SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego business legend Frank Fornaca died Wednesday at the age of 94.Fornaca's father started a family bakery in San Diego in 1912. More than 50 years later, the Fornacas went into the car business.The family still runs Frank Toyota, Subaru, and Hyundai. The dealerships are known for their catchy phrase, "Is that you, Frank?"Fornaca suffered from congestive heart failure. He was still able to attend his granddaughter's wedding just over a week ago.  493

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Lifeguards responded to two reported shark sightings off Scripps Beach Friday morning.San Diego Fire-Rescue Department officials said the first report came from a surfer at the beach -- located between La Jolla Shores and Ellen Browning Scripps Memorial Pier -- at around 10:30 a.m. As of 4 p.m., there were no additional sightings and the advisory for beachgoers had been lifted from La Jolla Shores beach.The surfer told lifeguards she was about 100 yards from the beach and within the surf line when she saw a six-foot shark “that was not acting aggressively and was heading north,” according to SDFD officials.Lifeguards patrolled the area where the share was seen but did not locate it.SDFD officials also said another surfer told lifeguards of a shark in the area that was also about six feet in length.Lifeguards at the beach are informing beachgoers of the sightings and posted warning signs on the beach.SDFD officials said no city beaches were closed.The sightings come one day after at least three sharks were seen in the waters off Torrey Pines State Beach. 1107

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diegans should get their flu shots before the flu season typically starts, county health officials said Wednesday.Most flu cases are reported between the end of October and April or May, according to the County Health and Human Services Agency.It takes about two weeks after receiving the flu shot to develop immunity to the virus, said officials.“People should get vaccinated before the worst of the flu season gets here,” said Wilma Wooten, M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer. “The vaccine is safe and effective and is available across the region.”342 people in San Diego County died of the virus during the last flu season, officials said. Most of the deaths were among those over 65, with underlying medical conditions. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police confirmed Monday the arrest of a Yuma, Arizona police officer on suspicion of rape.Yuma Police officer Jared Elkins, 33, was taken into custody Friday morning on Marlborough Dr. near Adams Ave. in Kensington.San Diego Police said Elkins was off duty at this time of his arrest. He is a 7-year veteran of the force, the Associated Press reported.  Yuma Police are working to place Elkins on administrative leave.Elkins will be charged with rape, oral copulation, threat to do bodily harm, sex asault with a foreign object, and misdemeanor sexual assault, police said.Elkins was released on 0,000 bail Saturday and ordered to appear in court on Sept. 25. 709

It also has a staggering number of veterans who don’t have a place to liveAnd, even more alarming is the number every year who take their own lives.As ABC 10News Anchor, Kimberly Hunt explains…a non-profit in San Diego lead by, and staffed by, veterans is looking to change that.There are an estimated 1,100 homeless vets on the streets of San Diego. Statistically they commit suicide at a rate of 1.5 times higher than the general population.Kyle Drake is president of Cammies and Canines Sanctuary… a veteran owned, faith bases non-profit helping veterans by providing, among other things transitional housing, structure, and therapy.On this sprawling ranch in Dulzura, they’re given an opportunity.But Cammies and Canines Sanctuary under the importance of companionship. It pairs each veteran with a rescue dog which has been schooled by their master trainers as a service animal.Kyle’s construction company builds tiny homes on the property for each vet to have a sense of place. Tony’s pest control company, Mosquito Joes trains interested veterans to work in the pest control industry, and everyone is given a sense of responsibility and respect.
