SAN DIEGO (CNS) - State regulators have approved .1 million in funding for a slew of hydrogen refueling stations, including four in San Diego County, officials said Saturday.The funding, for a total of 123 stations statewide, will "expand California's early commercial light duty hydrogen refueling and fuel cell electric vehicle markets and (will) accommodate the projected FCEV roll-out in 2021-2024," according to the California Energy Commission.Funds were awarded to three companies -- FirstElement, Iwatani and Shell -- for 36 hydrogen stations to service passenger vehicles. Another 87 stations were also recommended for funding to these same awardees in subsequent funding batches.The funding awarded Friday includes stations at the following locations:1832 W. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County arson investigators were called to the scene of a commercial structure fire today in Spring Valley, authorities said.The fire began at 8:02 a.m. at a structure in the 300 block of Elkelton Place, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department reported.The fire was put out by San Miguel Fire District firefighters shortly afterward. The fire was isolated to the commercial structure, sheriff's officials said.No injuries were reported. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The City of San Diego began a virtual open house Monday to solicit public input for two potential uses for a vacant lot in the Encanto community.The city is asking the public to consider two redevelopment proposals for the Valencia Business Park located at Stevens Way and Imperial Avenue.Located in the federally designated San Diego Promise Zone, the Valencia Business Park has been vacant for more than 20 years. According to the city, the community-focused redevelopment is moving forward and expected to create at least 72 full-time jobs."For years, the vision for Southeastern San Diego has included activating the Imperial Avenue Corridor and development of the Valencia Business Park property," said Councilwoman Monica Montgomery Steppe. "We are energized to take another crucial step in this process and get vital input from our community on this redevelopment, as we see this vision come to fruition."The first proposal is a campus for the San Diego American Indian Health Center, described as a "wellness-centered community hub" that would account for 150 healthcare jobs, including 75 new ones.The other proposal is the San Diego Energy Equity Campus, a community hub site which proposes to provide educational resources to the underserved Southeast San Diego community.The public can view the proposals and provide feedback by visiting ValenciaBusinessParkInput.org. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher joined local Black leaders Friday to announce a three-pronged "Racial Justice and Law Enforcement Realignment Policy Package" which the Board of Supervisors will consider Tuesday.The three policies in the package involve strengthening the Citizen's Law Enforcement Review Board's authority and independence, opening an Office of Equity and Racial Justice for San Diego County and launching Mobile Crisis Response Teams that uses clinicians instead of law enforcement for mental health and homeless services.Paving Great Futures, ACLU of San Diego and Imperial Counties, Urban League of San Diego County, the Racial Justice Coalition of San Diego, BAPAC, SD for Justice Coalition, Pillars of the Community, the Black Chamber and Voice of Youth all offered input on the package, which seeks to "create more transparency and start to change the systemic and structural racism that has caused pain and harm to generations of Black people," according to a statement from Fletcher's office."The organizations and activists we worked with have been fighting to save Black lives, and advocating for these changes for a long time. Now is the time for real change," Fletcher said. "These proposals are initial steps in a series of system and culture changes that needs to occur for there to be true equity in treatment by law enforcement and other injustices felt by minority populations in our community."Fletcher launched a petition drive to support the policy package, and was joined at a news conference on the steps of the County Administration Center by Buki Domingos, founder of Racial Justice Coalition of San Diego; Ellen Nash, chair of the board of Black American Political Association of California; Khalid Alexander, president and founder of Pillars of the Community; and Maresa Talbert, co-chair of San Diegans for Justice.Community leaders offered words of encouragement for the policies."The Urban League of San Diego County Supports these reforms brought forward by Supervisor Nathan Fletcher to bring much needed racial justice reform and law enforcement oversight to the people of San Diego," said Al Abdallah, chief operating officer, Urban League of San Diego County.Fletcher's office outlined some of the direct policies the package would take if passed as designed.To strengthen the Citizen's Law Enforcement Review Board, the package said independence from the County Sheriff would be needed, as well as independent authority to investigate use-of-weapons and use-of-force claims.For the Office of Equity and Racial Justice, Fletcher said the county would have to involve communities of color to set policy and budget priorities, secure and administer restorative justice programs and "dismantle systemic barriers that present obstacles based on race."Last, for the Mobile Crisis Response Teams, the county would need to set up a help line, launch an outreach campaign and dedicate million annually of the county's Health and Human Services Agency budget toward the teams.The County Board of Supervisors will consider the policy proposals at its regular meeting at 9 a.m. Tuesday. 3167

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Police sought public help Tuesday to identify a pair of suspects who robbed two San Diego State University Students at gunpoint just blocks from campus.The students were walking about 1:35 a.m. Monday at Campanile Drive and Dorothy Drive when two men approached and demanded their belongings, according to the SDSU Police Department. One of the suspects was armed with a handgun.The victims complied with the demands and were not injured, according to police, who said the suspects fled in a white, four-door car heading north on Campanile Drive toward Montezuma Road.Both suspects were described as roughly 170-pound black men, one about 5- foot-7 and the other about 5-foot-10. They both wore dark hooded sweatshirts, saggy pants and sneakers.The San Diego Police Department is investigating the robbery, but university police released information as part of a community safety notification.Anyone with information about the crime was asked to call the SDPD at (619) 531-2000.
