EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) - An El Cajon police officer's encounter with a group spray-painting graffiti ended in remarkable fashion early Wednesday morning.Sgt. Mike Murphy was on patrol around 2 a.m. when he got a radio call reporting people in dark clothing tagging along Heart Drive."Saw three males with dark clothing. Hit them with a spotlight and told them to have a seat, which they all did," said Sgt. Murphy. Two other patrol officers were called to the scene. The three men in their late 20s had spray paint under their nails, with fresh paint on the sidewalk and the wall of a business. Sgt. Murphy decided to take a closer look."I saw messages, not of hate, but of peace and love ... the peace sign and 'BLM.' Just had a discussion. 'You're not trying to say anything mean or hateful. Why did you choose a wall?' I understand the frustration of everything going on. Talked about, if this happened to their house, would they be upset? They apologized, and all agreed the avenue they chose was a wrong one. And they came up with, 'What if we fix this?' I said, 'I'd like to help you with that,'" said Sgt. Murphy.Sgt. Murphy, who says he had enough to make an arrest, decided to let them go and asked them meet at the same location that same evening, where he would help them clean up."Having them arrested, how is that going to help the message they're trying to put out? The vandalism would still be on the wall," said Murphy. At 7 p.m. Wednesday, the three men showed up with paint and rollers. Together with Sgt. Murphy, they painted over the graffiti."These men were true to their word. What better way to show not just how the department treats its citizens, but how the citizens treat our city. We all make mistakes, and sometimes we have to be given the opportunity to come back from a mistake," said Sgt. Murphy. The three men have decided to they will create a plywood art installation. Sgt. Murphy has promised to help them find a venue. 1961
EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) — The City of El Cajon has become a home away from home for many Chaldeans. They are a Catholic- Christian community who migrated to the U.S. from northern Iraq. El Cajon has the second largest number of Chaldean residents in the country."We as Chaldeans believe in the hope, and the resurrection, and the hope of what Jesus gives us," says Father Daniel Shaba. The church is the center of the Chaldean community in El Cajon. Hundreds of people gather at St. Peter Chaldean Catholic Cathedral for services each day.Complete Coverage: Life in El CajonMany Chaldean families left their home country of Iraq searching for a better life, after decades of war and violence against Christians and the church."We all share the same story of leaving and fleeing this persecution in Iraq," says Shaba. He says his family stayed in Greece before being cleared to come to the U.S. in 1994.According to the church, the first known Chaldean migrant came to San Diego in 1951. Within 30 years, the population grew to approximately 2,500. Today, nearly 40,000 Chaldean families have made El Cajon their home."The best part of El Cajon is the community," says doctor John Kasawa.Kasawa sees 15 to 20 patients a day, many of whom are Chaldean. Kasawa says he's one of few Chaldean doctors born in the U.S. He practices holistic and western medicine. Kasawa says his culture sparked his interest in becoming a doctor."They planted the seeds of how natural foods and drinking can have a very beneficial effect on longevity and really quality of life," Kasawa said.Detective Louie Michael, with the El Cajon Police Department, says he's grateful for his parents' bravery."At age 5, my dad was in the military, under that regime, and then we escaped from Iraq to turkey in a refugee camp and then came here at the end of '93," says Michael. He has been with El Cajon Police Department for more than ten years."I looked at the benefit of having a community that has nobody that they can speak to," says Michael. "For ten years, I was the only cop in the department that spoke Arabic and Aramaic."With Michael's help, the department now has five Chaldean officers on the force. He says it's the support of the church that has allowed the community to thrive. Many in the community say they will never call another city home."El Cajon is a unique place, its a very special place," says father Daniel Shaba. 2410

Do you prefer to select your numbers when playing the lottery? DETROIT, Michigan — At his annual State of the City address last year, Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan applauded his police department for continuing to drop the average response time for 911 calls inside the city."It's a far cry from the days when 911 calls averaged 30 minutes," Duggan said to applause. Now, according to police officials, officers arrive on the scene in about 12 minutes, sometimes sooner. But don't tell that to the mother of a young woman who called 911 again and again last month, only to have police show up days later."It failed for us," she said through tears. The mother asked that we conceal her face to protect the identity of her daughter, who she says is the victim of a crime. The trouble started on the afternoon of September 15. The mother, who we'll call Sandra, was visiting her young adult daughter on Detroit's west side when she heard screaming as she stepped out of her car."I run up to the door because I realized it was my daughter," she said. "She comes to the door and he's behind her, he's attacking her."Her daughter's boyfriend, who she said has been abusive in the past, was pounding her with his fists. Sandra ran up to the door and called 911. It was 1:29 PM."Detroit 911, what's the address of your emergency?" asked a dispatcher, according to recordings obtained by WXYZ television station."My daughter's boyfriend was beating the (expletive) out of her," she said breathlessly into the phone before providing her address. The dispatcher said she'd send a car that way, but 40 minutes went by and no one showed up.Sandra called again, but this time she received an automated message. She hung up and dialed 911 once more."Another automated message," she said.At 2:17 p.m., she made her fourth call, this time reaching a dispatcher."I already called it in 45 minutes ago and I still haven't had a police officer come yet," she told the woman on the other end of the line. Again she was told officers would be dispatched, and again she waited. No one came. Finally, at 3:01 p.m., she called once more. This time, she asked to speak to a supervisor."I already called it in twice now," she said, "It's been an hour and a half and nobody shows up."The dispatcher responded: "Hold on, let me see what's going on here," before transferring Sandra to a supervisor. No one from DPD, according to the family, showed up on Saturday.Around 5 p.m. that same day, Sandra said, her daughter's boyfriend returned."He had climbed back through her window and attacked her again," she said.Detroit police didn't arrive at the west side home until the following Wednesday afternoon, a full four days and 34 minutes after the first call to 911.Assistant Chief James White made no excuses when he spoke with WXYZ television station about the delay last week."It absolutely disturbs me, if that's actually what happened," White said, adding that the department is still investigating the incident.White said the investigation has "has already found some failures and there will be accountability for those failures."A police spokeswoman tells WXYZ that officers were, in fact, nearby on the Saturday Sandra called 911 and should have been directed to the home. Assistant Chief White says an internal investigation is still ongoing but said everyone deserved a prompt response from 911 in Detroit."She's already been contacted. She was issued an apology from the commander, and I will personally talk to her if she would like to talk to me," White said.An apology is something, says the young woman's mother, but it won't solve what she now says is her biggest fear: the next time her daughter needs 911, she won't bother to call."She's not feeling protected," Sandra said. "Not in the city of Detroit, that's for sure." 3776
