A police officer had snapped a photo of her passed out in the car. It soon went viral."I felt very humiliated, I felt very angry," she said. "You know, it was hard for me to truly believe that it was me."Hurt's story fits into a grim pattern, as research shows heroin use is on the rise in the US. The most recent United Nations' World Drug Report found that 914,000 people aged 12 years or older reported using heroin in 2014 -- a 145% increase since 2007.Where she is nowHunt has been fighting addiction all her life, she says."I had been an addict since I was 15 years old," she said. "It wasn't until I was 21 that I began seeking help -- and I was failing at it. "The overdose, captured in the photo, led to Hunt getting clean. She was sentenced to six months of intense rehab in a locked-down facility -- one that focused on the underlying issues of addiction and how to cope with them. She's part of WRAP (Women Recovering with a Purpose), a program that requires continued meetings with a therapist, a sobriety coach and multiple "self care" classes such as Narcotics Anonymous every week. Now, she works more than 40 hours a week at a local factory. She also cares for her son, but her mom has guardianship. At this point, her focus is on staying the course."If you are sober and healthy," she said, "then you can take care of everybody else." 3477
