CORTEZ HILL (KGTV) - A woman's body was found in the courtyard of an apartment building in Cortez Hill, near Little Italy.Police were called around 3:30 p.m. to the Atmosphere apartment complex on 1453 Fourth Avenue.San Diego Police and San Diego Fire-Rescue personnel arrived a few minutes later. The 42-year-old woman had traumatic injuries to her body, and was pronounced deceased at the scene, police said.Police say the woman may have jumped from the 8th floor, but the homicide unit was called to the scene out of caution.Neighbors say they've seen police at the complex often, "most people say that this is just domestic violence dispute or something like that I’ve never actually seen anybody arrested, I have seen an ambulance here and people hauled away in the ambulance," neighbor Tom Hochrein said.He's lived in San Diego for 19 years and just moved to this neighborhood last year, "this area seems a little shaky here."Neighbors were concerned this time something severe happened, "someone must’ve said something about homicide or somebody you know jumped out the window or was pushed out I don’t know," Hochrein said.A woman who lives in the building said she feared for the safety of her family, especially her 18 month old son. She said the police knocked on her door and questioned her and her husband about whether they heard anything an hour prior.When she went downstairs, she found police tape across an elevator and parts of the floor where police were still investigating, "I'm scared, I have a family. I feel okay that the police are here but I really hope they find the suspect soon," she said.The sidewalk was closed for about 3 hours, while the investigation took place. CLEVELAND, Ohio — A 10-year-old boy has been arrested and charged in the fatal shooting of his stepmother in late September, Cleveland police announced on Friday.According to authorities, Shavonne Willis, 36, was shot multiple times in the 3200 block of East 121st Street. When police arrived, the woman's 10-year-old stepson was found at the scene with no injuries. He was originally considered a victim in the case, according to police. 461

COVID-19’s disproportionate impact on people living with diabetes is a growing concern.The American Diabetes Association says nearly 40% of COVID-19 deaths have been from those with the disease, while 90% of the hospitalizations have been people with diabetes or other underlying conditions.“Diabetes was a health crisis and epidemic in this country before the pandemic, and what the pandemic has done really is shine a very bright light on an old problem,” said Tracey Brown, CEO of the American Diabetes Association.Brown has lived with diabetes for 16 years. She's worried about additional financial struggles brought on by the pandemic.Even before COVID-19, one in four people were rationing their insulin to get by.Brown says the current unemployment rate is higher among people with diabetes. So, the burden has only worsened for those that have lost health coverage because of job loss.The disease also disproportionately impacts people of color living in low income areas.Brown says even now in 2020, every 5 minutes, someone in the U.S. loses a limb because of complications from diabetes.“There are so many comorbidities that go along with this, which is another reason why I talk about the fact that if we want to address the wellbeing of Americans, and improve the wellbeing of Americans, you can't have that conversation without having a conversation about improving diabetes,” said Brown.Brown wants to make sure people with diabetes don't feel like they're alone right now.There's a page of resources available on their website, Diabetes.org. CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) — An iconic Coronado bookstore says it is being forced out after 27 years at its home on Orange Avenue. Bay Books employees say landlord Kleege Enterprises has found a new tenant for the site and that it has to be out by March."I'm obsessed with this bookstore," said manager Barbara Chambers. "I don't know what I'm going to do."Building owner Bruce Kleege says this is not the case. He said he believes negotiations with the bookstore are ongoing and that he would like to keep the bookstore, albeit smaller. Last year, Kleege's company bought almost the entire block of buildings on Orange Avenue, the bookstore included, for million. Already, two high-end restaurants and a poke restaurant are on the way, replacing previous tenants. Kleege says the bookstore is paying a fraction of market rent, a gap that needs to narrow, but not close.Meanwhile, bookstore owner Angelica Muller says some of the spaces offered are off the main street, half the space, and double the rent to about ,000 a month.
