(KGTV) -- Local businesses struggle to survive as the pandemic drags on, and more restrictions are expected across San Diego county.Farideh Sandahl opened Blusandz boutique on Cedros Avenue in Solana Beach in 2017. Last week, she shut her doors for good."Heartbreaking, frustrating, it felt like a relief, as well," said Sandahl.Sandahl said they made it through the initial shut down in March, but when COVID-19 cases surged in the summer, they couldn't recoup their losses."After the fourth of July, things just dropped. It was like a ghost-town," said Sandahl. The Design District on Cedros Avenue is home to dozens of unique shops, restaurants, and coffee shops. Before the pandemic hit, the business owners were holding monthly outdoor strolls with live music."Leaping Lotus and The Belly Up, they were our lifeline. They were like the places to go," said Sandahl. The Belly Up is currently holding shows online, and Lotus, formerly known as Leaping Lotus, closed in June."With COVID, it really killed that area," said Sandahl.A few doors down, Caravan West and Curve Couture are advertising going out of business sales.Sandahl says she'll continue working in the fashion industry."When I see people wear the clothes outside of my boutique, I was like oh, I sold that to them!"She'll still sell her clothes on her website blusandz.com [blusandz.com]"I learned, I learned what not to do, I learned what to do, and I've learned to continue with your head up and your tunnel vision on your goal," said Sandahl. 1518

(WXYZ) — Nearly 100,000 children tested positive for COVID-19 in the last two weeks of July, according to a new report from the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Children’s Hospital Association.According to the report, 97,078 kids tested positive for coronavirus between July 16 and July 30, which is nearly 1/3 of the total confirmed cases of children in the U.S. since the beginning of the pandemic. The report found that around 338,000 children tested positive for coronavirus since the pandemic began. Over the last two weeks of July, the number of positive tests increased 40%.According to the report, the academy looked at state numbers that were considered children. The age ranges vary by state, and in Michigan, it includes anyone 19 and younger, but the state recently started reporting age groups 0-9 and 10-19. In Alabama, the report found child cases included anyone 24 and younger. It comes as school districts in many states, including Michigan, are determining whether or not to resume in-person classes. The states with the largest increase include Alaska, Idaho, Missouri, Montana and Oklahoma.View a global coronavirus tracker with data from Johns Hopkins University. This story originally reported by Max White on wxyz.com. 1253

(KGTV) -- With both finalists in the race to become San Diego's next mayor being Democrats, a surprise, late endorsement by the Republican who nearly cracked the top two in the primary could help tip the balance in what appears to be a close election.Over the weekend, City Councilmember Scott Sherman endorsed Assemblymember Todd Gloria over fellow Councilmember Barbara Bry. In a Twitter thread, Sherman stated "After much thought, I can’t in good conscience vote for Barbara Bry. She is inauthentic, inconsistent, and untrustworthy."Sherman went on to say that he had disagreements with Gloria on the issues, but praised him for consistency and authenticity. In an interview with ABC 10News, Gloria said he was grateful for Sherman's endorsement. "Clearly we’re from different political parties and we disagree on many, many issues. But at the end of the day, he’s casting his vote based on character. And what he shared is really meaningful to me.”Bry told ABC 10News she believes Sherman endorsed her opponent because she had defeated him in the primary, as well as in issues two faced together on the council. She also suggested gender played a role. “I made it into the final two, so for the first time in San Diego history there are two democrats in the final two and this probably bruised his male ego a little bit.”According to the most recent ABC 10News/Union-Tribune scientific poll, conducted during the first week of October, the race is a dead heat. 1472

A 33-year-old woman was arrested Tuesday after North Las Vegas police said she carried a pickax onto a school campus and threatened children while they were at lunch.Police said just before noon, a resident near Tom Williams Elementary School called police regarding a woman who was carrying a pickax as she was climbing over the school's chain link fence. Two-hundred-fifty children were outside at the time.According to police, the woman, identified as Kisstal Killough, was acting erratic and screaming that she was going to kill everyone.Police arrived within one minute. She put down on the ax and dropped to the ground before orders were given by police.Killough was arrested on charges of assault, trespass, nuisance and loitering on a school property. The principal of Tom Williams Elementary sent a letter out to parents. The safety of our students is the number one priority at Tom Williams Elementary School. As always, we want to keep you informed of important issues happening within our school community. We want to let you know that earlier today, an adult, not associated with our school, attempted to climb a fence to trespass on our campus. Staff and students noticed the woman and law enforcement was called.Officers from the North Las Vegas Police Department responded immediately and took the woman into custody before she could access the playground area. The woman did not harm anyone or cause any damage to the school.I would like to thank the North Las Vegas Police Department for their amazing response time to our call, and I would also like to thank our staff and students for being alert and taking the appropriate actions. This incident serves as an important opportunity to remind our parents and students of safe practices and to look out for each other. If you or your child notices something suspicious or a person on campus who does not have a CCSD ID, please notify one of our staff members immediately. 1965

A Bay County, Mich. man was bitten by a pet cobra and given 28 vials of antivenom from Florida's Miami-Dade County.According to the Detroit Medical Center, the 26-year-old Pinconning Township man was bitten on July 14 by an Albino Monocled Cobra he was keeping as a pet.He was taken to the hospital after becoming nauseated, vomiting and drowsy. He then suffered respiratory paralysis and stopped breathing from the venom, where he was taken to the Detroit Medical Center where he was given the antivenom.Toxicology at the DMC first contacted the Toledo Zoo and eight vials of general antivenom were sent to the DMC and administered to the patient within a half hour of arrival. The antivenom covers some but not all poisonous snakes, and it had little effect on the patient as he continued to worsen. After, toxicology contacted the Miami-Dade Emergency Response Team which dispatched 20 vials of antivenom and administered to the patient. The monocled cobra is native to the Asian countries of India, China, Vietnam, and Cambodia, as well as Malaysia, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar, Laos, Nepal, and Thailand. Its venom is highly potent and among the fasting acting of all snakes', with death arriving as soon as an hour after a bite, according to Reptiles Magazine. 1272
